Welcome to Black Mountain.
Black Mountain, or BM for short, is a long story that I'll be publishing in serial form on a biweekly basis. I expect it to end in April or May of 2008, after which we'll return to the usual type of solitary chronicles. The very first installment is called "On This Earth" and introduces its protagonist to a dangerous and alluring organization. The next installment comes out in two weeks' time, on Monday September 10.
BM has two main characters, one of whom is a good person and one of whom is not. In time, this may change. The story is about personal freedom, and doing good things for bad reasons, and doing bad things for good reasons, and how people handle trauma and setbacks. It is also about temptation, and power, and what might have happened if a known historical character had fallen for a famous temptation. And, since this is me writing, it is about blood and violence and ducklings. You heard me.
Be aware that BM's two main characters have already appeared in my chronicles, and I strongly recommend that you read " Post Mortem" before reading today's chronicle. For those of you who want to be fully prepared for the, you can also read " The Greatest Joke", which introduces BM's other main character.
It's been a strange and difficult story to write. I hope you enjoy it.

I assume the well dressed man we get to meet in this story is not the despaired and severely ill man we got to meet in The Greatest Joke? If he is he sure did undergo a tremendous transformation...to the readers eye at this moment though... I cannot wait to read the second installment as this opening piece has left me wanting...
One thing i do wonder though, did you plan on PM and TGJ to be the prologues for the main characters in BM or did it just happen to become this way? ________________________________________________ NOW COLLECTING ISD AND CCP AUTOGRAPHS please sign :) i want purrty colours :( It'll be worth something someday. -Rauth

The bewildered look on the inspector's face as his brains are flying across the room is classic.
However I would have depicted Alad as nonchalant, even bored. Dispassionately dispatching a police inspector in a crowded bar, in front of another officer no less, is a very powerful statement of control and aplomb.

It is a demonstration of the power that he has behind him as well as control. I am guessing that in eve the local police force is, well, kind of like a security guard is to us. If you are a member of a group that has access to its own fleet of starships and maybe even capsuleers, then killing a local cop is only a problem so long as you are on the colony or on the station. Once you make it back to your ship and undock you are as free as the wind. ----------------------------------

This is the kind of chronicle I like and I'm so happy that it's going to last for ages. It's the little nightmare-ball-in-the-box aspect that I like; for me this adds to the mythos of Eve in general and helps fill out the universe.
Just one thing though Abraxas - I am watching you! I need my fix of these and if you miss an instalment, if you're even a few hours late with one I'll....be very very upset and may have to write a strongly worded letter!
Anyway enough o' my pish - superb work yet again mate. If I was wearing a hat I would doff it to you, if knew what doffing was. Keep it up.

One thing that just niggled at me though, was the use of "rapprochement" intentional, or was the intended meaning more akin to "reproach"? Because if rapprochement was correct I didn't quite anticipate her trying to ingratiate herself in such a manner, but they're your characters so obviously you know best heh, just wondering if you clear that up though. Other than that, great chronicle.

While not having the least bit of interest in this thread and what it represents per se, it seems a good place to ask; to whom were you intending to appeal by using the graphic execution-style head shot to advertise your story?
Why bother to comment if I'm not interested, you ask? Because you subjected everyone who visits the EVE Online home page to this picture unwillingly and without warning. The artwork is very good, and therefore the impact is quite visceral. That may have been your goal, so yes, you may indeed infer that it worked and that I am a bit put off by it.
However, while hoping to attract an audience, it is not unfair to ask how many repelled with that graphic who might otherwise have been interested, unless your writing also appeals only to a small niche. If not, though, a different lure may serve you better.
Respectfully, Don Griffith |

Let me being by complimenting you on the eloquent and tasteful expression of your concern. I, admittedly neither the creator of the work in question nor whom to which your comment is addressed, posit that the image should be viewed in a different context. The image is not, as you intimate, an advertisement for the chronicle. It is a visual representation, an illustration if you will, of a pivotal event in the chronicle. The difference between the two is subtle but important.
Eve is a dark and brutal universe. The characters introduced to us through the backstory are flawed, fallible and controversial. They are so because they are human. This means that while dark and brutal, Eve is a fundamentally human universe. As such, there is no definition of good and evil. Remember, one Minmatar's oppressor is another Amarrian's embodiment of the divine. Good and evil are products of our, the player's, individual interpretations of the stories and characters.
The chronicles are not, therefore, statements, nor analyses, nor arguments. The chronicles are bits of information, snapshots from the Eve universe. Each one provides a little more insight with which we can formulate our own interpretations. What good does it do to advertise information? It would be a bit like trying to advertise history.
To more directly answer your question: the devs are intending to appeal to you with the graphic execution-style head shot. But not in an effort to attract attention; you are a captive audience, being that you yourself are part of the Eve story. They are appealing to you because they want you to react and think, exactly as you have. So by responding so eloquently to the image, you have demonstrated why the image exists in the first place.
For that, I thank you.

