My girlfriends PC is a few years old but not ancient.
She has downloaded the client so everything ok there.
This is what happens -
Double click EVE shortcut. Splash screen appears. Splash screen box turns black for a few seconds (I expect log-in screen to appear next) There is an audible *click* which seems to come from the monitor. Full screen goes black and monitor green light goes to orange standby.
Tower remains on, but cannot switch monitor back on without restarting tower.
Is this a graphics card problem? Does anyone know any possible fixes for this?
Thx.

If you run eve fullscreen, try switching to windowed by pressing alt+enter when the screen turns black. That might get you so far that you can turn down the resolution of the client (if thats the problem).

Thanx for the reply but that didn't work...the monitor seems to have died and is stuck in standby.
Anyone else got any ideas or suffered the same problem?

I would attempt to rule out the monitor as the problem. If you have another monitor or can borrow one, do so and see what happens.

Hello..
sounds like the Graphics card is giving up... could be that it's just not up to playing Eve, could be that it's broken, could be that the PSU isn't good enough for the card... could be other things too but that's what it sounds like to me..
could be too that the game is set to a too high resolution for the card and/or monitor or at a too high frequency..
what card is it?
can you play other full screen games on it?
try swaping monitor, graphics card
: )

As mentioned above, it sounds like either a settings error, or a faulty graphic card.
Try first to press ALT+ENTER while you have the black screen. Do you have sound, or is it silent? If the game DOES appear, try setting a lower resolution and then place the game in fullscreen again.
In the case that this doesn't help, try running another DIRECT3D compilant game (just about any 3d accelerated game nowadays). Does it work? Does it run in fullscreen? If it works, it's definately EVE that is setup wrong.
If it doesn't, and the ALT+TAB trick doesn't work, it's your graphic card that is burned OR it's a too weak Power Supply Unit (PSU). Either the 3d chipset on the card is burnt out (thus displaying all normal graphics like windows, but not displaying 3d accelerated content like games), or your PSU doesn't supply enough power to drive the card.
What graphic card do you have, and have you been able to play EVE on it before? How much power does the PSU Produce? 300W, 350W, 400W, 500W+? All this is useful information for us to try to help you.

Edited by: Lorissanna on 22/08/2007 12:03:13 I had pretty much the same thing happening with the exception that my system locked up after being in the game for a minute or two.
I suspected my card but wanted to rule out any software/driver issues before delving into my system. (I hate having to disconnect and reconnect all those cables)
As it turns out it was not a software issue but instead a graphics card issue. I yanked my card out of the PC and gave it a quick once over, blowing out the fan and giving it a visual inspection. I then had the idea to check the fan on the card. As it turns out the fan was bad. Instead of picking up a new card and spending more money that I don't have, I picked up a replacement fan at the cost of US$15 +S&H.
I am not sure if this will help you but I certainly hope so. Rule out the DX/Driver/display mode issues first though.

if i read the OP correctly he can't even start even as the login screen doesn't even show, is this correct? because then stuff like alt+enter and eve running fullscreen are irrelevant as EVE will only go fullscreen after login when entering character selection.
so, can you login or does it stop between the splashscreen and the login box? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I had exactly the same problem last night. Its actually quite easy to fix -just update your graphics drivers, thats all i did!
Simple but effective.
