The thing that killed Rise of Legends for me was the single player, it only let you have one army, and you couldn't defend your territories very well at all.

And i was thinking I was the only person who remembers the Megaman X Series ^^. I agree.
Also I played Empire Earth 2 and i found it fricking awesome "as long as you were smart enough to outlaw inca/turks before the game started". I played it as my main game from the week it came out to the day i started EVE "about a year". ___________

It's difficult to live up to MOO2, but the sequel is a fail of epic proportions.
this was an such a poor it totally baffled me how they could release it, buggy play, buggy AI, sooo many bugs it was crazy and the battle action was somthing out of the 80's i mean moo2 had better fight screens (hell so did Moo one!!!)

Ground control 2. They took everything great about the first game and removed for reasons that I'll never really understand.

Edited by: SoftRevolution on 21/08/2007 15:20:36 Yeah. Agreed. Ground Control 2 was horribly disappointing.
Ground Control the first was such a breathe of fresh air with the no resource (apart from space on the dropship) management and focus on tactics. Then 2 came along and made it kind of generic.
I think top of my list though would have to be the new "Clancy" games from Ubi. You've got two series there that started out as "thinking mans shooters" and have gradually gotten dumber and dumber.
The latest game was a cover shooter for pities' sake. Yes, like Kill Switch.

Another vote for MOO3. Have to put that at the top of the list. How they so royally screwed up that franchise I'll never know.
Also another vote for Deus Ex: Invisible War.

Don't kill me but I could never find a copy of ground control 1, what was different about it compared to 2?

Originally by: Drazys I know this will sound controversial but anyway... Elder Scrolls: Oblivion.
All the distinctive graphical design style of Morrowind replaced with bland and boring generic-fantasy cliches... Fully "scaling" monsters/loot so that at same bandits that wear leather armor at early game are using full Daedric armor at late game... Incredible super map system (which must be linked to orbital spy satellites) that reveals all interesting/hidden locations from long distance away, even if there is a mountain range in-between. Not a bad game, just utterly dumbed-down compared to Morrowind I think.
- Drazzy
I know exactly what you mean. But I only came to the realisation a couple of weeks ago. It was horrible because the game suddenly stopped being fun.
The level scaling made any sense of advancement pointless. There was never anything to look forward to, or any challenging enemies, or any places you'd have to stay away from, only to enter when you were ready. In the end, I didn't give a toss about my skills or my level because I knew it wouldn't make any difference when I was out goon-bashing.
I loved the idea of quick-travel at first. Then I realized that it was lazy, and it forced me to be lazy too. In Morrowind getting somewhere meant something, it took effort. You wouldn't just be there in a jiffy but you had to plan your journey and make it worthwhile. On the way you'd soak up some scenery and different locales. Oblivion is just a dumbed-down quest-o-tron where you teleport from one generic dungeon to the next.
In Morrowind everywhere had so much more character. Especially the city where you mostly had to rely on levitation to get around the windy, spindly structures and mages towers (its name escapes me). In Oblivion they are bland as hell.
All of these things got me thinking, what am I fighting for anyway? Character advancement makes no difference, and the province is barely worth saving. Screw this, I'm packing my bags for Vvardenfell. How could they get it so wrong and how come it took me so long to realise? |

Oblivion - Definately not the same as Morrowind. In MW you felt like you were going into dangerous wild territory where you could be killed, whenever you left the road. Crossing the island from one side to another was a big thing! And who lumbers "axes" into the "blunt weapons" category???!
KOTOR 2 - A very strange game, it just felt different to the original (and obviously unfinished)
NWN 2 - I'm working through this now, so far I'm really enjoying it, and I played the original to death

The sequel after Burnout 2, Burnout 2 took skill to race, the sequel had extreme rubber band AI which ment it was pointless how you raced untill the end of the last lap.

Hum. Not a sequal really but as a series FF8 was a huge let down for me after 7, the only improvement was graphical. I would have liked more innovation and a better storyline and characters. And Ms. Pac Man Oh the recent sonic games too, I played the old ones on the mega drive/genesis...a friend has a gamecube and I played a more recent one...dismal
Quote: All the distinctive graphical design style of Morrowind replaced with bland and boring generic-fantasy cliches...
I've heard similar complaints about Morrowind, that it looks too fugly and barren. What both sides seemingly fail to understand is that both games take place on different continents. Of course they're going to look different, they're entirely different landscapes!!
Ironically, the person who said Morrowind looked fugly would love 'bland and boring generic-fantasy' style areas...but he won't play Oblivion because Morrowind put him off
I can see your point if you take them out of context and see Morrowind as Game 1 on it's own, and Oblivion as Game 2 - expecting Oblivion to be Morrowind 2. But Oblivion isn't really the sequal to Morrowind - it's the 4th in a series that all take place in the same world. A world devised many years before Morrowind's inception...
That said, my preference goes Daggerfall > Morrowind > Oblivion (I haven't played Arena) I really enjoyed Oblivion, but it's a shame the game world gets smaller each time when technology increases

Edited by: Patch86 on 27/08/2007 20:40:49 (Not reading the thread so it doesn't give me any ideas):
Age of Empires 3 was poor. Played it twice, then never thought of it again.
MOO3 was bizarre. Not unplayable, but totally un-MOO-like, and nowhere near as much fun. And almost all the best features that were promised never made it into the game, meaning that there were some things that you really really needed to do (because of something that was in game) but couldn't (because the logical counter never did get implemented).
Settlers: Age of Kings was rubbish. Like AoE3, I played it twice then never thought of it again. Settlers 3 was great fun- where did it all go wrong?
The Sims 2- say what you like, The Sims was a very clever game if you wanted that kind of thing. I only played it occasionally, being my sister's game, but it was always fairly entertaining. The sequel included changes that simply changed the whole dynamic of the gameplay in to something totally un-fun. Not only that, but EA (being pieces of ****) purposefully left out most of the clever things they came up with in the various expansion sets, just so they could sell you ú100 worth of new expansion sets. This meant that playing the release of Sims 2 was such a massive step down from playing a fully expanded Sims 1 that you could barely tolerate it.
Red Faction 2: bad sequel to an imaginative console shooter. despite loving the first one, I just couldn't get enthusiastic about the second one.
Final Fantasy X AND X-2. Love all the Final Fantasy games up to and including IX, but X was a cheesy, dumbed down piece of rubbish that just reminded me of seriously low quality animT. X-2 was appallingly awful- I don't think I even got to the second "stage" before giving up in shock.
EDIT: Civ IV?! Dear god, you people have no idea how bad a bad game can be! If thats the "worst sequel" you've ever played, you've had a mighty blessed gaming life! I thought it was excellent- a real return to Civ2 grace after the let down of Civ3. Civ3 wasn't even that bad; not as good as Civ2 or Alpha Centauri, but still perfectly playable and fun enough to play. Civ IV's only real issue is that the games are quite short compared to the predecessors, but that's massively far from game destroying. All the innovative new features and concepts more than made up for it, IMO. --------
