having played other mmo's mainly reason number 1 and some of number 5
- why stare at a male backside for hours on end? - it continued to here, except you never see the character.
- it's easier to come up with better sounding female names then better sounding male names.

5. (sorta)
My main character is male as am I but my alts are almost all exclusivly female. I started doing this back in the glory days of Everquest, when I needed an alt, it was usually for extra storage space or to grab something off a vendor in a town I couldnt get in myself. The default gender back then happened to be female, and as the gender, look, and name of mules doesnt exactly matter, they usually stayed female. As time went on I ended up being surrounded by female alts.
Also, what guy wouldn't mind having his own army of female 'alts' to serve his every whim? -- Insert fancy sig here. |

Here's a question for you.
Why do people assume that you see your character as being yourself? Wouldn't it be more obvious to see the character as someone you're assisting? Like in WoW when you try to loot something and your character complains at you that they can't carry more. There's definately an acceptance on their part that you're not them. ----- J-I-T-A It's a four letter word. |

Also you might want to add Luce Irigaray with the This Sex Which Is Not One, and perhaps the Ethics Of Sexual Difference.
If you are really interested in Gender Politics and want to use correct terms. Since, in reality, a male who chooses a female avatar is really not confused about his gender, but merely playing with the facets of Gender Bending, whether consciously or unconsciously.
Edit: Speaking of my own unconscious and bending, apparently Jinx is associated mostly with female characters, especially in the pop culture, yet, I am male and chose my male avatar with auspiciously female name, not even being fully aware of it. So, where is Dr. Freud, when you need him.
This is why I play with a female avatar...there are facets to the simple picture that change the way others relate to you. Even when they know you are RL dude some folks cant help but act differently. Its a funny mechanic to toy with and actually the first time I have in a game.
I have a friend who totally exploits guys misinterpretation of his gender in eve and plays up to it by getting free stuff. So I know I am not I am not the only plating with this mechanic. Avatars have more effect on our relation to other players than we realize.

Because I am playing myself and I have no RL gender issues, just a curiosity of what the pros and cons are of being percieved as a female. All I can really say is try it for yourself its fascinating.

I think 90% of the time, the reasoning boils down to "because I felt like it".
Seriously, I'm consistently convinced that the answer to the question "Why play a character of the opposite gender to your own?" should be "Why not?" - The game is not the problem. The problem is that you are not adapting to the game.

Playing a character has nothing to do with anything. People that play aliens, beasts, demons and various other characters do not fancy being them in real life or have an issue of being themselves or anything else.
Roleplay is just being something you are not or can not be in real life. It does not mean you wish life was like that or some deep psychological problems.
More often than not peoples actions represent what they are in real life like running from a fight or shooting down defenseless people where they should not expect it, but that is also a minority and there is no trend.

5) Sometimes I just feel like it. A good portion of gaming is getting away from the world for a while. I just see my playing as the opposite sex an extension of that.
Most often it is just aesthetics or mood.

I think it would be more accurate to say that "In most MMOs, SOME male players choose female characters because they get treated differently by other male players who assume the player is female too."
However, this only holds true if folks assume. I for one do not. I just see the person as another character. Gender does not even enter into the equation.

I used to use a female avatar in Unreal Tournament, the reason. Well I gave her a naked skin and I thought my mates would be to busy trying to look at the toon than shot it.
It didn't work. Dunno what that says about my m8s tho.

Partly for a nice avatar to look at. Partly in homage to my girlfriend. Partly for RP. Partly because the female Civire model doesn't look like she's constipated.
But mostly because I'm a ****** up deviant perv with major psychosexual issues that I can't come to terms with in RL, so I'm acting it out in a goddamn internet spaceship game to sooth my troubled soul.
There, are you happy now, Mr. Curious? * * * In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.

#5 with a touch of #1; Frankly, male Achuras just aren't appealing to me at all, so I chose to make a very effeminate male character instead, with long, flowing silky hair.

#1 is the direct reason, and enough to make the decision fully.
However, there's the added benefit of some folks treating you better if you have a female avatar. I've only experienced this once in EvE, but it was nice to have gifts tossed my way for absolutely no reason. I don't let on, but I don't correct people's assumptions either. That guy was just really dense. Dense and rich.

I usually play a male but the reason I have chosen female in other games is I would rather not stare at a guy's A$$ since i usually use the 3rd P chase cam view.
In eve my main is a male but all my other chars are female, mainly because I think alot of guys get more ****ed off when they loose to a girl - Haradgrim [-WB-]

It's not only the face. Ok, forgot that we are talking about EVE.
So simple answer: I like girls.
If I look back, I spend endless hours in my art class in school with looking into the beautiful eyes of a specific girl. We were normal friends and never talked about it, anyway next time art class, it happened again. Was just the most exiting way to pass the time. Her face and mimics were pure art so to speak.
Maybe it's just that. So when I chose a female avatar, I don't want to say: 'This is me.' That female avatar is more like a female actor in my movie and I develop the story, move her around and enjoy watching it.
So if I'm ever roleplaying a bit with a female char, it's not because I want to be female myself, but because I enjoy watching a female doing cool things. So think the whole motivation behind it is a totally male one and based on true male desires.
Nevertheless I play several male chars, too.
Think I should have written it with a male char. It breaks the immersion.

Can pretty much sign that. I like looking at beautiful things. And the female body, face, eyes, eyebrows, hair, facial bonestructure, expressions, etc, etc, are that to me.
Males can also look nice, but a good looking female hits me in a far deeper emotional level. And I do not necessarily mean sexually. It is similar to liking the pictures of a certain painter due to his style more than those of a different painter.
And I also like to do light roleplay now and then. Most people seem to confuse playing "oneself in space" is roleplay. It isn't. It is playing someone else.
