My significant other is still adjusting to my penchant for playing EVE WAAAAAY too much. That's on one account, too.
Yesterday, I created a Gallente Intaki Reborn Miner alt to learn more about mining and, maybe, make a little extra isk on the side for my main, a Gallente Jen-Mai Special Forces character. I learned, early, that I can't train a skill on both characters at one time. So...
...I'm curious about whether to keep trying this experiment. I've gotten a lot of the basic skills for combat at IV now, so I can afford to lose a few hours training up my mining alt. When I logged in, I noticed that said alt's drone skill was at I, which makes it sort of hard to load up mining or scout drones (the latter for defense). I also have very little in the way of ship skills -- I started training frigate II immediately.
That said, is this a pointless endeavor? Trying to maintain a casual mining alt for isk on the same account as my main? If not, what can I do to help the mining alt be more productive without taking too much training time away from my main.
BTW -- I should mention -- doing the invention and manufacturing thing was sort of cool. I hadn't tried it before. Learned a lot just diddling around with this alt last night.
Anyway -- any input would be welcome. Tell me to drop it now if I'm wasting time and resources on it. At the very least, I've learned a little about industry.
Thanks, Mos Superum

It will take you about 3 months to train a char to fly a Covetor, which is where you'd want to be for it to make ISK for your main. 3 months is about 3.5 mil sp that your main won't get. If you want your mining character to also have good refining skills for the ore it mines and perhaps invention/science skills, add another 2 or so months (about 6 mil sp total).
I would recommend opening a second account. First of all, this would enable you to use two characters while mining. Mining alone is difficult and you will fall prey to ore thieves regularly if you don't haul your ore to the station as you mine it. Mining as part of a corporation you'd have to rely on others being online and wanting to help you haul. On the same account as your main you can train a character to use a basic hauler, which is 1-2 days of training at most. After that you leave your hauler and miner in same system while your main can be anywhere else, or you can use your main for hauling but you'd have to rendezvous with the miner for every mining op. Second, you can pay for your accounts with ISK. So if you're worried about the costs of having two accounts, if you can generate 170 mil a month for a 30 day GTC or 130 mil a month (about 400 mil total) for a 90 day one you don't have to pay anything extra out of your pocket. Third, you won't have to lose any skill point training from your main, which will be about 3-6 months of training and that's a lot of sp to lose out on. Of course instead of training a mining char you can opt for simply buying one for ISK which would require you to buy and sell GTCs first since you probably don't have the 1 bil required for a low sp mining char. But that's another option some people choose.

Thank you for the information. Gives me a better perspective on what's involved.
I did not realize that you could make ISK in the game on one account to buy GTC's for a second account. Quite the ingenius method of maintaining a 2nd account. Seems, to me, to be rather "spouse"-friendly.

If you want to stay on a single account, I would recommend doing it all on a single character. There are a lot of ship handling/fitting skills (not to mention learning skills) that you don't want to have to learn twice.

Another option is to create a second account with the intention of getting the character skilled and then transfer it to your main account once it has enough skills.
So far I've done this twice, but very unsuccessfully.......I've never been satisified that my alt has enough skills, so I keep the account open for just a little longer to train just one more skill.
End result - I have 3 accounts and I probably will have 3 accounts forever!!
I can't really recommend this course of action if you don't have the cash, but hey I'm old enough and secure enough to afford it.....(and probably should be mature enough to know better).
Cheers Baka ______________________ Have a Skill in training every second of every day and never buy a ship you can't afford to replace at least once. |

I do this same method. 3 acounts.. 15 x3 - 45 bucks a month for fun when I get to play them. I usually play all 3 at the same time as well, so I definitely get my moneys worth. I let the wife do the blockbuster 24.99 all access plan and she gets starz and hbo for another 20 bucks.. thats 45 for her right there.
we call it even ;)
