where are they now? What do they do?
I eve been around since early beta, sadly enough I didnÆt play after the game came out, you will understand if you where in betaà..the horrors.
Any way, I got 10 people to play eve many of them got multi accounts, 3 of them became Elite Pvprs, and 2 of them became filthy rich industrialists, however the rest didnÆt pass the 1 year mark, they still have their accounts running and trained for future use, and a shamed few went out to play other games.
Ironically since I know 90% of them in real life, and we play in a personal network with 12 PCs and all that, it was strange that 3 of them stopped playing eve and stopped showing up. Soon after one of them literally said ôok I am coming out of the closest, we play wowöà..which in itself was very amusing.
Today, we the eve players hold a few PCs in the network, while the rest play wow in the backgroundàyou can imagine the smack talk, but u know that eve players are much better in that.

Edited by: ForumPosterAlt on 19/08/2007 07:09:14 All the ones that I've referred to it eventually quit during the learning skill grind. Don't know why tbh, grinding the learning skills has always been my favorite part of eve. So exciting and fun. You'd think that the learning skill grinding would leave a really good first impression on newbies.

Once you do your time and get enough SPs and isk you can really get into the game. Quite honestly its the long assed 3 months of mandatory waiting in order to fly anything worth a damn that drives players away.
When you first play eve you're going 100 miles an hour in your head, I wanna do this, I wanna do that, cool omg this is so awesome. Then you get to the point where you want to do something more special. Like a level 3 mission and be able to tank and/or dps worth a damn.
Well thats too fkn bad. Some designer at CCP who thinks hes cleaver with math thought up an equation for skill training and blanketed it across the entire damn game, encompassing even the all important "newbie experience".
And newbies respond by playing wow. Who loses really. Players will just play what they find fun or what they are addicted to. Devs will act like they don't care, which they might not. But if they paid a little more attention on how many trial accounts never ended up subscribing, and why they weren't, they probably would.
Eve is a cool game its just really hard to get into. Im somewhat glad however because I don't think the servers could handle too much more than they are already.

I have been told i'm not allowed to talk about eve in RL as the people I do talk to it about end up flying strange star vessels roaming systems for hours and hours until the sun comes up.

I think most of the other mmorpg's out there start giving quests to players right from the start, and there are more and more quests to do while they level their characters. So it gives them something to do.
In Eve, it can actually be pretty complicated to get started with missions for a newbie. There are no npc's standing around with a "!" over their head, so they dont know what to do once they undock.
I remember not knowing what to do myself when I was new. But I knew I wanted to make more money, and that would mean a better ship, so I checked the market for what I needed to do. Train skills, get money for Bantam basically. :)
Then when I had mined for a while, I had enough money to equip a combat frigate and start doing level 1 missions. But I remember it being very difficult finding a agent. I had no idea how to do it.

Yeah, I've found that the few I've brought into the game have all quit during the learning skill grind. On the upside, the learning skills might weed out the impatient, but at the end of the day you pretty much force newcomers into two months of tedium, which can be not-so-great.

Yeah from the day i started playing eve to today, the only little whine that has stuck with me since my noobie days is that they should just remove ALL the learning skills from the game and boost everyones attributes by 10.

It drives me mad when I see people post like this. It is so untrue, especially now when characters start with ~750k more SP than I did. Now admittedly if you're playing for the long term, the first month or so is slow, skillwise, while you get your learnings done, but I know for a fact that new players can be doing stuff in 0.0 after 2 weeks, and within 3 months they can be a highly valued player.
Skills are nice. Stuff is nice. Joining good corp early on is a very big help indeed.
Attitude is essential.
You can look at EvE in 2 basic ways:
(1) You can cry that you won't be able to do everything for years (2) You can rejoice that there will still be new things to do for years
There's a huge amount of stuff you can do even solo in hi-sec in your first month. This I know. After that you're good to go in NPC 0.0. If there are any corps primarily composed of new players who want to get a foothold in 0.0, try Curse. It's fairly quiet, there are NPC agents for income for characters who aren't ready for 0.0 ratting and the mining is far too poor to attract established, old 0.0 corps, but much better than lo-sec. There are lots of NPC stations to base out of, and running missions for Angels/Serps will quickly get you jump clone standings if you keep at it.
EvE is for people who want to be challenged. The harder it is, the bigger the achievement when you succeed. It can be done, but if it was easy, who'd want to do it?
Think. Work. Fight.
Win.

I got one good friend of mine to play, and given his stance towards MMO's ( "They are rubbish, and I would never pay a monthly fee to play a PC-game!" ), it is a pretty spectacular achievement. Heck, he even paid 6 months of game-time in advance. :) ----

As I stated before, EVE Never Fades was IMO the best EVE related video so far. Other videos/trailers are good as well, but ENF simply has everything needed for hooking up person who meet EVE for first time. Other video stuff is just too much EVE comunity friendly, and those does not say much about game itself. ENF Rocks! Btw I hooked up 4-5 persons I believe, and one more friend is about to be hooked

0 No matter how I tried none of my RL friends playing EVE. Most of them are playing LA2. One of their arguments was "There is no way to catch up with you by killing NPCs". And all my explainations that combat in EVE is about tactics and setups and not about skillpoints couldn't help.

2. One went back to playing WoW after the trial and the 2nd was whining about the $19 monthly fee when he was creating his character (despite me explaining to him that its only Ç14.90), so i don't think he'll stick it out beyond the trial preiod. Showed EVE Never Fades and This is EVE vids to loads of peeps in work, but don't know if any have started playing EVE.
