Greetings fellow pod pilots,
I have a question for your collective opinions that has been burning in the back of my mind for a while now. Throughout my travels in the EVE cluster, I have flown a great number of ships, and lost just about as many.
In all my flights, I find the most enjoyable to pilot are T1 Cruisers, particularly of Gallente manufacture. However, I have yet to have any success in creating a true fighting ship out of say, a Vexor or a Thorax. I enjoy their relatively low (replacement) cost, and that mid-way feeling between the agility of a frigate and the power of a battleship, but I don't know how to deck it out to take on either end of the spectrum.
Is there any hope for me in a Vexor? Are there any tips, hints, or tricks that you've picked up along the way to find luck in these lovable mid-size vessels? Any thoughts are welcome. Fly well out there.
Respectfully, Devon Vorberg Independent Pod Pilot

Hmm, I've had great success with "get your balls out, put them on the table, and hit f1-f5".

Edited by: ThaMa Gebir on 25/08/2007 05:56:15 Well there are a lot of variables you have to look at first to see whether you will have fun or die trying...
1; Skillpoints, yes true player skills (you sat behind the computer) go a long way to fitting a ship out cleverly. BUT, all those rl skills can't be good if you cannot use a certian gun or your ship tanks like a wet paper towel.
2; Play/Flight style, do you prefer to get up close in your face type or stand off, perhaps you prefer to fly in a gang or solo? It counts a lot to what you do and thus success rate.
To conclude I would say figure out what you like to fly most and how to fly it, to really make it work.
There are so many setups out there, but you can only decide for yourself what you like to fly or which setup suits you, I mean I knew a guy that loved to put rails on the thorax, I hated it, but it suited him and he really tore stuff up with it. ----------------------------

A good T1 Cruiser pilot in a well setup cruiser can beat any regular ship if that other pilot lacks the skills and has a poor fit
I once killed a raven with a AC Rupture because the raven had a really ******** fit (civvy sheild boosters and cargo expanders etc. ) Its all relative.
T1 frig and cruiser gangs can cause a lot of trouble for your foes with little finicial risk to you. . |

In short, yes. There's hope. T1 cruisers (can) be very effective.
Thorax, Vexor, Rupture are actually very effective ships, providing a useful amount of damage and speed, and not _totally_ made of tinfoil. I know many people who've used Thoraxes in combat, especially as it's faster and more maneuverable than the Diemost.
Remember though, a tech 2 fitting does approximately twice the damage of tech 1. That's a significant difference right there, and actaully a T2 fit on a cruiser is still not all that expensive. (unless you're looking at Caracals, for some reason T2 heavy missiles are really expensive a the moment).
I wouldn't recommend soloing in a Caldari cruiser - they lack firepower - but they're still fairly reasonable additions to a gang, because they can bring EW support (RSD caracal, and of course, the blackbird)
Thorax and Rupture are two really good choices. Vexor's pretty sweet too, to do the 'mini dominix' thing.

Vexors are the highest damaging, highest tanking ti cruisers in the game and will hump any other ti cruiser (bar the stabber which doesn't really matter when you can simply leg it) and will maul any thorax you meet however, it comes down to skills, but more importantly knowing what to do when, and how.

The only t1 cruiser I use anymore is the stabber aKa poor mans vaga. It is GREAT at baiting and tackling. I have lost a few of them while baiting/suicide tackling, but it is soo cheap to replace that the loot netted from our kills always is more than enough to cover it.
I have even found myself in situations where I should have lost the ship while I was holding some people down, but thanks to my superior speed/agility/my uberness ... I was able to survive long enough for help to finish them off.

This is what it comes down to, it's fun. I'm wary when i fly a hac into amamake, when it's a ti cruiser i don't think twice.

You can do a ton with a t1 cruiser if you know how to fit/fly it. I once 1v2'd an apoc and an eagle in my Thorax. I popped the apoc and then warped out in structure. With the right fit and skills, the thorax does a ton of damage for a cruiser.
The vexor is also good, but it often runs into cap problems. I recommend a vexor for someone with lower sp, and once you are much higher trained the dps of the thorax really outshines it in all realistic setups.
The celestis is great ewar and can be used solo if you know how to use it. I have used it to solo lots of cruiser/BC(except passive tanks), and a few BS.
