Very frustrating. The current thing I've come across is when the game reboots my system and I come back occasionally XP will pop-up a "X files are corrupt in X ccp directory" and I have to run scandisk to try and fix them before trying to play again.
For over a week now I haven't been able to play EVE. I have tried multiple video drivers, run scandisk and defrag, updated directx, run dxdiag, messed with msconfig(removed antivirus programs and clutter from startup), even reinstalled EVE. Nothing works.
The closest I've gotten was when I switched all graphics sliders to "best performance" in the Nvidia driver control panel. But that only gets me maybe a minutes time before the game crashes to the desktop or causes a full system reboot. And wth those graphics settings all of the text is blurred and unreadable.
I've got a P4 1.7Ghz CPU with a Geforce 4 ti 4200 128mb 512mb RAM and I'm running Win XP home edition
currently using nvidia driver 53.03 but have also tried 45.23 and 44.03 with little difference. I also tried using "Nasty File Remover" between driver switches.
sucks, I can't even log on long enough to change skills while I wait for a game fix. Guess I chose the wrong time to try out this game.

Mine happens when I begin a warp sequence. Right after my ship computer says, "warp drive active".
Last one was a BSOD in XP.

I must say, I am having the same problem, switched over all my computer parts. And now I cannot even get to the log on stage. I tried to reinstall EVE, and it seems that the last 3 patches are messing it up. I have played this game since it came to North America and developed my character and now I cannot play and I am spending my hard erned money on nothing.

I can't log in unless I clear out my cache directory before starting eve. Otherwise it just stops responding when the splash screen comes up and tells me I need direct X 9.0b even though I have already.

Hi, I was a computer tech a number of years so here are some ideas:
1. Each of you check your Motherboard manuals and find out what Interrupts each slot uses and what the AGP slot uses. I know that many motherboards do not share IRQ's as they are supposed to... and especially not with Video / Hard Drive Controllers or with Certain Network Cards.
2. If that doesnt do it, in Video settings, turn all performance to Best Picture quality. Then make sure you are in 32 bit color mode and 1024x768 resolution. Then check that anti-aliasing is set to "application selected" and that bitmap textures, fog effects etc. are all at defaults.
3. If you have the newest video, sound, network and DirectX drivers and none of this works, then there is a good possibility that your Registry has some artifacts floating around screwing up the works... especially if this is an install of XP more than 1 year old. The solution then is backup what you want to save, wipe the drive, and reinstall it all.
4. The only other idea I can come up with is possibly a hardware device scramming the bus or spamming the bus. This used to happen when a controller chip (serial port, parallel port, game port, usb etc.) was going bad and would do some really odd stuff. One way to check that is to turn off usb, parallel, serial and game ports and see if Eve still is crashing.
Why do crashes show up in Eve? Eve really pushes memory, video and hard drive transfer... so if the system is ever going to *****, Eve is a good one to show you it can.
Wish you all Luck in this !

I have the latest drivers, just installed the VIA 4-n-1 4.49v - no improvement.
Installed latest 4.10 ATI driver - no improvement.
Defragged HD - No Improvement.
This morning I powered down my Cable Modem and home router. Hoping this will improve packet handling. These devices has been up for 4 months and could possibly have routing errors.
My mobo doesn't have IRQ switches.
I don't think whiping my HD and reinstalling everything will work since all other games (non-MMOLRPG) work fine.
I'm an atheist so praying is out of the question....hmmm any more suggestions?

Oh and, I was able to rid all of these problems after the last patch (Castor) but with the latest patch I have BSOD, CTD, lockups more than ever.
Oh, and I am running two accounts on the same computer. Which I have been doing for months. My honest opinion is that a code change is the root to my issues.

Turning down sound accelleration to "NONE" doesn't help me. Even is I run one account without sound (set to 0.0) the same effect happens, crash, lockup (mostly), CTD, BSOD.

I'm currently running ati drivers 3.10. Just after Castor I had frequent issues with ctd's and system locks. Someone mentioned relaxing the ram timings which I did, from 5,3,2,2 to 6,3,3,2.5 - system locks vanished and ctd's are few and far between now. (never had a BSOD though). Oh I'm running 2x256 Corsair TwinX ram PC3200 with an AMD 2100 clocked @ 2.1Ghz w/ 9500(NP)gfx card.

