After a long summer vacation we're back with the Live Dev Blogs! First out is QA who will answer all your questions about Quality Assurance and what it is they do.
To participate in the Live Dev Blog you have to have EVE Voice active and join the in-game channel "Live Dev Blog". If you can't make it we will provide a downloadable copy of the chat on Friday and as soon as we can we will also add a transcript.
This is the questions thread, please do not discuss the Live Dev Blog here, just post your questions for the Devs!

1) How do yuo perform Functional Testing of the client, is this all done manually or have you got some automation tools to perform this task?
2) In regards to both Functional and Non-Functional testing have you got a core set of scenarios that you have compiled? and if so how was this determined, data mining on SQL transactions or some other way?
3) How do you envisage and how do you Performance test, is this against a realistic environment similar to TQ or a cut down verion? Do you use nodes with 1 system on them or more like TQ with 2 or more systems per node?
4) What Non-Functional and Functional Testing software do you currently use? i.e. Winrunner for functional, or QALoad for Non-Functional??
5) IN what way are you performing your analysis of the core scenarios you have? Are you looking at the core transaction times alongside memory and cpu usage?
I'm sure i have more Q's but I'll edit later. -------------

Considering the complete and utter lack of support by the Contract system for selling the following:
1) Shares Commonly used for IPO's, including stocks and bonds.
2) Services (Services sell based on customer feedback, pricing history, discussion of Service details. Service sales should support this.)
How can CCP justify removing the buy and sell forums in light of the (in my opinion) significant lack of Contract functionality for Shares and Services.

i'm sorry, but who exactly do i direct my hate towards -- who made the decision to shut down the buy/sell forums, because by so doing, you're forcing me to publicly agree with dark shikari.
why was this horrid decision made? i mean, all the people making the decisions play the game, right? that IS what we've been told all these months.
so based upon that, do the people running/playing the game NEVER use the buy/sell forums? if so, they must be in the 1% minority.
so my question is, well, what the ****? |

First question that I have for the QA department is regarding the Known Issues page. This often seems to lag behind actual known issues and I was wondering what the current process is for updating this page and what plans you have for improving this page?
Second, I noticed that with regards to Rev 2.2, the Dev team seems to have been more open about balancing efforts. I have been happy to see that much of the feedback from the community has been used to refine this patch prior to its release. Is this a trend that we can continue to expect? If so, what can we do as a community to help?
Thirdly, regarding invention, currently this seems to be quite a blackbox. I have read much speculation on the possiblity that parts of it (specificly when skills are trained to level 5) might be broken. Given that there is limited feedback from the interface regarding the success rate of invention jobs. What can we do as a community to assist with testing to make sure that this is in fact working as intended? Especially since we have no real information on what the intended behavior is.
Lastly, I would like to voice the same concern that many in the community have regarding the recent news item:
Originally by: Dark Shikari Q: Considering the huge list in this thread of features that Contracts is sorely lacking, including the complete lack of ability to advertise services of any sort, why in god's name are you deleting the trade forums?
I don't see this as material for the live dev blog, but I would like to add another request that you please address the concerns of the community with some further explination or comments in that announcement's official thread.

Given the fact that eve have worked with the trade-forums basicly since launch, in that time certain "standards" have been put in place. Stuff like sniper-rules in auctions and general terms as to how to handle trades (especialy auctions).
How did the current revision of the contracts get though QA without mirroring the functions/features that the members of the eve community have established over the years ?

How is the social system doing? Are Animations looking good? Do you know this new dynamic animation system that Indiana Jones IV is going to use? Verrry cool. Will it look like that?
And .. hmm.. what's exactly going to be in the next major upgrade? Specifically concerning the 3d engine upgrade? Details plz..
and something for the future: how about flying in planet's atmosphere? or land on planets? are planets going to get some love in the near future? even if they are not "interactivly" used, will you enhance them a little, like detailing the surface animations? are there plans to make Eve's space more "space-like"? It's fantastic how light effects are used (e.g. lens flare), will there be more of it?

