Originally by: Dal Thrax tbh I've never had a pirate try to ransom me, just kill the ship and pick over the loot. That said while I wouldn't pay I do know one guy who ejected from his ship as ransom, warped back in a Velator, reboarded his ship (now that lock was lost) and ran into a pirate outside the station in a pod about to warp off to collect his ship. I hear the pod made a nice squishy sound.

Ransoms should always be paid. Pirates are, for the most part, very honest and will let you go after you pay up. It is just better from an economic standpoint. In fact, if they are very nice about it, they deserve a tip afterwards. That way they know they can get a ransom and may be easier on you the next time you get caught.
Certainly no one would post a facetious position simply because the advocated result is in their best interest.

Paying random would assume I was stupid enough to get caught in some pirate in the first place.
Really there is no excuse for that.

I might if there were a game mechanic than insured me that the ransom would let me fly away. As it is now there is no trust relation between me and someone who is trying to kill me so there is no reason for me to add insult to injury.

But some pirates specialise in that!
(I would like to add that ItoI always honour ransoms.)

Nobody has EVER asked me for a ransom.
Been pirated many a time, every every every single one has just opened fire without a word.
This myth of the "honourable pirate" in EVE is just that.... a myth.

I've been ransomed twice. Both times They offered me my ship and pod for a sizable amount of cash. I then counter demanded their entire corporation, all their ISK, ships and holdings, and in return I would allow him to live.
I was blown up and podded both times, but it was still a moral victory for me.

Because of attitudes like this, this is why I just go for the kill mail. However if my victim offers and follows through with payment. I will let them go.
But anymore I leave it up to the victim to make that choice.

Some at least have honor. Although this isn't a ransom, I do know that a corporation of ore thieves honored a promise to me and actually returned what they stole from me. This from the type of people that most look down on. I've seen more dishonor from empire carebears to be quite honest. ---

I've never paid a ransom. I've never been caught by a large group of pirates AND asked for a ransom. I have been caught by large groups of pirates and been insta-popped, and I have been asked for a ransom by small time pirates, but never both.
Seeing as the only time I've ever had a ransom demand have been against relatively small pirate gangs, I usually prefer to try my luck and see if I can't fight my way out. Not as difficult as it sounds, often. And at the very least, I usually manage a revenge kill before I go down
Not that I'm against ransoms in principle. If I ever get a decent ransom offer in the right situation, I'd consider paying. --------

I would never pay. The probability of losing money due to ransom plus losing your ship is way too much to handle, it'd make me hate the game.

It's odd what lengths people go to to just get a kill sometimes :/
I offered the value of my cargo (around 100 mil) when a Bustard of mine got caught on the other side of a gatecamp. They proceeded to pop me, and then offered to sell back the goods they recovered for less than their worth (so of course I accepted).
meh,, killers pirates may be, but savvy businessmen they aren't :P

I would pay ransom if
a) it is for my ship, not the pod b) it is reasonable (~ effective insurance cost + t2 fitting / 2) and c) I like the opener (even a "yarrr" with the "10m - 10sec" line would do :D)
I've only ever been offered to pay for my pod, so no, I didn't pay ransom yet.

Edited by: Jenny Spitfire on 20/08/2007 23:39:18 I pay ransom almost every week when I go do my stuffs in lo-sec. I will definitely prefer to pay ransom in the future because it is cheaper to do so if and only if the extortionists do honor their ransoms.
It is not easy to find honorable thieves these days in a trust based policy unless there is a game mechanic that can force ransomer to honor their ransom once they have received the blood money. I have been lucky so far. --------- Technica impendi Caldari generis. Pax Caldaria!

Originally by: SiJira there is the corp ransom and the personal ransom
corp ransom is something that there is no reason to ever pay it is a joke any way you look at it as you are not in direct danger
personal ransom should never be paid but some that use implants and expensive faction mods think it is a good idea to pay sometimes - one must question their mathematical ability if half of those ransoms send you to your clone anyways
so who here has ever payed a ransom and will probably do so again in the future?
I never pay ransoms. No one ever ransoms me, as they're always in their pod and scrammed, waiting for me to let them live.