Nah, it's not that guy. We'll meet him in the next instalment, called "Inertial". Take note, though, that he wasn't severely physically ill as such. He's dying, certainly, but his illness will have no effect on his physical well-being until, well, it ends. "Inertial" goes into more detail on this.
As for planning it ... sort of. I always had plans for TGJ, but they were substantially different from what Black Mountain turned out to be. The next two stories, "Inertial" and "The Room", will basically retcon those plans and provide the reader with a different explanation for the mystical boxes. PM was a one-off, but the character was so popular that I decided to use her for something else. When I got the idea for Black Mountain, she was a perfect fit.
This is the problem with publishing something like TGJ and intending to write more about it later. When you finally get around to it - TGJ is a year old by now - you're a different person and a different writer, with all the change of style and interest and tone that this implies.
Originally by: CCP Morpheus Absolutely brilliant, now you'll have me hanging over your desk wanting previews every day! I'll make sure he doesn't get a vacation folks.
I wonder if I should tell him that the entire Black Mountain series is already available on CCP's private access...
Originally by: Pang Grohl Reread The Greatest Joke and Post Mortem. I have to say that those are two very different recruiting methods. It makes you wonder who are the good guys and who are the bad guys.
It does, yes. And that's not the last time in Black Mountain where you'll be wondering about that issue.
Originally by: BranBresil One thing that just niggled at me though, was the use of "rapprochement" intentional, or was the intended meaning more akin to "reproach"?
It was intentional, and a total brainfart at the same time. Thanks for pointing it out; I'll have it corrected right after I stop beating my head against the desk.
Originally by: Multi Point While not having the least bit of interest in this thread and what it represents per se...
My goodness. You sound exactly like the food critic in Ratatouille.
Big Pick has already given an excellent and detailed answer to this, but I'll add one more detail: The data I have on page access indicates that this piece has not only achieved the highest three-day number of reads of any story, ever, but that it has also acquired a high number of re-reads. In addition, the time each user is spending on the page corresponds to its reading time; so whatever else the picture did to its viewers' minds, it did not have a detrimental effect on their interest in the story itself. It appears that the "small niche" you mentioned is not the group of people attracted by the picture, but the few bodies who found it distasteful.

The funny thing about a postmodern world is that while it is based solely on the interpretation of the individual, the uniqueness of every individual's life experience makes no two interpretations the same. Thus, no one interpretation can, nor should, be considered more right than any other.
(That was a really smart-assed way of saying that everyone is entitled to their own damned views.)

(this is at a previous poster in this thread)-> I'm pretty sure, that as a capsuleer pilot, I could shoot one of the lift guards out of the blue on my way from my ship to my Corporation's private offices/lodgings (you know, the the guards that are meant to keep non pod pilots from getting up there), and say something completely false such as "he made sexual advances on me, and I felt threatened." I sincerely doubt there would be a serious investigation in the matter, and unless I was in Amarr, I'd probably just have to pay some kind of fine (what's a few million isk though? A new ship, a clone? you make me laugh impovershed serf working for 5isk/hour). So, yeah, the whole being able to kill tens of thousands with a single thought, or spare just as many with just as little . . . makes us . . . above? the "law." If I was in a more "lawless" portion of space (read no concord or well fitted navy to tell me that I don't get to do what I want) and I was forced to take the clone express back from a bar, you can bet your keester, that thantos, and grandma's life savings I'm going back and blowing up the whole colony in retaliation. They will know Wrath and Righteousness incarnate from my Holy Amarrian Lasers.
I agree that the picture was deeply disturbing. The whole killing people I can see, and have a connection with (even if it was only to see with my own eyes the person was alive and infact, human) is disturbing, much more so, than say pushing a little red button that will kill a notional 10 million (I'm sure it'd be much different for the "notional" 10 million people on the receiving end of that red button). I needed an explaination, and the story did a superb job.
GREAT WORK ABRAXAS. Would you please send me the ip address, and login information to the secure Eve network where you have the rest of the story hidden? It'll save me alot of money and time, over flying to iceland, and trying to locate the archive manually (I'm very bad at reading binary, or hex for that matter).
I particularly like how the non descript, yet well dressed man has a rutheless undertone to him. After the Atira figured out the ploy aimed at getting her attention, it kind of changes the game a bit . . . that poor bastard inspector did die, so this man is obviously willing to sacrifice anyone and everyone (except himself of course) for whatever his goals are.
I DEMAND to know more aobut "Shoeless Joe," the inspector who was so thoughtlessly killed by his employers (I bet he thought he was working for a legitimate company or some such, like ORE or CreoDon). You said yourself, that if enough people demand, you'll deliver. 1 and counting

