I know I promised to have a second email out early this week but due to the patch, some other project and getting some resources setup this has been delayed.
I now have the forums created that we will be using, testing servers are being configured. I am still waiting on some additional tester information from our partners.
Once that is done and the new builds are in then it will be ready to go.
I will send you all a new email early next week with the updated timelines (though they still might get some other adjustments).
To all of those that missed the signup, I'm sorry but our 'roster' is full. There will be a further section to the beta progranm once we have the closed beta completed so you have not completely missed out.
I will also try to keep you all updated on our progress so that you can see what is coming.
Thanks again.

Edited by: Kadesh Priestess on 31/08/2007 22:04:21 Lingorm, i hadn't received any emails about beta client at all despite i've signed up for testing in that thread. If email has been sent, it could have been rejected by my mailserver... isn't it better to send EVE-mail instead, if possible (and i request to do it this way if i was in mailing list, please)? Btw, i've found job at last... so now i'm officially QA-engineer too \o/ Edit: lol, sorry, just few sec ago noticed your reply about bounced mails in another thread...

With a sore regret to have this Eve-Mac beta signup missed, I'm still looking forward to get into the next beta section.
Wonder if I could subscribe for the news on the subj? Is there any 'Eve-Mac' RSS of some sort? Or would you just put all commenters of this post on a waiting list, with a further ingame-mail notice upon the event? Please, I'd really hate to miss the next roster-list like this.

The first email was to gather details to choose who would be in the first beta roster. Possibly not all those that replied even made it in to the roster.
The second email on the 5th is confirmation for those on the roster I guess.

Any chance of extended the closed beta sign up time frame? I never knew it was around and I'm a paid cedega user and a professional QA person. I currently can't use EVE on Linux as Cedega is limited to using one account at a time, since I pay for two full accounts, I can't use them when using Linux. I would love to help test this!

Any chance we will be able to get some details about the beta from players participating - or do you think there's an NDA? :)
I know the Mac client will probably get some attention from Apple, as they dedicate a page for Mac compatible games on their own website. I'm sure it will even catch the attention of current mac users who've not succumb to using Bootcamp for gaming.

OK Update Time!!!11ElevenOne.
I am waiting for the latest build to come through and as soon as it does I will be posting it up on our download service and sending out the link.
No there is no NDA as there is nothing 'new' in this client that is not in the current client. Testers are free to discuss there 'experience' with others we just remind them that they have been asked to help us find any bugs that are left (and I am sure they will find some) so that we can fix them before we open the software up for anyone to look at.
Any other Questions?

We had to do a new build to exclude the 'Microsoft' files from our client build so that it can be legally distributed.
I am now in the process of getting this build to TG for them to wrap it.
Will update with ETA on the installer when I know it.

If you had been reading up on the forums you would know that CCP has hired Transgaming to work for them, meaning they have already been paid. You are not gonna get or need a full version of Cedega, you get a specially Cedega wrapped EVE Client, running in a specially made Cedega version, which can ONLY run EVE and nothing else. Therefor you do NOT need to buy a subscription for Cedega or anything else than pay your EVE subscription.
This fact has been stressed more than once on the forums. CCP will *NEVER* force anyone to pay more than the EVE subscription to be able to play EVE with an official client.

Update.
Just got off the phone with Transgaming.
Some small issues with the MS-less build that we are taking care of.
You will not need to copy ant of the files over as transgaming provide their own implementations of them in the environment. We are just going through ans seeing what is needed and what is not needed to make sure that things are all good.
Sorry for the run around on this and I hope to have better news for you early next week.

Edited by: DahMainMan on 22/09/2007 16:45:28 This may sound stupid, but i assume the actual reason its takin so long is transgameing. i bet thay are laggin on makin a actual instaler addon thingymajig. but by advice fellas. as far as this client. just get wine or buy a copy of cedega for 15 bucks. and give it a test. atleast at this point perhaps we could help out ccp hammer down a few problems even b4 we get this linux wrapper from cedega. trust me, this will take quite a while to finish. and it wil be buggy and crapy from the start. expect that from tansgaming. thay are quite small, i did not come here to bash them, but this is the way IT IS. we have a while to go till we can just run a file and get eve in linux. but its already damn near close to that.(Wine,Cedega)
so, just get eve goin in any way u can in linux, also my i advice one thing, there is a linux nvidia and ati driver installer called Envy, it will install the best drivers from ati-amd and nvidia, I get 45 more fps with a 7950 Gt. For once eve runs almost better in linux than xp, usin the 100.**. nvidia drivers. case in point, whoever said eve is what is makin linux run at lower fps?
http://albertomilone.com/nvidia_scripts1.html
BACKUP yer darn xorg.conf file. im not gonna hole yer hand. but if i have too i will. but just goto that page, read up. download install. and update yer drivers. trust me, if all works out well. you will see liquid smooth fps. well, damn near anyhow. Hope This Helps.
Dmm Out.

