I just picked up an Indy after playing for about a week. I like the ship, but I'm getting passed by little old ladies in 78 Buicks on the way to a jump gate. How can I get a little more speed, I have 1 10MN fitted on.

If you already have 10mn afterburner you can`t do much more (except better skills).
You could always fit +30 overdrives on low slots, but you lose so much cargo space that this isn`t really worth it...

Buy a 79 Buick.
Unless you bought an indy that can fit 2 10MN afterburners, you're out of luck. High engineering skills are a plus.
High skills in Navigation help the speed. Acceleration control helps also, as does more afterburner skill, obviously.
You CAN fit a 10MN MWD on an Iteron V or a Mammoth, but you have to give up cargo space to do it, and you also need RCU's and those Micro Auxiliary thingies (I forget what they are called) that give 10 straight up power.
Or just buy an AMC Gremlin.

A week after starting I managed to get my indy up to a constant 270m/s indefinately, that was with only 1 after burner... You can do this with propulsion units salvaged from pirate containers which unfortuantly reduce cargo space... after only 1 week you shouldn't need 5000cargo anyway so this should be ok for a while until you cart larger stuff.
I roleplay... there is this computer game called "Earth - The First Genesis" where i play a character in the early 21st century. |

My understanding is that each level of afterburner skill gives a 5% bonus to the length of time your AB's stay burning per each activation. It doesn't increase your speed, but it does lower the cap cost to maintain it. Is this correct, or did I get it wrong somewhere? -In space, no one can hear you whine |

1) Train Acceleration Control 2) Use nanofibers. They increase your speed up to 21 m/s each and don't eat any cargo space. However they do occupy a low slot that could be used for a cargo expander so it's a speed vs cargo tradeoff. 3) To increase cargo space (since you cannot use expanders) train the indy skill higher and/or use containers. Huge and Giant containers let you carry 30% more but restrict the maximum size of objects you can carry.

I miss the old days, 4x 50% ab on a indy, even with full expander setup around 900m/s op speed i reached was around 4k :P
but nowdays nano-fibers/2xab is the way to go (at least for the lower lvl indy's), great turn rate and speed buff. THe problem im having with the overdrives is the huge turn you make before warping.
