Just curious, does anyone know when we can expect an overhaul of EVE's graphics engine?
I recall reading some stuff and even seeing new ship models...can we hope that a "new look" for EVE is in the near-ish future? Thx, Marlowe

It'll likely be at the end of this year, or early next year. It's the main upgrade for Revelations III.

Related to this.. does anyone know how taxing this update will be. I've got a (relatively) older computer and EVE runs beautifully on it now. And it looks great too... I'd hate to download this update and have it turn into a slide show like all the latest FPS games are.
Also, I'd like to think it won't change the look and feel of EVE, but rather just be a "tweak." Anyone have thoughts?

It would be very unfortunate if people who have been able to play perfectly well on older systems up until now suddenly can't run it anymore. I'd hope that there would be reasonable scaleability in the graphics so this doesn't happen, although haven't heard any details one way or the other...so I'd also be interested to find out

The "old" (read current) client will remain available. So if you can run EVE today you can run it when the update comes out. If you find the update is too much for your PC to handle you can continue to play just as you do today (no new eye candy...will look just like it does now).

Apparently the upgrade may actually run faster on some computers.. its less CPU dependent and takes fuller advantage of modern GPUs. I've got a 2.5GHz Athlon 64 and a Geforce 6800 - usually considered a decent setup for MMORPGs, but whether or not the 6800 will be considered a "modern GPU" in the eyes of the new EVE engine remains to be seen :)

Is it too late to say I prefer the old "dull" models?
Seriously though I would imagine that after a few days in space the old tubs would be pitted and scarred, not shiney alucans?

Shields would protect against that, and should you armor tank, armor reps would repair any damage done there. So theres no reason to have scratches, dints ,etc, when you've got shields and advanced armor repairers in a game set massively in the future :P

You're quite right, of course, but I'd like to see something like Affront scarhulls, from Iain M. Banks' Culture novel, "Excession". Basically, they're self-healing hulls that preserve the state of the top molecular layer, causing Affront vessels to display purely cosmetic "weapon scars" from their various engagements.
I always thought that would be a pretty cool thing to have on a self-healing ship

Certainly would be pretty cool, but really difficult in an online game like this.

It's not necessarily difficult to do - they'd probably just be decals overlaying the base texture - but the main problem would most likely be that the database resource required for 30,000 players to have even 2 'scar decals' would make it unworkable. And even it if were a viable option, cosmetic enhancements like that would sit so far down the Developer's priority list we'd most likely see it as a feature of Eve2

If I'm not mistaken, it'll be a setting to use the new features or not just as in Stalker where you can select DX8 graphics or DX9 graphics (dynamic lightning in that case).
I think there'll be no option to use the older models, but the heavier stuff (like HDR and such) I think can be deselected.

No, there will be 2 entirely different clients. The current which will not change, and the new one. You can download and play on whichever you like.

The update coming at the end of the year won't require DX10. It will require a video card with 9.0c support though. (shader 3.0 support specifically). The Vista enhanced client probably won't happen until the end of next year ('08).