After reading tsome previous dev blogs on the forums i ran across the Khanid-2 update and realized that the Curse (Recon ship) was not in this list. Question (1) is how will this ship change with not only the Khanid updates but with the Nosferatu nurf which is being planned for a later release since this ship relys heavily on Nos and Nutes.
Question (2) also regarding the Nosferatu. Specifically for Amarr that rely so heavily on capacitor regen to fire their lasers. I am abrade this nurf will hit them to the point people will stop playing Amarr because ther is no way to regulate the capacitor usage of energy turrets. Whats your views on this subject?
(3) when will the Medium and Large Tractor beams be released now that th Capital Tractor beam is being implemented for the Capital industrial ship?

Now that the Khanid changes are going to make the Heretic a more focused and useful ship and the Flycatcher is getting a buff to CPU and Grid to help it maintain its usefulness, is there any chance that the Eris will ever get some love? It was bad enough having the poorest slot arrangement and a split high slot arrangement and pretty much no way to tank and tackle at the same time without being too slow to tackle anything that you might be able to tank, but now the two that were still able to laugh at the Eris before are so far ahead that the hilarity is waning. Trying real hard not to mention that other interdictor that everyone uses for their example when they whine about how overpowered they are and beg for them to be nerfed...

1. Is the current cloaking bs epidemic viewed as a problem to be solved or "working as indended"; by this I am referring to the tendency of every npc'er in 0.0 to fit one and therefore be invulnerable within a couple of seconds of anyone else entering the system. If it is a problem, do you have any ideas as to how to ameliorate it?
2. It was mentioned that the Apocalypse would be getting a new, more defined role, any new on this front?
3. What is your view on the oft-repeated "beams use too much powergrid"?
4. What is the current status of the planetary interaction ideas? A while back basic planetary interaction seemed imminent (with footage of planetary flight at a fanfest etc) but has since faded into the background only to be over-taken by ambulation. Is it still in the pipeline and being developed? Is it in the bin? etc..
5. Has the introduction of Capital Salvagers with increased range been considered for the rorqual?
6. What is your view on the current state of titans? Since the nerf they have seen very little use except for one or two instances (one of which being a semi-kamikaze piloting error) since they can be held in place by a ship costing 10-20mil and can no longer project their firepower remotely. While I think it's safe to say most people agree that something needed to be done to bring them onto the battlefield more and reduce their "Hi...BOOM...Bye" factor; do you feel that perhaps you went too far? If so, any plans for super-cap changes?
7. Comets....looked insteresting way back when, failed to materialise, no mention for ages; still planned? Scrapped? Any info?
8. Complex Fullerene Shards: Please spill the beans. What were they going to be used for when you told us to hang onto them so long ago? Will they ever be used for anything? Been niggling at my mind for so long...
9. T2 BS; any ideas that don't include heat as an intergral part?
10. Does this moustache make me look like I should join the MGRL?

1) Given the recent annoucement regarding the situation of the AURORA team, how do CCP plan to run ingame events and ensuring the continued forward progress of the game's backstory in the immediate future?
2) There has been a lot of concern shown from the RP community regarding the lack of advancement in some very important ARCs such as the Amarr sucession, which are potentially gamebreaking on in character terms for those who choose to support the intended factions.
What is CCP's intention long term with regards to providing a stable and flowing RP background for those who choose to roleplay?
3) With the effective disbandment of the AURORA team coming around in future, will we see a more generalised scope of RP based events in future rather than a focus on the four main factions, which at some point has left pirate factions and the minor sovereign entities such as the Khanid Kingdom and Ammatar Mandate in the shade?
4) Also with regards to future RP, is there any plan to cater for those people whom choose not to allign themselves to a Faction? The lack of support for this has been highlighted and seen most prominently with the prizes offered for the Fourth Alliance Tournament. In effect the question is; are there any plans to encourage more dynamic RP within the Eve community?