Abraxas, this was simply great! Like watching first episode of a very good series, that you want to see the next episode right away.
Quote: He held up a glass of water. "Drink it." She took the glass and downed it before he had a chance to say anything else.
Quote: He pulled out a small box about the size of a fist and opened it. She looked at its contents and winced.
"What do you see?" he said.
Now you've got my attention, what was in that box? And what was in the water? And why people collapse because of those boxes? Damnit, can't wait until the next chrnicle. --- Visit in game for nice items links http://eve.interkam.pl/eveships

Very nice story, keep it up!
As far as the picture goes (as a comic fan): it is actually not distasteful - notice that the gore and blood are skilfully hidden behind the holo-screen, and not the focus of the picture.
Besides, this is a game where capsuleers destroy groups of ships with hundreds and thousands of crew on board - yet a graphic of a murder is somehow too much?
This game includes violence in its content (as do about 90% of all games in one form or another), and EVE stories and graphics are usually anything BUT graphic violence. So I guess this won't turn into a manga-style bloodbath any time in the future.
Waiting for the next one!

This was an excellent short. I can not however express enough that the use of 'basically' should be used as little as possible. To say ô..we are basically assembling a ***** team...ö removes the mood of a story line and will set the reader to think of it more as ammature writing. Overall though this was the only thing that threw a wrench into being pulled into your story. Consider also that while you covered the surrounding environments that we would be visiting in this story there was nothing that set this place apart. Where where we, why did we elect to go here, what list of bars did we have? These kinds of questions need answers to compound our mood of the story and envelope the reader more. The more detail that wafts into our visual mindset the more clear we can see. While a writer must refrain from inundating us with details they are needed to bring the story to a culminating point in which the reader can expect to receive there climax.

Edited by: Talia Tigerpaw on 24/09/2007 22:53:20 Personaly I did not enjoy the "headshot drawing" nor that of the "nude" restrained women in the chair. Not because I have something against dark art. But because I do not play Eve to be reminded about "real ongoing crimes", infact that is the last reason I play Eve. When I want to do that I go elswhere. My concern is mostly with the last drawing of the women.
I got friends that practice Falun Gong, and you do not have to be very smart to imagine how they see it. The women is near naked, most likely raped or sexualy mutilated. That is how they will see it because it will hit home. Plus the way she is restrained is also familiar.
Let me add that I think I speak for the few women actualy playing Eve, when I say that ****(yes word is even blocked out) is one thing the Eve Universe could do without in graphic content. But I gues this is a battle between those that want everything to be "realisticly human" to the extreme, and those that just want a great storyline(No I do not mean a childrens story) and a place to relax. Here I also speak about the *****stories in the pirat logs in game.
Last I want to say that yes you can consider this post political. But fact is that near 10% of Chinas population right now is outlawed and "free game"(undergoing same methods), so when you make this kind of art it is Political by default. To make it and then say we can not comment on that fact, would be highly hypocritical.

There's nothing wrong with your desire to read escape fiction. I deal with all sides of humanity, good and bad, and sometimes I write ugly things. I have no problem with anyone who doesn't want to read them.
However, I caution you not to assume - whether implicitly or not - that this kind of ugly fiction excuses or ignores real-world issues. Instead, you may want to consider what purpose I might have had in writing the execution scene that you refer to, and what that scene says about Draea and the people she works for. I even had the art altered; in the first version, the bound woman was dressed in moderately sexy clothing that barely contained an ample body, and I demanded that she be reduced to a terrified victim. There is a point to this, as there always is, and it's not to take things to extremes for their own sake.

I'm sorry you didn't enjoy it. I'm reading through this series right now, but suffice to say... you have to live with it. To put it in somewhat BS-sounding terminology, Fiction uses events that have not actually happened to reflect upon the human condition. To ignore darker aspects of reality is to rob us of the full range of what reality is like. And that's when things get dangerous. Sheltered individuals produces a poorer society, and one more prone to actual violence or other such darker behaviors of people.
As to your Falun Gong friends.. but before you ask CCP to discontinue fake artwork about a woman being bound, you should probably get them to stop producing the same too. It happens, yes. But they don't need to fake photographs of it. But that's enough politics. Back to arguing about if Serpentis or Guristas drop better stuff... ~~~