I like to give a Ghostbusters style price list...
"Well we've got to apply our standard call out fee, that's going to be 5 million. I see we'll be protecting a very valuable ship here, for that we're going to have to add in another 35 million. We are having a special on antimatter this week, that's only going to run to another 10 million!"
Normally by line 2 I've already received "spose u fink ur a big man" and I feel like I am wasting my talents...

Personal Ransom? I first estimate the cost of implants/ship/cargo/mods and compare it to the ransom demand. Then I ignore my previous calculations, set my auto-destruct and keep them talking for 2 mins. -----

I think I once payed a ransom when I first started eve (was cheaper to pay and run than replace the ship) yes it was honoured, heck after that the pirate and I started chatting in local and he gave me tips how to survive in the wilderness of eve.
Although I generally wouldnt pay corp ransoms, thats just asking to get decced and ransomed again the best 2 ways of dealing with that is to either go atm in t1 cruisers and shoot thier expensive ships or stay docked :P

Never pay. First of all you should not go into low sec with setup you are not ready to lose.
Remember that by giving them money they will gain financially more than from your loot. Also they need to go trough trouble selling looted tuff.
And remeber if you pay ransom you are the reason why even more pilots will fell victim of the piracy. And that's not nice.

You realize the insecurity is the best part of the ransom-game? I bet 90% of all ransoms are honoured - still some hardcore butchers and agressive juveniles out there...

Btw - Pretty much only ransomed once when a BS offered... we bargained a bit and we accepted and let the bird go. My corp and all people I know have honour in this game... - I'm a nice guy!!

only paid a ransom once (it was a day long ransom at that).. was expecting to get double the amount of ore. got blown up a few hours later by the guy's alt (didn't know it was his alt at the time)... eve-mailed the CEO of the corp, letting him know.
Instead of apologizing (which is all I wanted).. he blew me off... So I don't pay ransoms anymore.
I only ransomed once... a caracal.. and I honored the ransom.
As a side note.. since the day I was ransomed.. I've been training up for a Pilgrim... almost finished with the training (its been almost a year.. or longer)... and I still keep tabs on him, using a locater agent every so often.

to be ransommed u need to have isk, and seeing how i'm almost always as poor as a churchmouse
and giving up my ship? yeah right, like i'm gonna give someone my ship, unless i'm in a shuttle or cheapo friggie or something.
at 1 point was flying a t1 hauler through low sec (it was empty) and some jerks uncloaked and wtfpwned my ship without so much as a word but left my pod alone
had they asked for ransom i would have gladly paid them 2 mill (more then the ship was worth) for letting me go through unharmed, cuz now i just got annoyed cuz i had to get myself a new hauler
so... sometimes it does pay to ransom

Generally no. I will generally offer the pirate the rough value of my fittings plus a bonus depeneding on what I am flying provided he lets me warp to safety.
He can either kill me anyway and just get the value of what survives in my wreck, or he can let me go and get a bigger reward.
I'm not too bothered about being killed. I'm not short of isk. But I will not hand over isk only to then be killed anyway.

If you can't afford to lose it don't fly it in hostile space.
If you go around 0.0 or low sec get some intel, use a cheap clone, fly T1 fitted ships, etc. If you need to make a critical trip try using some common sense: cov ops frig, uberfast inty, etc.
If you're in a dangerous area in an industrial and have no back up plan I hope I meet you.
If you're flying around o.o or lowsec alone in a BS or something slow and cumbersome expect to be popped.
Pay a ransom? Pah! I was dead when I left the station and if I can I'll come back as quick as I can with a few pals and some intel on the ganking ships...
Paying ransom is for noobs or people caught with their pants down or for Amarr scum...
:)