My Question to the devs is:
When you click jump whilst at a stargate you will get a message along the lines of 'Session Change' however this does not guarantee that you have successfully initiated a jumpout
For example you are moving fast you hit a stargate - hit the jump button and you get session change message, you then bounce off the gate and out of jump range, the jump then doesnt actually happen - you do not change systems, is this a bug? if so the session change message should not show unless you are actually having a session change.
if you bounce out of range of a stargate once you have initiated the jump (clicked the jump button) surely you should still jump out regardless of where you ship moves too after that button is pressed? Is this the way it is intended to work and if so are there any intentions to fix this so that it works correctly. ----------------------------------------------- Great minds think alike but fools seldom differ

1) The dev blog stated that the Triage Module makes you immune to EW. Those who tested it on the test server found out it does not protect you. With the current trend of using a high amount of dampening vs any carrier will this feature be correctly implemented?
2) What are the plans with regards to blob lag?
3) With regards to blob lag, is a limit to the amount of people in a system something that is looked at as an option?
4) What is the status of the possible WoD (World of Darkness) MMO that was hinted at after the merger with White Wolf? (I know, not an Eve question, but I couldn't resist to ask)

Edited by: Nate D on 22/08/2007 23:13:05 Around when can we expect to see Rev 3 hit Sisi?
I like that a lot of the bug reporting stuff has been opened up to the public where only the person who reported the bug can see it. However would it be possible to take that one step further and open up a list of things that have been confirmed at bugs (that are not exploits), the stuff the devs are currently working on, and fixes that should be in place to everyone who is an EVE member? I think this would solve a lot of the "CCP's not listening to us threads" and I'm sure CCP has some sort of internal list of things that need to be worked on.
What about statistics for bug reporting somewhere on the EVE-O site? Number of bugs (reported, confirmed, fixed) in the last (week, month, year, forever)
Would CCP ever consider taking steps to make EVE Open Source? (not really a QA question)
Could CCP implement a way for accounts on sisi NOT to expire if they've been payed for in the last 6 months or so?
Edit 1: Is any work being done to make EVE a bit more lifelike? Rotating planets, orbits, flying manually to another system puts you into that system?
Can't think of anything else. -Nate

Edited by: BH Eliohann on 23/08/2007 06:45:33 at 1st: thank you for not shutting us down and now some questions:
1. a) what over improvements are to be expected for the BR-section for players? i think most appreciate the new system due to it's increase in communication between the BHs and the players. b) will there be a push to increase the cmunication even more? (out-dated known issues, testing, in development sections)
2. if you are familiar with the capability-maturity-model, at what stage do you see the development process at CCP?
3. what kind of tests are performed before the code hits Sisi or any other server for that matter (unit test etc.)?
4. are these tests defined before the coding starts?
5. a) what methods are used to calculate the time plan for development projects? b) how accurate have they been in the past? c) how many time (in %) is reserved for QA in each process? do these times fluctuate?
all other questions would violate the NDA, but i can poke you on IRC keep up the good work!

The recent dev blog stated that the trade channels will be closed in the future and thus all trade will move ingame. How do the developers plan to have the contract system support, for example,
- Supercapital trading - Research services - Share trading - POS fueling services ... and in general, offering of OOB (out of the box) ideas which make EVE trading very real-world like?
Will there be a devblog stating on how the contract system will be developed and when this might happen? How long will the developers give the playerbase time to react and move to a 3rd party siten should the trade forums be shut down?
And, in general, what is the reason behind closing the well-working and widely used trade channels on the EVE-O forums?

2. Something I have always been interested in knowing is how much of an impact does the Bug Hunting team affect the overall QA process.

After seeing some of the responses with the new bug report system, it seems like the bugs that only happen occasionally tend to bounce back with "sorry, can't reproduce it". Even if logs and screenshots etc are included,, and even if there is a thread about it with other ppl who have the same issue (which was linked in the bug reports) they are not attached to a defect. Does this mean that CCP knows that there is a problem, and doesn't intend to fix it? If so, why not? (Examples : Item duplication on the overview, wrong color on stuff in the overview)
