The title sadly says it all ... I begin to create a new character and the options are so many that I like to take my time and perfect the look, fool around with styles and lighting etc. I know that appearance matters little in the game but it is still fun for me.
I find that if I do take my time ... say over two minutes to create a character I can get to the naming screen and then when I check availability the game loses connection with the server and restarts.
Anyone have any idea how to get around this ?

I've heard of this before and while I have not seen a definitive answer it seems this is usually due to your hardware timing out. Essentially your router has an inactivity timeout that when it sees nothing happening for awhile will terminate the connection. You'd need to either loosen that timeout (seems a bit strict on your end) or you can move back and forth in the character creation process every few minutes to "renew" the connection (that would be annoying I know).
Not saying this is your problem. Just a suggestion you might look in to.

Edited by: Oriella Trikassi on 26/08/2007 12:47:04 Some ISPs disconnect inactive customers - mine certainly does. At busy times this can be after a few minutes. Eve used to do this itself in character creation, but IIRC this was fixed.
There are free 'keep alive' programmes out there that access a valid address every few minutes for you - mine asks internet clocks for the time! http://www.gregorybraun.com/StayLive.html --- Trikassi Enterprises, oiling the jumpgates of commerce without microbidding. |

I used to have this issue.
My simple workaround was to fiddle around until i found a look i like, then recreate it (quicker this time as i have decided what i want) after the timeout. |

Thank you all for your suggestions, I will test these out and see if I can resolve this issue. Thank you again.

While the server does not have an inactivity timeout once you are in game and the suggestions above will be good if you have problems at that stage, thereis an inactivity timeout at the character selection screen (which the character creation is a special part of).
Not sure how long the timer is, probably around 5min. The solution I have read (not tested) is switching back and forth between the char creation steps. That should supposedly reset the timer and allow you some more time to create your looks. ---------------------------------------- A Guide to Scan Probing in Revelations |

This occured to me as well. Best thing I can recomend you try is take a first pass, write down what you selected, when you go threw it again run threw the major stuff as you will have known what you want, that way you have more time for the image creation.