This is a good question, but the answer is that most of the current FPS shooters using modern gfx ARE working. There are some known issues currently with shaders, but given that EVE's current engine is older than a lot of games that currently DO work via cedega using dx9c, I'd say we'll be fine when EVE's gfx get bumped up to that spec.

Just got off the phone with Transgaming.
Some small issues with the MS-less build that we are taking care of.
You will not need to copy ant of the files over as transgaming provide their own implementations of them in the environment. We are just going through ans seeing what is needed and what is not needed to make sure that things are all good.
Sorry for the run around on this and I hope to have better news for you early next week.
its early next week :) is there any update on this? i'm buying a new IMac this weekend and would really like to run eve on it :)

Okay, so I know I'm late to the party. I had a long hiatus from the game due to giving up my PC in favour of a MacBook Pro, and I'm only now getting back into EVE.
In the past week I've been suffering the pain of trying to play EVE using CrossOver Office and/or Parallels, with varying degrees of success. In light of said pain, I'd love the opportunity to test the EVE Mac OS X client, and as a software developer I should be able to give you useful feedback regarding bugs, etc. --

Client builds are going through the final test at Transgaming. I will be downloading them overnight and tomorrow morning (all things going well).
I will be sending out an email to the Beta testers tomorrow with instructions on the program and access information to the test server that will be used.
The client itself will be available for download on Monday for you all to have at it.
We only have 2 small issues that are not show stoppers.
These are :
Crash on Quit on the Mac client (does not seem to corrupt any files so we are going ahead) JPEG Scaling (some avatars are missing some decorations)
There you have it. We are going ahead and you should all be testing happily next week. I am still organizing extra forum access to record your findings.
We will also be running at least 2 patch tests during the Beta program so be aware that you will be required to patch the beta to test the patching system.
EDIT : We are already working with Transgaming on the new features coming in Trinity 2 and making sure that everything will be supported on the different clients.
We are also trying to plan some EVE on alternate platform stuff for Fanfest, but this has not been confirmed yet.

yay! so glad to see things are moving again. :D
i do have a couple of tiny questions if you think you could answer them. will antialiasing work in the game? cider appears to have trouble with it and some games (c&c3 antialiasing settings do nothing) but, since boot camp is the only way to get it with osx, itd really be nice to have it. also, will windowed mode be supported by the testing phase? id rather run it in a window if i can (toggling the config file setting), but im thinking theres a tiny chance that might introduce some bug that wouldnt appear in fullscreen.

Windowed mode is disabled in the EVE client on Mac and Linux but the Transgaming wrapper has window control.
So you set the EVE Client to the Resolution you want than then resize the Window via the Transgaming tools.
I will find out about the Anti-aliasing.

If the 'wrapper' hold true to cedega standards, then anti-aliasing will, or should be available in conjunction with the features specific to ati /nvidia's drivers (for linux).
That said, I never use it with the current client as while there is some "smoothing", the frame rate hit is just not worth it, and as well, the client without looks very good regardless.
It would be nice to see if this is improved over current cedega capabilities, but I'd rather have the fps personally.
That all said, I anxiously await the beginning of the testing. Thanks for the heads up Lingorm!

great, thanks for that :) i just found out that i can get antialiasing to work in parallels with the ati displays utility. so far ive not had any luck with opengl overrides and cider tho, presumably because its not actually using opengl..

I'm curious; what exactly the Cedega-based Linux client will offer over a standard Linux+Wine installation?
If the 'update' process will work; that'd be good... as that's the only thing I see obviously not working on my Linux+Wine installation. With each EVE update; I have to d/l the 'whole' 600Mb client instead of just using the auto-updater.

Since binaries should be the same, i guess that wrapper/installer will ship as package (that should be installed as usual package into root), and it will automatically download+install game to home folder for each user (~/.eve most probably), so that theoretically 2 or more users should dl game corresponding number of times (ofc there'll be ways to avoid it, but they're not so user-friendly). And this package will be used to run eve... transgaming supplies us with package... CCP with game client... ------- EVE Online + GNU/Linux |

It's about convenience. Not having to worry about getting all the dependencies yourself. The same reason why people pay for certain Linux distros.

