Hi all!
Am I the only one around here missing the simplicity of some of the older games out there, or perhaps just don't find the newer games as good as the old ones?
Anyway, here's a little list of old games I find really good.
* MAX (Mechanized Assault and Exploration)
This game is buggy as hell, but it's a really good play, especially in multi-mode. So far I haven't found any game that measures up to this when it comes to strategy.
* Fragile Alliance
Somewhat similar to Master of Orion (don't know which came first though), another excellent multi-game, not better than Master of orion, but different and according to me; better.
* Descent (1&2)
The best "FPS" as far as I'm concerned. Not as fast as Quake and some of the others where you play a person running around, but if you put some effort in learning the game mechanics... WOW!
* Giana Sisters
A Mario-clone for C64, that I find better than the original Mario-games. More power-ups, and simply funnier.
* Dungeon of Doom
A Mac-game for the earliest macs. Basically you are a small stick figure running around in a maze of squares meeting more and more monsters. Not a "good" game, but very entertaining
* Escape Velocity
Another mac-game. Think EVE in 2D and you have it.
I won't clutter up this topic with more games I like, time for you to tell me which old games You like!

Edited by: Mardonius on 21/08/2007 17:10:16 Don't know how old we're talking here but these games have been around long enough for me to consider them old. God knows how many times I've completed them, but I've completed all of them at least three times, after that I lost count.
Quake I & II Always good for a bit of carnage.
Deus Ex I'd always replay it roleplaying with different goals and a different ending in mind. Pity the sequel sucked s**t through a straw.
System Shock II In terms of immersion and story you just can't beat it. Unless of course, the game is BioShock.
Grim Fandango Just brilliant. If you're looking for something as good and as wacky I'd strongly recommend Psychonauts. |

Hmm... I played it on XP not that long ago, even played multi over the internet via a VPN-tunnel (or similar don't remember what we used) IIRC the trick is to have the win98 release of the game (could be win95) and not the pure dos version, and then run doxbox (think we used v0,63) and as usual fiddle with the .cfg until it works.
Send me a mail ingame and perhaps I can help you...

A special mention to more recent classics
Unreal Quake (groundbreaking and also made me fail college) Thief Max Payne BaldursGate 1+2 Planetscape Torment (still the best storyline in any RPG?) Deus Ex System Shock 2
Also, anyone remember the text based adventure games from the 80's...you know the ones you had to type "NE" to go northeast...ususally into a clearing full of monsters. The great grandaddies of current RPG.

Actually I *think* I got it working, my main problem is that I suck with dosbox =P. But anyway on topic another of my favorite old games is transport tycoon, and it's revitalization, OpenTTD.

You have an excellent taste in games. MAX has the brutality of Red Alert combined with the detailed strategic scope of Civilization. Hardcore game , and the AI isn't half bad too !
A tactical game I like is Cyberstorm. Very involving , and with nice multiplayer modes for a turn based game.

Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES)
Still the best Mario game ever in my opinion.
Colony Wars 1 & 2
Great Story. Great Gameplay. Multiple story arcs. One of the few games where you can fail every mission and still beat the game, albeit with a "bad" ending.
Mortal Kombat
Such great childhood memories. My mom refused to buy it for me, so I played it at a friends house. Such an awsomely violent game.
Civilization II
It was well into the PS2 era when a friend introduced me to this little gem. I think I spent 12 hours solid playing it the first time I tried. I actually got conquered by the Mongols in that first game.

Oh man, would have to go with heroes of might and magic series...3 being the best.
There was also this RTS that came out after warcraft that was a blast to play. You had a hero that could be an excellent fighter or mage and you gained skill as you won battles. That hero was basically the general of whatever race you commanded. I had the undead skelly and everytime you gave him a command, he would say **** like "Lock up your children!" I used to gamespy with that game every night...******* blast! I think it was called warlords or something.

Edited by: Mekroig on 22/08/2007 00:42:22 Mario Brothers Pick any of the ones for NES or SNES great fun for a while. With a buddy it's even more fun. Me and my roommate last year played the 1st one on NES a ton... heck one time, in some amazing stroke of luck, I beat the game start to finish without ever being hit or dying. I ended up killing world 8 bowser with the very first flower you can find.
Zelda Again pick any of them. My favorites are 1 and 3.
Contra Yup... again... pick any of them for the SNES or NES. 1 2 and 3 are great.
Civilizations Any of them, you can't really miss with one of these.
Sim City I like Sim City 2000 the best personally.
StarCraft Duh.
Pirates! Couldl be old or new depending on point of view... still great fun.
Uncharted Waters 2 Best sailing game ever.
Street Fighter 2 Put it in and beat the crap out of a buddy.
EDIT:
AAAACK! forgot the best pc game ive ever played...

