Anyone else using Creative Alchemy with Eve Online in Windows Vista systems with Creative X-Fi soundcard? This has been required to enable EAX/DirectSound 3D hardware acceleration in Vista systems.
Alchemy works by patching DirectSound3D calls to the OpenAL hardware layer. It requires copying two files into Eve Online folder (DSOUND.DLL and DSOUND.INI).
It is not possible anymore with the latest patch issued today 28.8.2007.
If Alchemy is in use and the above two files exists in the Eve Online directory Eve fails to start because it thinks the installation is corrupted with the following error:
"Your EVE client installation may have modified, damaged or corrupt files. Please re-install the game client. Extra files dsound.dll, dsound.ini, found in root:/bin/"
Eve won't start until the files are removed.
So eventually this causes that I can't play with Sound HW acceleration anymore.
Please, was this done on purpose? What can I do to fix it? I can't play with sound in software only mode because the sound is choppy as hell.

Wait the hardware acceleration is X-Fi? Like, that was in before this patch also right?

With SB Alchemy you could get HW Acceleration with XFi and Audigy cards under Vista.
Not anymore.

Yeah. Unfortunately it's the only way for us to get HW accelerated audio in Vista. Bummer.

I am in the same boat. No Hardware acceleration with new patch, had to delete those two files to get the client to run.

It's quite a surprise that this few people are complaining about this. :)
I'm sure this was an unplanned side effect of what CCP aimed with this fix. Hopefully they fix this soon or add NATIVE support for OpenAL which would be quite much better.

What I hate more is the popping noice I sometimes here when a soundclip ends (a short pop)... Definitely EVE related. Do you hear that CCP?
And please fix it that finally my avatar is shown please. I'm paying YOU money remember? Very ******* hard right? How many time must I create petitions in order for a minor thing to be corrected?

Not very knowledgeable in this are myself. But i have a SoundMax integrated audio on my motherboard (ASUS Striker Extreme nf680I), And I can't activate the hardware toggle either.
I this since the Integrated SoundMAx doesn't support hardware accel? or is it the same error as for the other brands mentioned? (I'm running Vista Ulitmate 64)

With a cheap Audigy card and Vista I'm fine for sound full screen, I only get what I assume you're getting with Eve windowed. That's OK as the only time I run windowed is when the carebear Excel spreadsheets are on screen in station.
I have Alchemy but it hadn't occurred to me to try it with Eve as Eve has no EAX, which is presumably why Creative don't list it. But put me down as a 'me too' anyway. I would suppose telling Eve that the two alchemy files are permitted in the bin folder shouldn't be beyond the powers of the Devs.

The fix for this problem is so simple.
They just have to add dsound.ini and dsound.dll as allowed to be in the folders.
Alchemy will do the rest.
And may I add the in game combat sounds are HORRIBLE now. So many missing explosions and laser fire.
Please CCP, just add those 2 files to be allowed and let us hear your game again.

there's advanced documentation for ALchemy that illustrates default settings for unsupported apps. you just create the dsound.ini file and copy the .dll to the system directory and it performs the same mojo as it does for supported apps :D
except..in EVE.

I sign to this thread. This problem with EAX, Vista and EVE-Online is very annoying. CCP, I hope you've readed this thread and older threads about this. And I hope too that in the near future you're going to solve this problem.
It would be paradox: Eve with DX10, but without EAX.

Bad news. They won't even listen. I filed a bug report last week and now it's processed. Here's their response:
Thank you for your bugreport - ID:43266 Title: Creative Alchemy, Windows Vista and latest patch (36191)
The problem you have described as an intended game feature, and not a bug.
I was like *wtf* when I read that. Thank you for disabling our Hardware accelerated Audio in Vista :(

I re-opened the bug report with more explanations why this is not a very good situation for us. Then I got a bit better response:
Thank you for your bugreport - ID:43266 Title: Creative Alchemy, Windows Vista and latest patch (36191)<br>We are already aware of this problem, and have added your bugreport to the existing issue in our defect tracking system.

Edited by: SublightNova on 05/09/2007 19:40:41 It's obvious CCP couldn't care less about any issues we are having. I'm also noticing a lot of missing sounds in Vista since the lastest patch.
Aside from the fact that alchemy doesn't support vista, it's an EVE issue it seems.
I've been wanting to open a petition for this for some while now but I can't because CCP only allows you to have 2 problems with their product.

Setting the EveEXE file to win xp sp2 compat mode and running that file directly fixed the problem for me. Allows the hardware box to be checked. No missing sounds in game, but I have not been in a high sound environment yet to be 100% sure.

It does that for me too, and checked or not has also cured my windowed sound problem. I could have sworn I'd tried that before, thank you Mr Bomber.
However... I have a 5.1 sound system running off the SB Audigy, and with acceleration on the sub-woofer goes off. Acceleration off and back it comes. The other channels are unaffected.
So far I've only tried this with the in station sounds, which are multichannel (music is 2-channel). I'll just pop out and BBQ some smack talking kids outside to hear if OMGWTFPWNED sounds better.

sadly Creative Labs has been atleast imo kinda down hill since the SBlive atleast in the driver department. they are like ATI during their bad run, great hardware engineers but the software guys just aint cutting it.

If you'll turn the sound off like the rest of EvE you won't have these problems. Though I admit after months of no sound, turning it on is a treat... Right until you have problems. -----------

Got to remember if your soundcard was built by microsoft CCP devs would be all over it like it was a major game instability issue. but as its by creative forget it its an intended game feature... Why 120k Subscribers trust a Company that doesnt know how to code properly and then start whining at them when its plain and obvious is beyond me.

The sound in Eve is an aid to safe piloting just like Overview. If Mr Evil Pirate starts to target you and you're not looking at the screen, sound is your friend. It can generate 'you know you've been playing Eve too long when...' stories though. I was watching an Eve video last week which included the targeting beeps, and my hand automatically grabbed the mouse ready for action.
So far as I can tell ticking the hardware acceleration box makes no improvement to anything in Eve for me, so I'll leave it off. --- Trikassi Enterprises, oiling the jumpgates of commerce without microbidding. |

Ran into this today, luckily I'm running a dual boot system so I can still get my good sound on XP... but it would be nice to have ALchemy support while fiddling around in Vista.
