Step 1: Be an extremely athletic latent genius with a degree in astrophysics and aeronautic engineering. Step 2: Fill in the application form. Step 3: Be an astronawt.
Not really that difficult. --------

A little derail, but looking at pay
Quote: Salaries for civilian astronaut candidates are based on the Federal Government's General Schedule pay scales for grades GS-11 through GS-13
Meaning $50(ish) grand as starter wage.... omgwtflol? What kinda crap pay for a high-risk job demanding a minimum of a Bachelor degree is that?
Jeebus, I make more than that doing techsupport... ---

Yeah, I'm thinking I will apply next time around :)
I guess it depends on what skills you bring to the table...
I'd like to see how many astronauts there have been over the years with just a Bachelor's though... Probably most of them have been the pilots...

You need a minimum of a Bachelor in a relevant field, plus 3 years experience in some relevant field.
A Master will count as 1 years experience
A Doctorate will count as 3 years experience ---

Yeah, I'm not sure which they prefer, a total book worm or a more experienced person.
I only have a Bachelor's, but 10 years experience in the Aerospace engineering field...
Considering the nut-job involved in the love triangle debacle, and the drunk astronauts, maybe I do have a shot... I don't plan to kidnap anyone, and I rarely drink, lol...

I think the going rate is 20 mill for a space station visit courtesy of the Russians...
If I were to win the powerball lotto, that would be my first vacation destination.
I heard the space station is pretty stinky inside...

Sub-orbital flights with folks like Branson and Diamandas and Rutan will probably run you a couple mil, and multi-day trips with the russians currently run 25-30 million. There's several private companies that are looking to replicate what the russians can give you for 10-15 million that should be have regular service going by 2010.
For NASA, you'll want a degree, three years of experience, and if you want a chance in hell of going up, a shedload of credentials from people that the guys at JSC know, a couple thousand hours of flight time, military or otherwise, looks good on your resume too.

Hmm, I thought the sub-orbital flights were in the range of $200,000...

That may be. I don't do a lot of work with Rutan but the last meeting I was tagging along in a 2,000,000 ticket was mentioned. Seemed way too cheap for an actual orbital flight so I figured they were talking about suborbital, might be something different

Out of curiosity, what type of work do you do where that information would arise in one of your meetings? If you don't mind me asking...

I'm a mid-level peon that got onboard early at one of the aforementioned 10-15 million a ticket orbital tourism companies. With luck, in ten years I'll be one of the guys making millions despite having no appreciable skills