You might want to try using the auto-patcher again. Works flawlessly for me. As does downloading the patch and manually running that.

i cant speak for cedega, but cider (transgamings wrapper for osx) performs extremely well with the games that have been 'ported' using it so far. i assume that having transgaming themselves working with ccp on this will give very close to native performance with cedega too, and it should certainly be better than a less tweaked port using something like wine.

Also, try not to exit the client, it currently crashes on exit no matter what you do and you need hard reboot. You can not force-quit it either, if you Apple/Tab out. So just let it run, but, she sure as hell eating my CPU I am running activity monitor and my CPU load is at 45% . She only used 606 MB/of 2GB RAM, which is a blessing.

Best way to Quit the client at the moment: Command/Tab out of the client, then, Use your Activity Monitor, and then "Force-Quit" the client from the activity monitor, the only way to quit the client w/o hard reboot.

You need to wait for the client to get it's status information from Tranquility (Incompatible Protocol) and THEN enter the test server IP and move out of the server box. The client will THEN get the connection information from the test server and you should be able to log in.
We are aware of the Crash on Quit issue and it only applies to the Log in screen on the Mac (we are hoping to get a fix soon) but it was deemed acceptable to continue with that issue.
There is also an image scaling issue with portraits but it is graphical only.

So, we just have to wait on the password issue clarification.

About yer fps and what not, be advised to get max fps, install the 100.**.*** nvidia driver. not sure about ati.
if u want its automated, then install the envy program.
envy can also instal ati drivers. USE IT! i got 45 more fps by drivers alone, ppl have to realise. the problem is NOT with linux or eve or wine/cedega. its the videocards own drivers that are causing this lowerd fps. once wine is optimized, code wise we will get proly another 10-20 fps..thats it.
btw, tested eve with wine .45 or whatever it is, and it runs with no flaws..just a bit of mouse flicker. AWSOME.

I'm getting username/username and username/password errors for both my accounts (and yes I'm registered for the beta ).
As the mac feedback forums don't seem to exist yet, I'd also mention that Eve hung when I quit from login screen, with 'Do not display this message again' checked. It took a quick fiddle with the power button for my Mac to love me again.

Originally by: CCP Lingorm We are aware of the Crash on Quit issue and it only applies to the Log in screen on the Mac (we are hoping to get a fix soon) but it was deemed acceptable to continue with that issue.
There is also an image scaling issue with portraits but it is graphical only.
And
Use Command+enter to go to windowed mode Use Activity Monitor to force quit EVE client

Un update, for those who will be logging in the first time:
Be patient, it takes a while to actually log into the server. You will see "Acquiring Bulk Data" - for a while, and then it will load, so do not Quit/Re-Enter it wont help, just go have soda, feed your fish, or something, then it will work.

Is there any possible idea at all of a roughish date for when it will be opened for others to test at all? Even the end of this year? Or what? Sometihng to give us hope. I thout fdor a nice surprise that it may be fully realaesed and tested fully when Rev 3 comes out. That would be a huge launch. Though I doubt that will happen considering how soon it is supposed to be and how far testing is in.
Also is the server that you are testing on isolated like Test Server (Sisi) or is it actually engrossed on the Tranq server?

We have worked hard internally and the closed beta is more of a sanity check of the client.
We are still confirming final Dates for release but we will be having an Open Beta Phase, which will be run against Tranquility.
My estimate is that you should see full support for this on tranquility in a couple of weeks and full availability soon after that.
But please do not quote me on it, these are my guesses not confirmed facts.

Sorry to ask but I didn't quite understand. The Open Beta hpase when run against Tranq that means not on Tranq but on seperate server liek Sisi. Sorry I had to get up early today, my brain is fried.

EDIT: Shocking spelling mistakes
It means that open beta will be able to connect to TQ, the current closed beta runs on a completely seperate server, not TQ and not sisi. If it werent to be run on TQ in the open beta phase it would mean a LOT of work for GM's copying users to the new server etc.

I am getting a couple of questions about travelling.
The test server loads systems 'On demand' not at startup.
This means that there could be delays on moving/jumping/gating into a system. Just wait a couple of minutes for the system to load and try again.

I had some problems with spaces at the end of the md5 link. Just a heads up in case someone gets problems with the md5 verification. (Remove the extra spaces and it should download the correct file instead of a 404 error thingy.)

