I was engaged by a 2 member gang in .4
I 10 seconds later attacked them back and the sentry guns opened fire on me and helped kill my command ship.
The sentries actually laid the final blow.
I was under the impression that if a gang attacks you the WHOLE gang is now open to being attacked back Without consequences from sentry guns.
I have a -7 sec status and am wondering if that is the reason this happened.

Nope, you can only shoot back at the ones that have engaged you. If it ain't flashing red, don't shoot it at a gate unless you can take the guns.

Sounds like you shot at someone that was not yet aggro'ed to you, unlucky.

Check your logs, only one of them probably attacked you, and you shot the one that didn't shoot you.

With a -7 sec status anyone can shoot you without sentries bothering them, and of course sentries will target you.

Wrong tbh, you can only shoot back at people who have agressed you, sounds like you shot one who hadn't attacked/assisted.
Rules are simple;
1. You are red so you shoot first > sentries attack you.
2. Someone shoots you first > you can return fire on ONLY the agressed person, that means red flashy flashy, not yellow targety targety. Otherwise sentries will obey rule 1.

No, hes right. After you reach -5 you're free game in front of both CONCORD and sentry guns
He's only half right. At -7 anyone can shoot you without sentries bothering them. However, you can shoot back without sentries targeting you. You can only, however, shoot at those who have agressed you, not their gang. This is why the OP got hit by the sentries.