YES! Awesome game, I would really really like a new remake of this, this game ******* rocked.
If you wanna play it on PC, download the disk image from an amiga fansite (I used http://www.back2roots.org but it may be shut down from disuse), and run it on WinUAE (free Amiga emulator).
It's designed to run on the ECS13 chipset. You'll have to look up the specs for that to configure WinUAE if it isn't a preset.
Fragile Allegiance - K240 is an old PC remake of the game, with updated graphics and more gameplay options.
Both of these games are abandonware, so it's completely legal to download them. -----------

I've noticed Steam have all the older Quake games so I bought them about an hour or so ago. I've forgotten how brown Quake 1 was, but still a great game and the very first genuine 3D game.
Oh yeah, and Fallout 1 and 2, and the original Baldur's Gate. I couldn't get into Baldur's Gate 2. Too many dungeons and you weren't allowed to explore the great outdoors like you could in the original BG.

Maniac Mansion Zak McKracken and the alien mindbenders Monkey Island series Sam & Max (original) Ultima 6 & Ultima 7 w/addon M.U.D.S (fantasy american football game, quite violent ^^)
Fallout 1&2 Syndicate Theme Park Operation Flashpoint (not THAT old but meh, still ace) Populous Dungeon Keeper Pirates Sensible Soccer series
Can't think of more off the top of my head, I think I may have forgotten a few, but those in my list are definitely the games I have the fondest memories of. __________

Sweet christ, I thought I was the only one on earth who'd ever played that. Any tips on getting it to work on XP? all my attempts have been futile, even with dosbox it crashes.

i got stuck in the first policequest game for, like, 2 years.
i got to the bit where you had to rescue sweetcheeks marie from prison, and despite trying every possible way i could imagine of asking her to come on the undercover operation, i just couldn't figure it out.
for the record, the correct input was "will you help the operation".

Chrono-Trigger
Classic! I loved the fact that I could travel back and forth through time, do whatever I wished, and have that action echo in later years. It had a central plot and story line, but you could stray from that and do smaller sidequests.

Originally by: Sharupak There was also this RTS that came out after warcraft that was a blast to play.
There's a turn-based strategy game similar to this on the Saturn called Dragon Force. It possesses the incredible awesome. Beat it twice over a weekend by playing 12 hours + a day.

Supremacy - wonderful strategy game. Simple, yet immersive.
X-COM - The first game of the series is the best turn based tactical games ever made. Period. The sequels are not that good though, imo.
Fantasy General - Excellent game.
Master of Orion 2 - I still recall the sleepless nights. "Just one more turn, just one more turn...", and the sun rose.
Subtitans - It has it's flaws, but yet VERY fun.
Chaos Overlords - It is a very simplicistic game, yet at the same time it is very deep and fun.
Fallen Haven - Nice, nice. feartured a nice, non-linear campaign map.
Privateer - very nice memories.
Missionforce Cyberstorm - very entertaining.
Mechwarrior 2 - Awesome mission design, excellent music and atmosphere.
Starcraft - no need to elaborate I think.
Homeworld - Nothing short of a masterpiece.

M.A.X. The OP reminded me of it's existence... I almost forgot about this brilliant game. Brilliant turn based strategy.
Mega Race 2 The cutscenes sometimes took longer than the game itself - But it's just so ridiculous that it's fun! Lance Boyle forever!
Reunion Think Imperium Galactica, Pax Imperia 2 and all that - But older. The only game that no one has ever finished, because it was way too difficult at a certain stage :P
MDK One of the best games ever made. The original was simply mindblowing. I still have to find a game that was this well-thought out and ridiculous at the same time...
More to come, maybe :)

EA just bought the license off the Collier brothers, who in turn kept the database and turned it into Football Manager, which is way better than the new Champo.

Even some more. I enjoyed most of them on the C64. Among the games that are a bit younger and for a long time my favorites were: Master of Orion ll Master of Magic X-Com Apocalypse Wing Commander Series Tie-Fighter
I really wish there would be another Space-Sim.*****pit-View, Tactical Missions, Dramatic-Storyline. But the genre is pretty dead. But no big game developer wants to touch this type of games right now.

Edited by: New Dice on 28/08/2007 04:01:05 ok, without borking on about OPH THE OLD TIMEZ!!11 here it is...
Dune 2 the battle for arrrrrakis (mega drive version) Back when I was just a little kid it introduced me to the world of RTS, perhaps my favourite game ever, actually. Had kick ass techno dirges too.
Cannon Fodder on the amiga 600, and Syndicate Wars...good times.
Mario Kart on the SNES or 64, both fantastic, good times again.
Sonic The hedgehog, master system. first game i ever played, good times.
Command and Conquer Red Alert + Doom (95), most popular games at secondary school and, for my lack of never doing any school work utterly owned at them. A lot of fun.
Virtua Cop, great fun at the arcades playing two at once trying to impress my mates, and sucking every time.
Gran Turismo, PS, lots of fun playing against my mom :P
Half Life 2, first game I played after a long break, reminded me how good a game can be.
There are other games in this thread I also like, R-Type (hard as hell), Streetfighter, mortal kombat, etc, etc....People have some good taste ;oP
an MMO will never touch this list as these are games not life wasting programs based on ****.
Eve gets me excited at times, not sure right now if it's for the right or wrong reasons. I pay my first months subs in a week, subs to play a game...ugh, this game better be worth it.
