Although I recognize that being able to move a drone from cargo to drone bay quickly in space would be a major balance problem. I think the other issue is that drone ships far from home that lose their drones end up having no damage left at all. Therefore I tried to think of a middle ground solution that wouldn't upset PVP balance but would allow drone ships to equip when there is no docking available.
The idea is that you should be able to move a drone from your cargo to your drone bay while in space. The catch is that this would work exactly like onlining a module in space. It would require you have 95% capacitor available and the movement would take half that cap away. In addition, during the movement process the drone ship would not be able to target anyone and they must have all of their drones in the bay, any drones in space would have to be pulled in to make the move. The move would allow only one drone at a time to be moved and finally the user couldn't do anything if under hostile fire.
The idea is that the drone user would not be able to change in combat at all but they would be able to do it at a safe spot with some time and patience.

That bit is very interesting any would indeed make this pretty much impossible to abuse. Therefore I happily agree with the suggestion.

Well there is one vote in favor.

fair idea but it will most likely help pve not pvp. either way ccp would prefer if we'd stop using drones (lag-wise), so no love there...

It would have my vote. Of course, I got lazy and let my drones take out the guys close to me today and the ones over 100km away were not targeting anything.
Well, I suddenly realized that a ship 75 KM was just blown up and pulled them back and headed towards them to speed up the pickup. but, 2 were lost.... ... ha ha ph well. At that moment, I had this same idea... ha ha ha

Nah, get a starbase or carrier I can't replace my burnt out autocannons in space or switch to artilleries.
What most concerns me balance wise is ships without massive drone bays would be able to switch damage types or to some EW drone 'on the road'. Tracking a deimos and got kinetic drones? Just switch.
Knowing a target's drones in advance is often a factor in deciding to engage, particularly with smaller ships. I'd rather see changes which increase the benefit of advance intel like visible missile launcher models on ships. _

I was thinking of something along the same lines as reloading/changing ammo: It puts the weapon (ie: targeting) offline for 10 seconds while it switches out. The cap requirement to move the drones I think is also a nice balancing touch as it makes sure you wont be doing it in the middle of combat...maybe.
Who is the bigger carebear: The miner who braves lowsec on his own, or the "PvPer" who attacks an unarmed ship? I support the f |
