Deus ex: invisible war. They removed so much, the game is completely lobotomized compared to the original. They took out lock-picks, keys, drag and drop inventory, skills, half the augmentations, interesting characters, etc. The load times are terrible, universal ammo sucks, every single facet of this game has been perverted so that more slack-jawed x-box gamers would slap down the money for a generic sci-fi shooter. It is probably the most disappointing sequel of all time.

Deus Ex: Invisible War was playable, but it was literally dumbed down from one of the best games of all time (Deus Ex) into an average, mediocre storyline-based shooter.
Other bad sequels?
Age of Empires 3 was atrocious; such bad gameplay that you didn't even hear people talking about it more than a week after it was released.

I do disagree...I think Civ 3 is the best.
However I think Civ IV wasn't as good as it should of been. They tried to make the game "accessable" but instead just made it shallow. ------

Beyond Divinity
This game is a sequel to the game Divine Divinity.
They arranged for two changes into the sequel, which i found very annoying. The player now could zoom in and out, and also, the player now had to advance 2 characters at the same time.

DeusEx 2 wasn't that bad. it was just a bit mediocre.
for unremitting ****, try some of the expansion packs released for games like C&C and Syndicate. I can imagine the meetings that led to their conception...
exec a : "It seems the popularity of our game is dropping off. most people have finished it, should we look at developing a fully fledged sequel building on the feedback we've received?"
exec b : "nah, lets just bundle a couple of the maps we didn't use, make it impossibly hard and flog it to the poor saps. Now lets get back to snorting coke off this thai girl's thighs."

I know this will sound controversial but anyway... Elder Scrolls: Oblivion.
All the distinctive graphical design style of Morrowind replaced with bland and boring generic-fantasy cliches... Fully "scaling" monsters/loot so that at same bandits that wear leather armor at early game are using full Daedric armor at late game... Incredible super map system (which must be linked to orbital spy satellites) that reveals all interesting/hidden locations from long distance away, even if there is a mountain range in-between. Not a bad game, just utterly dumbed-down compared to Morrowind I think.

Edited by: Frug on 21/08/2007 09:11:04 Deus Ex was indeed one of the most disappointing sequels ever for all the reasons mentioned above.
I hated Oblivion just as much. Morrowind was gold, and Oblivion was supposed to build on that gold to make it even more amazing. Instead they fudged it in a number of ways that bugged me too much to play beyond a few levels. They took a massive sandbox game and made it so that the whole map levels up in difficulty with your character. The map was far less interesting, as was the overall plot. I was sad that it was able to bore me out of playing it.
Edit: I wrote this without reading the post above me. I can't believe Drazys stole my rant. Most people don't agree! But a lot of people hated morrowind too.

Truth is MOO3 is so hands down the worst over done sequel of all time. However I must say one of the most disappointing ones for me was Battlezone II. I was one of the few who bought the first one. The timing of the release for the first one doomed it so they re-invented themselves for the sequel. And like most re-inventions, it sucked.

What I mean is they made it so that the game was shorter...which I think ruined it. Even the "Epic" game wasn't as long as a standard game in Civ III. ------

KOTOR2 was released as an unfinished game. But it is both storywise and mechanic wise superior to KOTOR1, it doesn't suck by far. Oblivion is a great game after you mod it enough.. but I agree too, normal Oblivion is just bad. all it has going for it over Morrowind is the oh-so-pretty enviroment engine.

Compared to NWN1 simply a load of bull with better graphics. They only wanted to make money on the name not on the game. Despicable!
What I also find pretty crappy is Fallout Tactics. Not as bad as NWN2 but still disappointing compared to Fallout 1 and 2. |

Edit: Oh and I have to agree with Civ 4 being a terrible sequel... Worst UI ever, slow and unresponsive (like Jita 4-4), terrible effects and really bad wonder-videos... compared to previous Civs or true masterpieces such as Alpha Centauri (which is pretty much the best offline game ever) it was also a total load of crap and not worth buying.

Edited by: Deviana Sevidon on 21/08/2007 11:53:55 Neverwinter Nights 2 was overall a good game. It just seems that Obsidian has not the same talent s Bioware has, in creating interesting characters. Also I heard the voice acting was bad in the english version. I cannot really compare it, since I have the german version and there the voice acting is quite good. Quara has the same sweet voice than Imoen had in Baldurs Gate 2. The story is also better than the NWN 1 Original Campaign, but not as good as in the expansion packs.
Master of Orion 3 was for me one of the greatest dissapointments. Graphics are just plain ugly and the strategic part, leaves you with a feeling, that your actions have nearly no effect. The final straw were the balancing problems, the game made some races totally overpowered (Izkul) and others so gimped, that they were nearly unplayable (Humans).
Dark Sun 2; Wake of the Ravager: The first Dark Sun had a nice RP in a very harsh fantasy setting (Desert World, struggle for survival and brutal oppression in the last human citys) The second part of the series, had lots of gamebreaking bugs and the only good graphics were those which were recycled from Dark Sun 1.

The only Myst game I don't really like is URU : Ages beyond Myst. And the only reason for that is that there is too much hopping back and forth between the different levels - if you're in an area that you're unable to complete, there is no way to know whether it's because of something you need to solve in that world or something in a completely different world, which sucks tbh.
Some aspects of Riven ("Myst 2") were a bit too difficult, I can agree with that. Also, Myst III was too easy. Myst IV seems to be too easy so far, but I tend to reinstall the os every now and then resulting in me being unable to get very far in it. I've bought Myst V, but I haven't played it yet (planning to after finishing Myst IV).

Before I even entered the thread, Deus Ex: IW screamed ahead to the top of the my list. Glad to see it isn't just me then!
Most in my list belong to my Amiga days. I remember the first time I was every disappointed in a game I was looking forward too. Turrican3; I played the first two games to destruction and loved them both. The 3rd was a stinky pile o crap. All R-Type games after 2 could be labelled the same way.