I had some problems with the installer from the debian package. it seems to add an additional .md5 to the filename. I changed a bit in the updater.py file to fix it... But I somewhat doubt I'm allowed to redistribute the file . Anyone with some programming experience can do it, even I who have never written a line of python in my life!

This is related to the previous post I made. Instead of right-click+save as, just copy the link and download it that way. If you check the contents of the md5 file, it'll probably just be a 404 error html thingy.

odd... because I got the additional .md5 at the end at first aswell, but that was with the extra spaces, and when I removed them I didn't get that anymore...
Anyway, a much simpler way than editing a file to fix it would be to simply rename the file

Good find! It only misbehaves when the installer finds the files in one of a few predetermined directories. Putting the dat and md5 in a subdirectory and browsing for them manually in the installer will do the trick.

So what we know so far:
1. The files must be stored outside of the home directory. Create a sub directory and put them in there. You can keep the .deb file in the home directory.
2. Install the deb file.
3. Run the EVE icon, this will eventually prompt you to brows to the installation package, and allow you to install.
4. If at any point you have tried to do a multiuser install you need to do a multiuser install to get eve to install otherwise it still thinks that it needs to be installed into the multi user directory.
5. For me I am able to load eve, I get a splash screen then a black screen as if there are no fonts installed. I tried to install fonts manually and this still did not fix the issue. Your signature exceeds the maximum allowed filesize of 24000 bytes -Kreul Intentions ([email protected])

I get splash and crash on the Linux client. Trying to get some logs to send in a bug report.
I've been running EVE via Wine for 6 months so I doubt its my system configuration.
..and BTW, at the moment, EVE is easier to set up under Wine than using Transgaming's option. Installation needs to be more streamlined if nothing else.
EDIT: I can run Transgaming's build of EVE using Wine just fine, no splash and crash. I would like to run the Log Server but I don't know how to run it in the same Cedega environment as EVE. Can anyone give a quick run through? Until I can at least do this, there is nothing I can test.

i have been able to install the EVE online client on my linux debian system using the .deb package , the .dat file and the .md5 file .
i had only to add the "python2.4-dbus" package using :
$ apt-get install python2.4-dbus
after this i have been able to run :
$ dpkg -i eveonline_000035_all.deb
after that running "eve" from console as user i have accepted the license and following the instructions i have installed the game (i had to manually select the folder where to find the .dat file , some users have already reported it on forums ) .
after install , when i run the game i can see the splash screen and i have audio too.
The problem is that I CANT login inside the game , it give me error about password .

Something has gone horribly wrong with my Mac client....
Few hrs back Bob Niac and I were happily shooting at jove battleships - and then.... this happened: http://dl.eve-files.com/media/0710/EVE-Gone_Bad.png
Basically I get a flashing screen, like my video went or something happened... I do not know. All I know I can login into Server, but I cant really do anything because I have them crazy lines running through my screen.
I removed EVE and reinstalled it again, did not help.
Any of you guys know if I can hard-rset settings somewhere in the files itself/package contents?

I'm getting this error:
"The game package appears to have been corrupted.
md5sum returned this errorcode: 256"
when first starting EVE. It tries to download the GUI updates and then errors out with this error.
Anyone have a clue what this means?

Dude, no they aren't.
I have done EVERYTHING specified in the previous pages and still I get the error I already mentioned. The biggest thing I am seeing is that everyone else is stating that after clicking the EVE icon in the menu, it asks you to "browse to the installer". Yeah, I NEVER get this. I get the agreement, the single/multi user selection option, and then it just goes straight to downloading the updated GUI, and then the failure error. So no, the stuff above doesn't help, I wouldn't have posted if it did.

Yep. Plunked them into a sub-directory to start out, so I never actually ran into this issue. However, I think i solved part of it. for some reason firefox copied a .part file of the md5 into my home directory. I suspect I have a corrupted download. I'm going to wget both the dat and the md5 files and try again.

Nope, didn't touch the py scripts. i already had the latest version of python installed, so i didn't have any need to mess with them.
I actually DID get it to finally install. I simply selected the "Download from the internet" option, and the installer automatically pulled in the files it needed from Cedega and it installed just fine.
I do suspect a corrupt .dat file from the e-mail link though, since the auto-download feature did NOT download the .dat and md5 from the same location. So I'd imagine that we have a corrupt .dat file on CCP's download site that simply needs to be replaced.

