Time to dust of this old chestnut eh?
A carebear simply put considers PvP outside of dueling RAPE.
Anything else is just some one venting their E-RAGE

Eh, Not sure, but I do know when I go on ratting sprees I often say I'm in carebear mode or something. I don't refer to anyone being a carebear though, unless it's a joke or reference to something.

The original creation of the word carebear, though open to some controversy, was created in the hayday of Asheron's Call, on the darktide server, and in UO, both of which were pvp through and through, the definition was originally to define people who would attempt to greatly reduce or remove the risk from their playing, by overlevelling, moving in massive groups, or otherwise triviliazing the gameplay.
Within about a week of this word becoming commonplace, it seemed the only people using it were the carebears themselves, who obviously thought the purpose of these games was in fact to be safe in a high risk environment, so the concept of being a carebear was completely lost on them. The people responsible for the uprise of the word immediately stopped using it and from then on, it's been a carebear word, who's meaning has been completely lost and twisted into a myriad of meanings, all of which are not even remotely correct.

True.
On the other hand, if you used a weapon against someone for using a racial slur in real life, you're either overly sensitive or stupid or both.
On the other hand, if you use a racial slur in the company of someone who may be insulted by it in real life, you're either overly insensitive or stupid or both.
Thus, I have concluded that anyone caught in this situation is stupid, including myself. I win. Can I have cake?

While I understand the "carebears don't PvP, they run from a fight etc etc" I dont get the synonymity between carebear and whiner. I've seen plenty of carebears and PvPers who are whiners (heck, just look at anti-carebear pirates "ZOMG REMOVE WCS AND WTZ!!eleventyone!1). But that's not a jab at pirates,, there are plenty of carebears who make me cringe with their "Bring concord to low sec, have harsher penalties for piracy, give us solo low-sec haulers some love" *******s.
I'm a carebear. I do most of my manufacturing in hi-sec, I run mish in low sec and go between-systems with a full rack of WCS and my rat mods in my hold. There's risky rewards to be had in low sec. And if I get killed in low sec, good on you, you just earnt several million in stuff, that's why you're a pirate.
Case example when I lost 400mil when my Bustard got popped by a low sec camp. I didn't whinge, cringe, cry, even though it was 1/3rd of my net worth. Piracy is part of the game, I challenge myself by trying to escape it.
Towards that end, EVE is one big game of chasings, and as a carebear, *you* are trying to catch me. When you catch me, you get rewarded. When I get away, I get rewarded. It's a pretty simple equation.
And so yeah, if I use myself as an example, a carebear simply doesn't PvP and generally isn't at an NBSI stance. Generally it's an NBRFI (Not blue run from it) stance. It doesnt mean I hate being killed. It's part of the game, and the carebears who whinge about it and hi sec ganking need to get a clue, as do the pirates who cry when someone fits stabs and gets away from their low sec camp.

Quote: I define carebear as someone who will never take a risk while trying to maximise a reward.
For Example one of the bigest carebears, Someone who stays in an NPC corp running missions in motsu (highest quality caldari navy agent) in order to maximise profit while being completely free of PvP and wardecs.
Another example, someone in 0.0 who only rats all day in an empty system, and logs off as soon as some one else jumps into local.
Not limiting your self to only Hisec = less bear like. Not staying in an NPC corp for fear of war decs = less bear like. Intentionaly engaging in a MMORPG with other players, be it thru actual day trading (not selling loot for whatever its going for in system mind you), PvP combat, courier missions etc = less bear like.
Basicaly Carebears are the ppl who want to play this as a single player game, and do not want any interaction with others.
I suppose by that definition then I am THAT kind of carebear. However I don't stay in an NPC corps BECAUSE I want to avoid war decs, I stay in an NPC corp because I don't like putting up with the drama that involves corporations, wars, empires, territories, inter-alliance relations, funds, 'mandatory' events, other people, etc etc. It has been my personal experience with several MMOs as well as stories from my friends who played those and others, that guilds/corps and their ilk breeds Highschool Drama at a rate and size that has yet to be recorded by natural science. I'm completely content with my NPC corp. There are no wars I need to concern myself with, there are no events or meetings I have to deal with. I don't have to be concerned with territory or opposing factions. I can go where I want, rat where I want, mine where I want, and overall do as I please. There are no inter-alliance relations I have to worry about, the entire galaxy is open to me and I wouldn't change that for the world.
As far as mission farming in Motsu goes... Sadly I don't have the fitted Raven to do that quite yet, and I hear that system is so jam packed with other farmers that it would bog my connection down horribly. I think I'll take a slightly less quality agent in another system. But what is wrong with this? I see it as an excelent source of income which, in the end, is what we are all after anyways. If this wrong, then I don't know what right is. The goal is to make money. If you're having your ship blown up constantly, then you're not making money. If you're farming missions quickly and successfully and not spending much income to do so, then you are making money.
I must just be missing the part of the equation that says the only RIGHT way to earn money is to get killed, or have constant attempts on your life by other players. To me, I just don't see that as productive.
So I suppose I do fit into that definition of carebear. I always find myself wondering why people hate that? Just because it's not YOUR playstyle doesn't mean it's wrong. If people don't like others mission farming in Motsu because they're free from being killed then go out there and prove that wrong. Fly out to Motsu and kill them.
So yeah...where some people see a carebear I see someone just making money and enjoying the game the same ammount as others.

