Edited by: Urran on 14/08/2007 21:17:27 I'm near the end of my free trial and well...I want to like this game. I really do. There's all kinds of cool features that I'm pretty sure I can't find anywhere else. But it's buried under months of skill training, endless endless grinding, and an absolutely unbelievable amount of just sitting around waiting for stuff to happen.
As far as I can tell the only way you can begin having fun is to either invest months of time until skill training which you'll have to spend either grinding or just, well, not playing; or be part of some huge corp. Being part of a huge corp in itself seems to require months of investment, so it doesn't really help most of the time.
Should I actually keep going? Have I just been doing something wrong?

Something I recommend every newcomer is the EVE Ivy League, they'll teach you a lot about how to play EVE and hopefully to enjoy it in a shorter time than you could manage on your own.

you dont have to grind, ever and you can still be a billionare. you can pvp either with small gangs or large fleets in a t1 frig with basic skills. If you need ISK steal it, There are many many ways to do so and all are much more enjoyable than mining or missioning.

Edited by: An Anarchyyt on 14/08/2007 21:24:12 Think of the skills as things to do in the future. Currently, with the amount of skill points you start off with, you don't need to sit there and wait. Unless of course your idea of fun is nothing less than sitting in a Mothership.
Also, I'd second the Ivy League/Eve University or some other similar corp.

There is no need to convince you. Go mining for an hour so I can steal from you.

You can have fun 5 minutes from now. Grab a few friends, get yourself in frigates and go fly around some low sec systems. Attack people or get shot at. Learn the pvp rules.
Dont let the fear of losing a ship hold you back. You will lose hundreds of ship in Eve, or not have fun at all.

Jump in with both feet. Get in over your head.
I recommend joining a newbie friendly corp, like the aforementioned Ivy League. Nothing will get you going and make things happen like joining a good corp.
Good luck!

Eve is a slow game. It takes time and effort, and (unlike many other mmorpgs) some brains and guts.
It's not for everyone. My hunch is that if you need convincing, it's probably not for you.
Joining a starter corp like eve university will speed things up, and you won't have to spend so much slow time doing nothing. But it will never turn Eve into quake.

this game was boring as **** for me in the beginning, the phrase (and video) "fear and loathing in high sec" comes to mind, join them ivy league guys and learn how to fight even if you won't be awesome at it for awhile. Didn't have anything like that when first started, it was just lots of flying around mining or doing missions buying sexy mods to fit on my ship (or sexy ships) untill i got good enough to join my buddys out in 0.0 ---

Edited by: Tsukiko Ishida on 14/08/2007 21:57:17 Urran, you are doing what I and 90% of every one ells did. Your trying to play by your self. It gets so boring and drawn out by doing this. Also, you probably not figured out what you want to do in the game or taken a look at some of tools out there for EVE that will help with this.
For tools, I would get EVE Mon and Ship Fitter. The will help you figure out what you might need to train to fit a ship, and what you can fit now to be better.
Next, Mingle!!!! It really helps if you do this. Look at corporations that interest you and help you to grow. Even if there big like Ivy League. Also, most good corporations have some sort of voice communications. So not only can you type to people, you can talk to them as well. It really dose make a big difference.

I'm a bit confused, why do you have to grind? Your skill books don't train faster if you kill npc's.
The Big Official Dude gave a decent link to learn the ropes. Good luck.

You sir are right. Not to mention that being in a big corp/alliance means waiting hours upon hours for a gang to form up. lots of SUPER laggy fights (no fun) and super boring times (hours upon hours) shooting at POS's.
If you find a small corp to join, you will be flying around for hours upon hours just trying to find someone to shoot at, Or end up having your 5 man pack shot down by 10 carriers and 50 other peeps in a blob.
There is too much stupid crap in eve to list here.
EVE has gone downhill IMO. In fact I'd recommend going to another game. I have been playing for over 4 years and seldem log in anymore. It was alot of fun at the start of EVE, best game ever. Sorry to say nowdays its starting to suck.
Do yourself a favor and give some other games a try.

Not all of us live for the pew pew way of life, nor in 0.0 space. Some of us actually ENJOY mining and market trade. There are also many successful lone wolf pirates out there too, and not always deep in 0.0, but often in lowsec.
~~~~ ~~~~ ~~~~ Take away the risk and it would make flying around in space utterly pointless.
Take away the flying around part and you make EVE into a space themed spreadsheet application. |
As a player who has had 3 account in eve for about the 4 year mark, I would have to say that Eve is the only game where I am still doing stuff now that I havent done before, that is how deep the game is. Regardless of some tainted or jaded people, Eve is still the only game I would recommend; although I never tell me mates my char's names, as I could not be doing with their endless "What does this do?"
(PS Eve Uni for you go now be there apply soon purple monkey dishwasher)
Ohhhh, I really like this quote. Some of my best times in EVE are when I join a suicide gang and jump in on a gatecamp outnumbered 3-1 and still get a few juicy kills before dying in glorious combat. Sometimes I go, hmmm I wonder how many carriers I can get on my lossmail :)
best advice i can give you is relax and enjoy it. ccp was brilliant with the skill progression system as it leaves you to enjoy the game doing whatever it is you want.. as long as you don't stay used to typical linear progression in MMOs and feel like there is something you SHOULD be doing.
eve is like wine, though.. it really does get better with age. i've taken two breaks for a couple months each but can honestly say that my love for this game has only increased over time as i've gained access to more and more toys.
gotta have a little patience, though.. but like most things you have to wait for, the reward is usually awesome. well, for a month or two until you set your sights on the next goals.
Haven't got a clue about the "grinding" aspect, or the "months" of skill training. Like many others I was pvp'ing in 0.0 after a couple of weeks.
If you need convincing by a third party to play this game, then it is not for you
It is a sandbox, you make the fun, you create the drama yourself.
EVE is not for the impatient. Yes it will take you months to be able to fly a HAC or Command Ship with any proficiency, but there is plenty to do while you skill up...like shoot things with friends.
Oh did I mention friends, that is the key to this game. If I knew you, I would take you out in hostile alliance territory, dodging blobs, ganking and yarring it up Even if you only flew a T1 fitted frig.
Fly in gangs, make some friends, and experience killing, and running for your life
I, erm, like kill things and stuff |
All your assumptions are wrong, just join a small pirate or merc corp and become part of their adventure while turning into a more experienced and skillful pilot by the day.