Password problem here. Emailed for it.
The installer worked perfectly here on an ubuntu 7.04 machine. (Of course, I'm already a cedega customer, so it better! ) The gdebi installation of the .deb file was my method of installation as "single user".
The .md5 worked after page >save as and getting rid of the trailing stuff.
Game launched and got to the log in screen with no issues. It defaults to 640x480 fullscreen, but closing the client restored proper rez to the machine (which was an issue with cedega's client FS in the past.)

Check the contents of the .md5 file, it's probably a 404 error html thingy.
Don't download the md5 file by right-clicking on it in the mail and select save as, because that link is corrupt. Copy the text into a browser window or something and download it that way.

just move the .md5 and .dat file into a dir on yer desktop called eveinst, when the installer cant find the file on say yer desktop(or where you ran it from) it will then ask you to point the installer to the files it needs, thus point it to yer dir you moved the two files into a bit ago. the .md5 and .dat ones. That will do yah. Have Fun. *Stickey.*

There were some problems with sound choppiness when aura was speaking, but it seems that switching to alsa has solved that issue.
For some reason, the game reports that it's running in 60Hz even though the monitor says 85Hz. The fps in station is fairly low, around 30-55 with a geforce 8800 ultra card. Vsync (vblank) is on, but it should still be higher - I blame bad nvidia drivers (others have done some testing on that, showing that the nvidia drivers do indeed suck for the 8 series in linux).
In space, all icons are at the same place (usually at the ship it seems) for some reason. Same thing with the map.

sorry i didnt reply here sooner, but theres a chance you can fix this by deleting the eve online preferences folder in ~library/preferences. thats where the client stores all the stuff that would otherwise go in my documents in doze, as well as cider config stuff for the game. beyond that folder and the game app theres nothing that gets modified anywhere else on your computer. if that doesnt fix things you should try running some other game that uses 3d hardware to check that its not a problem with hardware (overheating, et al).

ok, progress report so far:
1) client installed fine, no problems (text of the help bubbles is wrong on the type of installation screen by the way) 2) got my password from CCP (thanks) 3) launched game, and got stuck at "acquiring bulk data". It has now been 5 minutes and the client is still stuck on the "acquiring bulk data" screen. My "normal" eve installation works fine (tested it 5 seconds before) so the problem seems to be with either the server or the client ...

The "acuiring bulk data" step took a loooooooong time for me. Just wait a bit more. Go and have a coffee or something. And walk the dog. And make dinner. And breakfast. Stuff like that.

Well, things are looking ...... average! mini maps are now rendering correctly and slider bars are now rendering correctly (was broken in wine). I think I'm seeing a few extra special graphical effects too, but as I'm not flying the same ships or even at similar stations it's hard to say.
However, fps is not better or worse than under wine (I was hoping for a boost! but heh). Whilst you can target things, the targeting box is way off. Normally lower right corner, or slap in the middle of the ship.
But my main beef is the installation. It's not slick guys. The tgz layout is like a file sysem - why? It's just an installer! Once you have it installed, it did not create any icons or menu entries in my GNOME environment (non root single user install).
CEDEGA_PATH=~/.cedega exec ~/.cedega/.ui/runGUI -GAME EveOnline-linux Will start the game :)
The slickest install I've seen is a shell script that extracts files from itself to a temporary area and then runs the graphical install. I forget which did that, but from memory it was UT from EPIC/loki games. --- Gentoo/FreeBSD/Linux developer |

Agreed... my vision of perfect installation: Installer asks only 1 question - if i want it to dl game and install it or if i already have data file on my PC. No root installation (as far as i understood multi-user install is root install), it's stupid - users can't update client at all. And setting write permissions for root space goes against commonly used practice. If i want to install it as root - i'll login as root and install. Everything placed in root has to be processed using package manager. And checkinstall -D isn't solution cuz as far as i understand list of eve files is changed from time to time. ALL files should be stored in ~/.eve folder, please no forced creation of ~/EVE - i hated it in wine, and game couldn't be launched if folder was deleted. Engine and installer should come as package (the most convenient way; for me, at least) and be updated from repo. Repo for engine and installer, updates from TQ for game itself. Maybe separate installer for singularity with eve_test engine package and that will install SiSi1 game into ~/.eve_test... And released installer should either follow standard gtk/qt themes or utilize cool graphics that matches login window (last released theme, currently black from rev2) Also package name and version of installer are weird, something like 'eve' and '0.0.0.35' would be highly appreciated in the release :P ------- EVE Online + GNU/Linux |

Same for me - Splash and crash. I also have an out of date install of Cedega with an old install of Eve that was working as a reference for me but now stalls at the splash. I'm guessing there is a conflict with the three different installs.