lesson: if you're backing up your hard drive onto CDs, use decent quality CDs and check them once burned before formating your hard drive.
Well, I reinstalled xp fresh. Fresh new drivers, no clutter. no nothing. And suprisingly EVE worked! I had almost 3 glorious hours of game time before EVE crashed again, freezing my computer. Now if I try to load EVE the EULA and logon screen graphics are all garbled (not going to bother going further).
As if having the game mess up my OS (admitendly half of it was me trying to get the game to work) wasn't enough, due to my idiocy I lost several CDs worth of files and spent a day and a half trying to get my computer back to a functioning state. But EVE still wont work. all that for nothing.
argh, sorry I just needed to wine a bit.

this crashes thing is really anoying, i dont know what changed in the last patch but right now i cant play EVE; my comp completely freezes after a few minutes playing, sometimes i cant reach my skills window and then it freezes again... aghhhh this problem is frustrating, ive tryied everthing imaginable with my computer but its still the same. The only thing that helps me is deleting the cache dir, this gives me 3-5 mins of gameplay, then... lockup. Im pretty sure its a code bug, it only happens with this game and since the last patch. ive benn playing with other directx9 games and none of this happens with them. So, i guess there are now enough reports to ccp start looking for this bug.

same problem, except it always seems to happen when i click on a bookmark in my P&P tool, or one of the open windows for bookmarks you get when you double click on a folder of them in there. i finally wisened up and started using the ones in my nav menu, but it's annoying as i usually set course by ones from the next system so that i jump as soon as i hit the gate. not to avoid campers, mind you. just saving time going back n' forth between two systems.
i must have CTDed at least 20 times over the past two days.

Exactly same thing here ... whenever I right click on the People and Places section to warp etc it crashes me instantly to desktop. I can, however, also use the navigation to get around, but as above it gets annoying after a while.
Sometimes it works though, so I can't isolate the problem. This problem has been occuring for the last 4 or 5 days that i can tell - nada before that.

Hmm sounds like Gforce issue within Eve, the same card worked perfectly before the patch with 44.xx drivers.. now I CTD regardless of what drivers I install.. tried everything from 44.xx up to the current ones.
Looks like the coding in Eve for Nvidia cards is a little "bugged" at the moment
Lets hope the extended D/T on friday is a fix.

As has been mentioned earlier, lowering the timings of the RAM has helped a few people. There seam to be a connection between CTDs/hangs and memory above 512 mb. I have 2 almost identical machines where the difference is the memory. One has 512 (Eve working perfectly) and the other with 1 gb (Eve was hanging/CTD untill memoryspeed was lowered). Other problems has been with using some programs for audiocommunication (Teamsound, Rogerwilco, etc) while running eve.

I often get a CTD or re-boot when jumping or docking, and have wondered if the sound that is triggered by these events was in some way related to the problem.

I get CTD's, computer totally freezes and also a couple of Bluscreens now and then. Extremely random it seems. Sometimes it crashes every five minutes for a couple of days and then suddenly I can play for many hours without problems. It happends everywhere: it may be in space doin nothing, when targeting someone, when jumping, when docking, when sort stuff in cargo, when my ship just stand still in a station... I have read every fu***** thread about theese problems in this pages and a couple of other and have tried all suggested solutions but have no success. I have had contact with support and sent in my dx report and had a couple of suggested solutions from them also and verified that my hardware should be ok. Nothing get my game work properly yet. Today I will blow my computer completely and reinstall and try to play with as clean computer setup as possible. If it still not work I really don't know if I can stand this anymore, I really love this game and therfore I cant cope with it always crasching in my face.

Edited by: Scorpyn on 12/02/2004 15:31:10 Edited by: Scorpyn on 12/02/2004 15:29:41 I've notices that the CTD:s seem to have some connection with which area you're in... I once had a ctd about once a minute or something until I moved to another region, after which I only had one or 2 ctd:s before logging off (and I kept playing for a few hours).
The region in which I ctd:d a lot seemed to have problems - my ship changed location all the time (all of the times it was like I got a missile in my face or something and i flew backwards), so it was a pain trying to reach the gates...
This makes me believe that at least some CTD:s are caused by lag problems (probably not connection lag - I have a 10mbit line - but since some ppl say they lose their modem connections it might be something on the way that loses packets).

If i lose any equipment through this will i be re-embursed?(i dont think so). Then the only other option seems to cancel my accounts and play something else!!

