I would say the inaccessibility of 0.0 and low sec to inexperienced pilots (and even moderately experienced ones). 0.0 is ruled by large corps that want nothing to do with new players and lowsec is ruled by vicious pirates who kill anything they can find.
And 0.0 is where most of the ISK is generated which is total bull****. Why should people who have played the game for years be able to make the most money? You look at most games and its diminishing returns as you get more experienced (levels take longer, etc.). In EVE, the more you play, the higher your returns are. It means that veterans have more and more of a reason to keep playing while new players are chased away very quickly. It took two stalled attempts over 2 years before I finally played for more than two weeks because of that.

Show me a game where thats true please.
Sure isn't in Everquest. Only highest levels can handle camping the newest equipment which was the most valuable. Most stuff 1 expansion old is vendor trash or ends up on my skelly.
Not UO, where the higher skills would increase kill time dramatically. The difference between a 90 skill melee and a GM(100) skill was obscene. Now with the older players able to camp scrolls to hit 120 its even more pronounced.
Not SWG, where the best kill skills for pve often came with the master tag. The difference between a Max commando tree and anything else was rather damned significant. Same for Bounty hunter, Lightning shot2 4tw.
I MIGHT give ya Ragnarok Online, if you want that, where the ability to take good skills earlier in a characters life makes the most difference, but eh. *** Thats a Templar, the amarr fighter. Its a combat drone used by carriers. |

Real space faring would be pretty like that days/weeks of boredom and tedium which is broken by a short period of action and terror

Im in the same position as you. At least theres advanced learning skills and implants to address the problem. Imagine all the players with 40+ million skillpoints but stuck with a stupid name.

2. Losing in the hundreds of millions of isk from desync/lag.
3. Not being able to choose where 100% of your attributes go when starting a character.
4. Not being able to make a custom character that just gives you a "pool" of SP to spend on whatever skills you want when you start a new character.
5. Some of the skill choices CCP thought up when making a new character is absolutely pathetic. Caldari with Gunnery 5? Uh, yah.
That's to give you a headstart when you realise you have to reskill for Gallante!

Yesterday:
Lost my first battleship without a fight - at least for me. Enemy warps in, my screen freezes ... waiting ... waiting ... screen is back and I got podded and was sitting in my clone. Wish I have had the chance to react in some way.
So I say the lad issue is the harshes thing for me.

I'd say the harshest thing about Eve is the sheer difficulty in being reimbursed for significant flaws in the client and/or server software that causes you to lose ships.
Take for example, and I'm dealing with this right now, you pre-align a mining ship for warp so as to escape quickly in case rats come to your roid field. Sure enough, rats come and you click the "warp to" button in the overview, with the pre-aligned planet selected, but instead of warping instantly your ship spirals out of control and points toward empty space. This results in you losing 200 mil in ship/modules, as you try repeatedly to warp out (using different methods like right-click planet, overview, etc.) but the ship will not attempt to properly align, but instead point to a new random direction. This is all with no warp jams applied to your ship.
CCP has stated that cases like this are non-refundable. Not only that, but it falls on YOU, the customer, to gather logs and information and duplicate the situation on the test server, and then submit detailed bug reports. And even if by some stroke of luck you manage to trigger the same bug and prove it, CCP has stated that this will not increase chances of reimbursement, it will only prevent other players from running into the same bug (assuming it is fixed).
So that's the harshest thing about Eve IMO, the fact that we have to fix their software for them and get nothing for it, even though your loss was their fault in the first place.

P.S. If anyone knows the correct forum where I can get dev/mod attention with this and good public exposure, please let me know.

Losses. I haven't had a huge loss myself but I see people reacting very strongly when they lose a lot of stuff. Be it losing an expensive ship to pirates, or falling vitim to scam, or being betrayed by someone who you thought was your friend as in cases of corp theft. When people lose 90-99% of their possessions which they took many months if not years to acquire they start thinking about leaving the game.

Client/server performance.
The endless recent (well, not quite so "recent") unscheduled/accidental downtimes, the prolonged downtimes after a patch, the ever-decreasing (FPS-wise) performance of the client with no significant gameplay improvement, the omnipresent lag both in crowded and less crowded systems due to the almighty "only on downtime" load balancing, the UI freezes in the most awkward or critical moments... and so on and so forth.

a) missions can generate more isk than 0.0 ratting, if you're good at missions and don't have access to 'the best' ratting areas
b) 0.0 is a friendly place. Seriously. Sure, gatecamps are a pain in the butt, but meh. Suck it up. 0.0 itself is warm and friendly. It has a rep of NBSI, you get shot just cause you're a neut, you get podded because they can tell your pectorals are too small... etc... but really 1) it's basically empty most of the time so you can rat/mission unless you're dumb, 2) if you're a nice guy, the locals welcome you, unless you're dumb. See the pattern? It's not your SP, it's YOU. I'm very sure a 2 month old newb could come down, talk intelligently and respectfully, and get a corp invite pretty quickly.
I've recently relocated to 0.0 and I love it there. The locals are happy to see me. Heck, I came into a station obviously being camped by nasties, and all I had to do was ask in local was 'so, what's going on?' They replied... 'bad timing dude, don't undock'. So, yah, I'm a neut and they'd gank me if I undocked, but they politely responded to me and warned me... unlike high-sec, where some lame duck griefer suicides your freighter w/o so much as a 'by your leave'.
I'm happy where I am, tbh. Screw high-sec.
Seriously.
Unless you're red, or stupid or mouthy or a one day old alt;) Then I'll gank you __________________________________________________ FOLD. The Ultimate PVP. It really is Us vs. Them. clicky |

For me it is the attributes.
The never ending thought of my attributes being set wrongly, but at the time I didnĘt really care, but now after 3years and max learning skills + 5implants and still looking over them thinking that if I had just set them different I would have had 5 more in per and 4 more in wis (I am a combat pilot).
And the pain it is to know that if I have to get the most out of it I will need to make a new char and lose those 25m+ sp I gathered.
That is what I find the harshest in eve.
------------------------------
Have to agree on it being the attributes.
I'll never really come to terms with having to deal with an error I made 4 years ago (Industry seemed exciting back then ).

yah, this does suck. I 'sort of' made the right choices, but I still have 3 more points in charisma I could have put somewhere else... and maybe a point less in intelligence.
Too bad there weren't Achura when I was born (grumbles).
At least I didn't choose 'intaki'

(Ab)using game mechanics discouraging to help newbies.
There are a couple of tactics used by (older) players, that make it really a PITA to help a new char to find it's way into the game. Yes, I know there are ways around those tactics. But they're troublesome, uncomfortable, annoying. And most of the time I decide to not to go out of my way to help a (supposedly) newbie therefore.
I'm not concerned about me losing a ship. If I do so (hasn't happend yet), well, my fault (and loss). I'm more worried about the new players who might feel like everybody is turning their cold back towards them or ignoring them.