If you hadn't gone into some psychobabble explanation as to WHY carebears don't fight, I might have agreed with you. In my case, I am more interested in building an empire than in vaporizing a random noob. Therefore, I'm labeled as a Carebear. But I've got 45+ BS kills and have lost 2 Carriers doing that Carebearing.
While Carebear is generally considered a deragatory term, and PVP'r is generally considered some sort of compliment, I actually disagree. In my experience, most PVP'rs are 8 year old boys with the attention span of a gnat that expect Eve to present them with something to shoot every 30 seconds or so. Ya know... something like the Donkey Kong players who spend weeks jumping over barrels then expect you to be impressed when they finish the level.
That being said (vented?), I'll agree that a Carebear is someone who tends to avoid fights, while pvp'rs think its the only thing to do in Eve.
well if you think your pvpers are all 8 year olds then you need a new alliance bud... It's true some industrial focused characters turn into pvpers and usually those are the best kind since they often have the patience to lead and think ahead of a situation.
I've been a PVP character my whole eve career and while I've only been interested in pvp I've done industrial things to help the corp/alliance I'm in like any good pvper would do. Could I be a lot richer with an industrial character... you bet your ass. But eve's pleasure for me is not in the making of isk and acquiring of rare "uber" junk since I've learned that pvp has much less to do with the ship you fly and much more to do with the nut that flies in it and those who fly next to that nut.
In 0.0 everyone must fight or everyone dies... even the "carebares". If you don't share this attitude go back to empire. You aren't ready to play eve online yet.
As to the word "carebare" very few know what it really means. In reality a carebare is a person who spends their time helping younger players and holding their hands and in a sense caring for those up and coming members in any eve career (there are lots of PVP carebares in alliances). 90% of eve players are carebares or have carebared. Those people who aren't carebares are the ones who go out, take initiative and do something for themselves and their friends without being lead around or having to LEAD OTHERS around by the nose.
True non-cares are a rare thing in eve.

Except the times "carebears" fly into 0.0 and rat or mine to our hearts content and then make it out safely or log when someone with a horrible security rating or member of a known pirate corp jumps in. Granted that's not a very common occurrence, but it does happen. And each time it does, it's a victory. Conversely, each time we're blown up it's a victory for the other person. If I find an empty system why in God's name would I NOT milk it for all it's worth? Do I HAVE to go seeking out other people in order to be a "real" EVE player?
I don't know, in my overall plan of making money I never found "dive headlong into occupied territory to pick a fight and most likely lose time, ships and ISK" to be very beneficial to the goal of making my income RISE.
Now if I wanted it to go DOWN, you'd have a point...

OMG. It's not the humiliation I'm concerned about, who cares if you kill me? LOL It's something else:
- loss of implants (cloning isn't viable because then you can't learn effectively, who heck wants to wait 24 hours to be able to jump? LOL) - loss of skillpoints (if you happen to be left without money and can't insure yourself) - loss of 20M every time I die (due to "mandatory" clone upgrade)
I mean come on, LOL. Who the HECK wants to PvP like this? Maybe you do, I don't. You say it's not enough that I put my ship and modules on the line, I should also PAY for losing (clone upgrade)? I should also PAY with my implants for losing? Ridiculous. Or that I should PAY with the lost time on learning if I happen to use a clone w/o implants? I have to pay three times for doing PvP aside from the ship and module loss?
I'm not concerned about losing ships or modules. Don't care much about those. Main concern is implants and training time.

For me, a carebear is someone risk averse. That means everyone is a carebear. No one likes to die uselessly, after all. The worst of them are : - gankers that fight 30 vs 1 or mothership against shuttles and ask for changes so it's easier for them to kill people, - missions runner in empty systems leaving /cloaking as soon as someone unfriendly enters local.

The trouble is that carebear means different things to different people.
I spend my time mostly missioning in high sec or ratting in "secure"ish 0.0. Lowsec reminds me of the ghettos I avoid in real life and I treat it the same as I do there. Most PvP does not appeal to me - fleet battles are lagged to hell and the hours of pos warfare dull beyond decrpition, solo PvP just isnt me. Small gang PvP can be an interesting diversion tho. None of this means I won't do any of the above if I or the corp needs it, I just preer not to where I can avoid it. If I get attacked at any point so be it, and I do know how to fight back.
To some people this makes me a carebear, to others not. As the term is so widely used it is better to avoid it. The same with PvPer and non PvPer - which am I ? I don't want to PvP and 90% of the time will go out of my way to avoid it even where I would very probably win, but I will fight if I have to.

When UO came out, people could be killed by PKs. So a heavy discussion came on forums and people threatened to cancel their account if PKing was not removed. So they split the world in 2 shards, Felucca and Trammel, one with PKs allowed and the other with no PKing possible. The people who lived on the safe side were called carebears, and the others griefers.
I don't think either term is appropriate. When I started EVE I met a miner who explained me it was not good to mine in 0.6 because of NPC pirates, much better to stay in 0.9 and mine scordite all day. I don't think he was afraid of PKs or anything, he just thought it was more efficient to do it that way. Of course game rules changed a lot since that time so his reasoning wouldn't probably be the same now.
Personnally I'm not afraid of PVP but I can't stand gate camping, occasionaly I go to a low sec belt to mine for the thrill, sometimes in 0.0 but my implants limited me, now there are jump clones so I'm going back there soon.