Edited by: Drift Spec on 13/02/2004 01:18:47 Hmm you may be onto something there Coss DaBlade.
My PC has 1gig of ramm (DDR400) running duel channel.
My mates PC has only 512k and hardly ever CTD's or freezes.. We are both on the same connection in the same room (cable).
Our PC's are nearly exactly the same except the Vid card & the amount of ram. (eg we have the same processor and same motherboard).
I think I will have to lower the speed of the bus and maybe even disable duel channel.
Its damn sad you have to go to all this effort to make "their" client run properly. If this works then I wasted my money buying a duel channel motherboard and ram to suit... sigh very annoying.
Basically at the moment I am limited to playing the game only when I have a corp member is the same system so if I crash he can protect my ship until I either log back in or time out.
GOD DAMN FIX THIS F****NG PROBLEM !!!.. either that or refund our monthly fee!

T Master, your description is exactly the kind of problems I had. For some days I had no crashes/hangs and other days it was unplayable. Problems were completly random. I also tried everything. Reinstalled system (both win2k and winxp), changed all hardware except for CPU, ram and mainboard, changed all drivers to diffrent version with no effect. As I said earlier the thing that helped me was lowering the speed of the ram. I am sure that you have tried that but if you haven't its easy to do from the bios. I have 333 memories and turned them down to 266. 400 to 333 should do the trick. It's worth a try befire you reinstall everything.

Iv been getting more CTD's since the latest patch.. everytime it happens for me it seems.. Im right clicking on a bookmark to set destination or warp or something. Its like everytime the CTD happens.. thats what i was doing. It happend before the patch too just not as often. And im even on a fresh install and patch of the game.. i had to completely reinstall my OS after something else happend last week, so i have no idea whats causing mine. I can run for a few hours before it happens.. or it could be 30mins to an hour before it happens again. Could be something with the new handling of the Bookmarks? like now being in the right click box on open space?

This might seem very unrelated, but how many chat windows do you have open and how active are they?
Some time ago I noticed that it seems that when I'm not on the channels that have a lot of traffic, eve seems more stable. I used to be on a lot of them, but since I reduced the number of channels (and skipping the trade/spam channel) eve seems more stable. Might be a coincidence though.

great news for me, it seems the new ati catalyst 4.2 drivers really did the trick with my comp... no more crashes nor hangs in my system, i can even use antialiasing 6x again and the game runs perfectly. I tried to change every driver my computer has to previous versions with no result, al least until now; i installed them almost 10 hours ago, 4 hours logged in, no crashes, no slowing, no freezes, wish it continues like this.

Edited by: Cebraio on 18/02/2004 00:22:52 I had system hangup every time I logged on to the game. Only a few seconds passed mostly. Sometimes happened already after character selection screen. I could only restart the whole machine. This was happening after I reinstalled my Windows XP.
Computer: AMD Athlon 64 3000+ 512 MB DDR ATI mobility radeon 9600
I did the following and now it works:
1. deleted eve cache but that didn't fix it.
2. Checked 'msconfig.exe' > Startup for unnecessary or unknown tasks. Kicked the following: msmsgs (MS Messenger) STDSB.exe (dunno but don't need it) WL.exe Microsoft Office Startup
3. Set display settings to 32bit and OpenGL and Direct3D to max quality.
EDIT: Removed my ignorance. It was DISPLAY SETTINGS ON 32 BIT! Set it to 16bit and had computer frozen up immediately.
I didn't mess with grahic drivers since I can't use the regular ones with my mobility card.
Good luck

i had 7 or 8 crashes today, lost my brand new raven in the process. The crashes have definately got worse since the last patch. I'm ready to quit. I sent a petition / bug report earlier and have heard nothing back. Where's the support from ccp ?.

Well I'm here to say that I'm yet another recipient of this plague. I'm running a WinXP pro ver - AMD athlonXP 1800+ box with an GeForce Ti4400, 1Gig of ram. All my drivers are updated and it's been a fresh install of the OS. Used to play a few months ago, but now that i've come back i'm beginning to regret it. I certainly hope theres some fix for this since nothing i've done as recommended here has helped at all. Good Luck to you all.

hey all...you should crank up the EVE logserver and go run EVE and MAKE IT CRASH....then review the logserver logs and see "exactly" what happened....it is in the EVE root directory.....
here is the link to operate this tool...
http://support.eve-online.com/cgi-bin/eve_online.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_sid=kvoWaw4h&p_lva=&p_faqid=479

Seems like server related lag to me. I'm fine one day then the next I get booted to the log-in screen and the game lags incredibly. The next day it's gone.
Doesn't sound like my computer has a problem, or else that would happen all the time.
Is it sporatic for you guys?

Edited by: Etom Voke on 23/02/2004 05:12:39 Yes, I am running 3 instances of EVE, mining with 2 haulers in safe space, doing missions with the 3rd account. Absolutley no problems until this patch. Now I CTD only when I either right-click on a bookmark, or, if that works, when I left-click to "go" to the destination. But this does not always happen (sometimes it works). Otherwise it is ok. The bookmarks are an issue for me, so i am using the navigation menu (right-click in empty space) for now, but it's a pain.

