Hi all!
Am I the only one around here missing the simplicity of some of the older games out there, or perhaps just don't find the newer games as good as the old ones?
Anyway, here's a little list of old games I find really good.
* MAX (Mechanized Assault and Exploration)
This game is buggy as hell, but it's a really good play, especially in multi-mode. So far I haven't found any game that measures up to this when it comes to strategy.
* Fragile Alliance
Somewhat similar to Master of Orion (don't know which came first though), another excellent multi-game, not better than Master of orion, but different and according to me; better.
* Descent (1&2)
The best "FPS" as far as I'm concerned. Not as fast as Quake and some of the others where you play a person running around, but if you put some effort in learning the game mechanics... WOW!
* Giana Sisters
A Mario-clone for C64, that I find better than the original Mario-games. More power-ups, and simply funnier.
* Dungeon of Doom
A Mac-game for the earliest macs. Basically you are a small stick figure running around in a maze of squares meeting more and more monsters. Not a "good" game, but very entertaining
* Escape Velocity
Another mac-game. Think EVE in 2D and you have it.
I won't clutter up this topic with more games I like, time for you to tell me which old games You like!

Edited by: Mardonius on 21/08/2007 17:10:16 Don't know how old we're talking here but these games have been around long enough for me to consider them old. God knows how many times I've completed them, but I've completed all of them at least three times, after that I lost count.
Quake I & II Always good for a bit of carnage.
Deus Ex I'd always replay it roleplaying with different goals and a different ending in mind. Pity the sequel sucked s**t through a straw.
System Shock II In terms of immersion and story you just can't beat it. Unless of course, the game is BioShock.
Grim Fandango Just brilliant. If you're looking for something as good and as wacky I'd strongly recommend Psychonauts. |

Sweet christ, I thought I was the only one on earth who'd ever played that. Any tips on getting it to work on XP? all my attempts have been futile, even with dosbox it crashes.

Hmm... I played it on XP not that long ago, even played multi over the internet via a VPN-tunnel (or similar don't remember what we used) IIRC the trick is to have the win98 release of the game (could be win95) and not the pure dos version, and then run doxbox (think we used v0,63) and as usual fiddle with the .cfg until it works.
Send me a mail ingame and perhaps I can help you...

Jet Set Willy Attic Attack Knightmare Rebel Raiders (anyone remember this little gem on spectrum?) Populous Civilization 1 Dungeon Master Ultima Series Ultima Underworld Cannon Fodder UMS (turn based military thingy) Meglomaniac Star Trek Birth of the Federation (turn based 2d strategy doodar)
A special mention to more recent classics
Unreal Quake (groundbreaking and also made me fail college) Thief Max Payne BaldursGate 1+2 Planetscape Torment (still the best storyline in any RPG?) Deus Ex System Shock 2
Also, anyone remember the text based adventure games from the 80's...you know the ones you had to type "NE" to go northeast...ususally into a clearing full of monsters. The great grandaddies of current RPG.
I have a tear in my eye remembering this stuff *sniffle*

Actually I *think* I got it working, my main problem is that I suck with dosbox =P. But anyway on topic another of my favorite old games is transport tycoon, and it's revitalization, OpenTTD.

You have an excellent taste in games. MAX has the brutality of Red Alert combined with the detailed strategic scope of Civilization. Hardcore game , and the AI isn't half bad too !
A tactical game I like is Cyberstorm. Very involving , and with nice multiplayer modes for a turn based game.

Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES)
Still the best Mario game ever in my opinion.
Colony Wars 1 & 2
Great Story. Great Gameplay. Multiple story arcs. One of the few games where you can fail every mission and still beat the game, albeit with a "bad" ending.
Mortal Kombat
Such great childhood memories. My mom refused to buy it for me, so I played it at a friends house. Such an awsomely violent game.
Civilization II
It was well into the PS2 era when a friend introduced me to this little gem. I think I spent 12 hours solid playing it the first time I tried. I actually got conquered by the Mongols in that first game.

Oh man, would have to go with heroes of might and magic series...3 being the best.
There was also this RTS that came out after warcraft that was a blast to play. You had a hero that could be an excellent fighter or mage and you gained skill as you won battles. That hero was basically the general of whatever race you commanded. I had the undead skelly and everytime you gave him a command, he would say **** like "Lock up your children!" I used to gamespy with that game every night...******* blast! I think it was called warlords or something.

I actually like Wolfenstien to the original Doom, but the later dooms and quakes and halflifes definately took it to a whole new level. _______________________________________________ RuntimeError: ChainEvent is blocking by design, but you're block trapped.
