Just to update, yet again:
My sister is doing a series of performances to promote her 2nd CD release. It is in New York City so I've sent a ticket to my daughter to come up here to me and then we will head down to New York City to see the concert. This is the first concert so my parents and 4/5 siblings (Singer sister included) will be there as well.
After that we'll drive down to Philadelphia to see other family that we both have. Philadelphia is the town I was raised in and where she was born. Ironically enough Long Island NY is where I was born and where she was mostly raised. So we'll be seeing my brother who can't show up and I'll be meeting her mother's side of the family for the first time.
There should also be time for me to show her the house I grew up in, the school I went to, and all kinds of memorable spots for me. Just the biggest most important ones as Philadelphia is the town I not only grew up in but always returned to when my calling hasn't taken me other to other cities and/or states.
If you happen to be in Brooklyn, and like Jazz, we'll be at Bam Cafe, 30 Lafayette Avenue Saturday night. Just look for an angel singing and ask where her ugly brother is standing.

Congrats, there are few things in life more heart warming than unexpected family reunions after a very long time. May you all have a bright future ahead of you.

Shar, What a truly brilliant story! I wont go in to details of my troubled childhood, save to say that your story had me in tears. One, of joy for you, and two, of sadness that I have not had such a happy outcome.
God Bless you. You will never know just how much I mean that from the bottom of my heart.

OP i know just how you feel,
my niece was taken by her mother, we hadn't seen her in 16 yrs. my brother had passed shortly after she was born.
and one night out of the blue my wife answers the phone to hear "um, do you know a (my brothers name)", and 2 days later she was back in our lives just after turning 18.
my mom, her grandmother almost had kittens. ----------------------------------------------- I have come here to chew bubble gum and kick ass, and I'm all out of bubble gum" |

Well... ... I got to meet her as she got off the bus in Dover NH. Much to my dismay she resembles me a lot. However it appears that the damage of my looks doesn't keep her from turning a few heads. Go figure. Due to heavy traffic, and a moronic driver (me), we missed my sister's solo performance at the Brooklyn Academy of Music by about an hour. We did meet up with her and the rest of the family. Mom & Dad watched all the grandkids and we all headed out to do some moderate clubbing at Chez Lola. Being an old bugger, and designated driver, I didn't do any drinking so I simply ordered a few drinks and let my daughter have them and moaned about the music being too loud.. (She didn't like the Guinness Stout too much.) Afterwards we hit up an all night diner and made nuisances of ourselves (not much) with the wait staff. (18 people decending upon them at 2 AM is a nuisance in itself). I was liberally roasted, my daughter providing a unique and time-limited vulnerability which my siblings shamelessly used, and had a good time giving almost as good as I got. (I only had old ammo but being the oldest I could still pull out diaper stories!) We left NYC and drove down to Philadelphia finally getting to sleep about 6 AM Sunday. Since then we've also taken time to get her added to our cellphone plan and other sundry things for a girl at Uni. We slept in late today, typing from the hotel public access terminal, and are about to head out for a breakfast at "The Great American" in Bensalem. (I'm a walking plug-o-matic for places ain't I?) And yes. I am very secretly overwhelmed by it all. She's frighteningly like me but in some ways very different. I'm trying to do the strong supportive type, my best role, but the gushy center keeps trying to push out. I'll cure that by podding a newbie or two when I get back to eve ... or perhaps not. As a final plug: My Sister has this myspace spot with some music samples. And I've been told she's delighted that her older music can be downloaded via various peer-to-peer networks. She owns her music, totally, so... enjoy her sweet sulty sounds. And no, I'm not getting any a complimentary CD for anyone. Heck I haven't gotten a copy of her latest myself... and its not from lack of asking!! Gotta love women, even your own family eh? PS: I haven't had the heart to tell her that her myspace page looks really bad with firefox. Sadly changing people from IE to firefox one at a time is a very slow process. I'm working on my family though... still working on them.