I run Eve on two machines. One is:
Athlon 2.4+ GeForce5600 1GB RAM 1280x1024 WinXP
This machine appears totally stable.
The other is a laptop:
P4 3G ATI Mobility 512MB RAM 1024x768 WinXP
This has stability issues. Sometimes it'll run for a couple of hours without a problem - other times I have a fifteen minute crash-fest. I've even had BSOD from the laptop (first time I've ever seen one on XP).
FWIW both machines are playing Earth & Beyond without any problems and E&B stresses your machine more than Eve. -- (Battle hardened miner)

LOL, I'm back here again :/ Had serious CTDs/reboot crashes a while back. Tried everything, then went so far as to format my harddrive and reinstall everything. Then a couple days after that, I could play again.
Worst problems would be that around every other time I started the program the graphics were garbled and I'd have to reset my comp to get it working right (strange but seems to work).
The game has slowly gotten worse over the last couple weeks though. Increasing frequency of CTDs and freeze ups. I used to mostly get computer reboots before but not so much now.
Last 3 times I tried starting the game it froze my computer. I'll try cleaning the cache but this is BS.
One pattern I noticed: After I couldn't play the game at all I canceled my account. A week or so latter It worked fairly normaly again so I stopped the cancelation. A few days latter and I can't play again? Obviously someone wants me to pay for EVE without being able to play ;)

I just finished a week similar to all of yours. A week full of continuous crashes; at start up, trying to dock, warp, etc. I tried it all, reinstall, different graphics cards, different settings, etc. Today, however, I finally got it up and workings. Here's what I did, and if you guys think you have a similar problem to mine, feel free to give it a shot. No guarantees though.
First I ran the logserver program found in the EVE folder. This logs everything going on in the game. Once you have this thing going, create a new workspace, then get into the game and try to recreate the crash, which shouldnt be a problem if your problem was anything like mine . After it crashes, check out the log on the logserver. Look at the last thing the game used before it crashed. For me it was blue.dll and occasionally a file that starts with res (i.e resFace or resTexture). These files can be found in the same place where you found the logserve program.
This is where is where some of you may have trouble. I was fortunate because I have a friend who plays Eve, and I had him send me copies of his files. I replaced all the res files and the blue.dll and now it all works. You may be able to get the same thing if you can install Eve on a different computer and get it working. It is important that these files come from a different install than you used, because as you may have noticed, reinstalling doesnt really fix the problem.
Dont know if any of that will make a difference, but it might be worth a shot.

EVE has been running fine for me for two weeks solid. I've been in the game for up to 16 or more hours in one session with multiple applications running in the background all day including another client of EVE and voice communications and during this time I have had no crashes.
Don't get me wrong I am not saying the game does not have compatibility issues with some software and hardware I am simply saying that on my hardware and OS which isn't that great it's rock solid. I'm still running Windows 98 too. I hope anyone having problems manages to resolve them quickly.

A strange Pattern:
Okay so for me at least, the worst performance occured durring the end of January (where I couldn't play at all for about 2 weeks almost).
Then EVE started to work again and all was fine.
Now, towards the end of February, Eve has grown increasingly unstable to the point that I can no longer play, once again.
Just thought I'd throw that out and see if anyone has noticed anything similar. I can't think of what it means, if anything.

Edited by: Calio on 25/02/2004 21:56:28 I just started EVE last weekend and have been crashing to desktop or locking up continuously since I started. I've noticed a pattern though. It seems to happen in 4 different contexts.
1) crash to desktop when I approach a new jump gate (that I never used before) or enter a new system (that I have never been in before)
2) crash to desktop when I approach a new station I haven't visited before. At stations, I immediately crash a second time when I try to log back in. So I get 2 crashes total before getting safely back into game.
3) crash to desktop when I try to get info on a new TYPE of item/ship.
4) lockup in station or crash to desktop when I call up an agent I haven't talked to before (they show up with a "!" icon in my UI until I try to talk to them and crash. Afterward I get their portrait and everything works fine. Sma ething happens the first time I try to buy a category of item.
The consistent pattern seems to be that I crash when I have to retrieve a type of data from the servers for the first time. Once I get access to the data for the first time, I have no trouble with that data again, even days later. It's almost like there is a conflict between the data installed in my comp and the data on the servers. Once the server data corrects the data on my system, that specific conflict is fixed for good.

