Part of a semi-serious study on the playerbase of MMO's, I've come up with a question for you forumgoers who use opposite-gender avatars (male and female players who use opposite-gender avatars are included, dont be shy :P ):
Why do you use an avatar that is of the opposite gender to you? is it:
1. Cause you like looking at a pretty face when you login? (rawr <3 ) 2. Cause its meant as a memorial to a person close to you? 3. Cause you want to be "different"? 4. Cause you chose wrong when you created your char? 5. Other (specify in a post) -

My main is Male - all alts are female. I am in mid teens, and my main is my alter ego - the alts are just.... extra limbs that ended up as femal avatars for some reason. Had my main been female the alts would have been male - no idea why but gender's not something I consciously think about ingame or out to be honest

In most MMOs, male players choose female characters because they get treated differently by other male players who assume the player is female too.

Correct term would be not "confusion" but Gender Bending, damn it. I might recommend the following: Bodies That Matter, Undoing Gender, and, maybe Gender Trouble, all by Judith Butler. Also you might want to add Luce Irigaray with the This Sex Which Is Not One, and perhaps the Ethics Of Sexual Difference.
If you are really interested in Gender Politics and want to use correct terms. Since, in reality, a male who chooses a female avatar is really not confused about his gender, but merely playing with the facets of Gender Bending, whether consciously or unconsciously.

I have had long thoughts about my own sexuality and I do feel trapped in this body of mine, thank god I can play games online where I can choose a female face and act as if I am of a female gender.
I am also of asian heritage so I like crossdressing, macro mining and long walks on the beach if any one is interested.

I had considered saying something like that as well - the title "Gender Confusion" is a little insulting to be honest. ------------ Whiners - Unite! Tarminic - 26 Million SP in Forum Warfare. |

To give people a reason to create a thread about this every week.
Also as I didn't like how the males looked for sebestior. Although now I have spent a bit more time with the character creation tool I have changed my mind.

Interesting sources, I happen to have one of her books here (thanks to my sister :/ ).
In regards to the thread title, it was more of a jest-title than an actual serious thread starter. As i said, its not really a serious poll. If anything its for curiosity's sake and possibly depending on content, of use to an upcoming psychology writeup I may have to do anyway. -

#5 after many names being rejected this was accepted. I thought it sounded feminine so i made the character to suit. If I had thought of my alts name when i made this character my main character would be a male. I didn't think about the crazy people that like to cyber guys playing female characters on the interweb when i did it, the time I spent in FNA was crazy thank god for ventrillo and TS.

Number 5 for me. I just like making and posing characters. Bloke. Lass. It doesn't matter. I just make a character and give them a pose that looks good. I just wish there was a 4th slot on that screen purely for making and posing portraits. Like it's ever going to happen.

Edited by: Occara on 20/08/2007 21:46:33 Maybe after playing games for years you just realize that it doesn't matter.
The frequency that this comes up here is astounding. Especially considering in eve the only thing gender affects is that tiny, tiny picture of your character.
It's just a game. It's just a random choice.
All I can figure is that it gets posted by folks new to gaming who can't destinguish between fantasy and reality? It's just a game. Considering what picture you made to be an extension of yourself isn't overly healthy.
However, I suppose we all did that when we first started games where we picked an image. At first... But not for long...
Do you consider it strange when a male author has a female character in a book he writes? Or vice versa?
Do you consider any male playing tomb raider to have gender issues?
This question always astounds me, and as harsh as it is, my only response is, "Grow up!"

Broadly speaking, there are 2 ways to consider your character in a MMOG - as an alterego, an aspect of yourself (the "role-playing" perspective) or as a separate, virtual entity, with which (whom?) you spend time.
There's nothing unusual about wanting to spend time with someone of the opposite sex.

Not at all (on both parts).
Role-playing is not about yourself. It's about a character you create. It may exist in your mind, but it isn't you.
Nor is it someone you spend time with. What are characters now imaginary friends?

GameTap had a ad going on about Laura Croft when they were explaining why they decided to make her female (orginally male), it was something like "I think most gamers perfer to look at lauras firm bottom then a mans *laugh*".
For me though, I have an alt that is female and its more of an experiment of sorts. In my last MMO, players who had female avatars were hounded with interactive emotes that were supposed to be for RP purposes (things like a pair kissing, wedding kiss, etc) and generally got more attention and free stuff (can you tell the game was full of 14 year olds?) Ive noticed here in eve actually that when traveling in the same system though that my alt gets significently more convo requests then my main, which is a male protrait.

Originally by: Kazuma Saruwatari Why do you use an avatar that is of the opposite gender to you?
This is my main, the first and only paid account I had for a long time (I have a "main alt" on a diff. account now, since late march this year). However, it is by far not my first character. I had SEVEN other trial accounts before this one, and guess what, most of them were male. At least, the ones I trained up at all were, without exception. I have created a few female chars before, but just to play with the portrait generation and see an actual in-game result. Gave up most of them because, quite frankly, I didn't have the time to play, and for the others, I wasn't very happy with the way they were progressing/performing.
This char here was my first Achura character, not long after they first became available in the "bloodlines" patch. The reason to pick Achura ? The attributes, obviously. Can't say no to all nines except charisma. I wasn't planning on keeping this character, to be honest, but after the 14 days (coincidentally, I also had a good deal of spare time right then, so I was online a lot), it performed admirably and I didn't want to go through the first two weeks again. So when the time came to decide wether to create a new trial and "do it right" this time, or reactivate this female avatar account... I said "eh what the heck, I don't mind playing a chick" and went ahead... kept it ever since.
As for the avatar itself... I trust you've seen how most Achura males look like ? Yeah, I didn't want to see such a face every time I logged in either. I wasn't planning on making the avatar look too good (I hate guys hitting on female avatars, so I was trying to avaid that), but I didn't want it to look too ugly either... so it ended up looking somewhat like my sister (try making an asian bloodline look caucasian and tell me you can do it better than I did). The name ? Well, it's named after my dog (a female rotweiler) and my middle name initial. Hey, you'd be out of ideas too after creating almost 20 characters.
So, long story short, I am a guy playing a female avatar looking like his sister and named after his dog.

very interesting posts on the matter, and I do realize, yes the topic in question that I brought up is a regular showup on these forums from time to time. It still begs the question of why people choose opposite-gender characters, since its so frequent.

All my alts are female. Why?
Reason #1 and #5.....mostly #5
I'm married and have been for 20 years in September, and i'm surrounded by nurses all day as I work at a private neurological centre.
EVE is the only time I can get a female to do what I tell her first time without the obligatory falsetto ear bending. It's theraputic, and possibly the only reason i'm not currently the subject of a nationwide manhunt by the Police.
I would sup with the devil and forget to use a long spoon if it led to me spitting on the grave of nationalism.

As a male who created a male character, I must comment that I'm not above using a female character. It just so happens I did not do so in this case. I did choose an avatar that looks nothing like the real me however. If I wanted an accurate avatar, I would've become Minmatar-Brutor. Closest thing to my real face. ---

#5 and a touch of #1
I mainly play male characters (being a male), but every now and then it's nice to take a break and have female character. It's also funny to see how people treat male and female characters --------------------------- ---------------------------
Dumbledore returned from the dead and declared it hammertime, harry proceeded to break it down and Voldemort can't touch him. |