Edited by: Etom Voke on 25/02/2004 22:28:52 Edited by: Etom Voke on 25/02/2004 22:21:34 For some reason things are a bit better now with the CTDs for me. I had a problem with the bookmarks and offer what seems to work for me. Please note that this may just be coincidence and that it may not work for you. Something similar to this appeared in a post either in this thread or another related post.
When you use the People & Places make sure that you first leftclick to the right of where it says "search" (in the empty area). This should make a small, white highlight (barely perceptible) around your bookmarks. If you don't get the highlight, proceed as follows anyway (this first step lately, as I see it, may not be necessary, but I don't "mess" with what seems to work for me). After that, hover your mouse over the bookmark you want to use; when a popup appears describing the bookmark, leftclick the bookmark to highlight it. After that, make sure the popup is still present, though I think at this point it may not be necessary. Now you can rightlick the bookmark and select as usual. Again, please note that this sequence I am following may not be helping anything; maybe I just don't CTD anymore using bookmarks, but it "seemed" to clear my bookmark problem.
On another note, I sometimes CTD after I hit enter after typing in the corporation chat, but this is a rare event.

Edited by: Etom Voke on 25/02/2004 23:52:55 UPDATE. The above is confirmed for me. When a popup does not appear over a bookmark, I get a CTD if I try to use that bookmark. Even if I do get a popup, I will sometimes use the bookmark, it will appear to work, and then I will CTD (rare), or rather, back to the login screen. I advise to close and restart the client since on a prior occasion the client advised me to close it and restart it.

I had the same problem. I reinstalled everything but to no-avail. However I do not have the problem anymore. I did this by pressing 'esc' then at on the 'general' tab I selected 'show exception window' (or something like that) on the right hand side of the menu, this should catch any exceptions. Then everytime the machine would normally crash it didn't but instead displayed a little 'system error' window within the game which I close and carry on. Hope this helps as it has for me.

In response to this..
Before this new patch, I used to get a CTD about 0-2 times every session I played.
Well, after it came out... It'd run fine for maybe an hour, and then when some rats would show/me destroy them, it'd ctd. I would try to relog with it crashing before I could get to the login screen, randomly crashing up till the loading of where I was.
Before I posted this, I had a string of 17 CTD's in a row, followed by 3 more after I FINALLY got back in to try to haul my ore back to base. This is highly annoying, and I hope it's fixed soon!

Was running fine before this patch and now it runs like crap... frame rate is horrible, plenty of lag, lots of errors in rendering... ships disappear, windows dont load fully. CCP's QA team sucks!

For the last three days I have been trying to sort out the IRQ problem with EVE, today I seem to have struck lucky, I thoroughly cleaned all dust from the pc and swapped my soundcard to a different pci slot, Voilla, it worked and hasnt crashed all day. I realise this won't work for everyone, but its simple and at least worth a try.

Eve+nVidia GPU's seem to be at odds with each other atm.
We know that the 56.xx series of detonators cause texture and rendering problems. I have just finished testing 60.72 and Eve was absolutely DIRE. Login, select char, load station UI and BANG system locks solid with major graphic corruption.
Rolled back to 53.03, can start the game now but system locks now very random, sometimes 5 mins sometimes 5 hours

Try turning down all your timings for RAM and gfx card in motherboard bios, but if u dont know what u are doing then ask a friend who does to help you.
Slowing down the ram and gfx settings has finally given me a stable EVE game. I've turned off Fast Writes, set RAM to "normal" instead of "fast". And I've also changed the setting that enabled gfx BIOS being cacheable, to not cached, or something like that.
Since doing those changes Eve is now stable for me where before it woud regularly lock the whole computer.
Now, it only dumps to the desktop when there is lag. And I know it's Eve lag because I can ping yahoo fine with low ping times, but Eve's ping times rocket.
ping 166.63.217.6 -t
That is the Eve ping address, if you get times over 200m/s then u will have problems playin the game. Mostly I get 20-40ms, but whenever I undock, warp, open markets or any other action that requires a burst of data from Eve then it rises to 300, 400 or even over 1 whole second and times out.
[rant coming] Eve, please increase your bandwidth so we can play the game properly, or improve your servers to stop them lagging so much qhen they are asked to do something.
World Record - Most Players Online For 5 Weeks In A Row - Also 5th time the server has had to be rebooted during the middle of it too! Why aren't you telling us about the server reboots and reasons for them, and the cure?
It's a great game, please don't ruin it by giving us poor server response and strangled bandwith. Thanks for making Eve. |