Ok, played a bit with the Mac Client, atm using the normal client with CrossOver,
The sounds working, which is fine, graphics as far as i could check are ok as well, except some faulty textures, like Warptunnel, Amarr Stations. The UI and the cursor need some fixing when in Window mode, it seems to switch back and forth between system and EVE cursor and changes the position a bit (like 9-10 pixels in upperleft diagonal direction).
Some UI Elements (as station symbols, like when your in a belt) are not showing the right position, they show up on abot 110¦ part rotation always at the same place and then vanish at all.
In Station everything seems proper, nothing major occured there. Scrolling is a bit of a problem as it seems Cider has a problem with the two finger scrolling of the trackpad.
Seems like a good start, but i need some serious introduction in those GM Commands

Edited by: Scorpyn on 05/10/2007 20:11:06 Some weird stuff :
When the client is starting and when switching to the login screen, it's also switching to 1024x768. No big deal - it's switching back to 1280x1024 when it's entering the game. However, there are some weirdness connected to it :
* The client does not realize that it's running at 85Hz. For some reason it thinks it's running at 60Hz. For most of the games, this is fixed by switching directly from the resolution used by the desktop to the same resolution ingame, but that is not possible since EVE is switching to 1024x768 inbetween.
* I disabled all modes except 24 bit, 1280x1024 in xorg.conf and restarted the computer. This *should* have made it impossible for the client to switch to 1024x768 during the login screen, but unfortunately it does not seem to care about what's possible so it's switching to 1024x768 (85Hz) anyway. I checked the xorg.conf file to make sure that it didn't edit it, and it appeared to be unchanged.
* After removing all modes except 1280x1024@24, the client dies when trying to log in (after clicking connect). Well, it dies once - starting eve again and repeating the procedure works for some reason.
I looked in the config stuff (for eve) to see if there was a way to fix this, but I couldn't find anything obvious.

An Update for Mac Users:
1) DO NOT CHANGE FULL SCREEN/WINDOW MODE OPTIONS from within the game UI 'Esc' Menu. 2) Use Command+Enter key to Change the mode. 3) Then Use the Resolution Changing options in the 'ESC' menu. 4) DO NOT touch the Window/Full Screen Option. Leave it as it is, that can cause a client to go crazy.

Anyhow, have any Mac users noticed a color shift in their display when Eve is launched and running? I can't really describe it too well, because I'm almost colorblind, but there's definitely a shift while playing Eve. It goes back to normal after the app has been quit. I noticed it today during login and on the select a character screen, and I wanted to know if it's just an "isolated to me" kind of thing. I haven't created a color profile, and I'm just using the default one with my Alu iMac.

I can't really describe it too well, because I'm almost colorblind, but there's definitely a shift while playing Eve. It goes back to normal after the app has been quit. I noticed it today during login and on the select a character screen, and I wanted to know if it's just an "isolated to me" kind of thing. I haven't created a color profile, and I'm just using the default one with my Alu iMac.
no colour shift for me (monitor set to srgb profile and calibrated), but there is a gamma shift. most games will do that when you launch them since they have their own gamma setting which will brighten/darken the entire screen. that could be what youre experiencing, but if theres a definite shift in hue rather than just brightness then you may have found a bug.

anyone find it odd, how wine runs eve so flawless at 1600x1200at85hz with all the goodies turned on, yet. this cedega wrapper has some major problems..bolth gfx and installer. seems to me ccp best watch out, cause transgaming will try and lock there installer to eve forever. Beware. cedega is nice, but its now an old uneeded thing of the past for linux gamers. keep that in mind ccp.
and on a biger note, wtfh is it that is killin my fps in this test, yet wine runs 80+ fps. in cedega 35.

I'm halfway tempted to learn scripting and just write an installer for EVE on Linux via Wine myself.
I'm in the beta test of course, but am completely unable to test anything at the moment because EVE just does a splash and crash and makes no dump nor can I figure out how to get the LogServer to run to record what is happening. I have actually run the special "for Cedega" build of EVE in Wine with no problems, so the issue lies with Transgaming.
I know everyone has their preferences, but at the moment mine lay with Wine being the superior software.
On a side note, the current build on Sisi (38060) splash and crashes in Wine so possibly this might be somehow related... At least that I can bug report.

Yes, looks like it. It's EVE in regular Cedega basicly, but they now created an installer to go along with it. I am kind of hoping they did some EVE specific optimizations to boost FPS, but I saw other people who experienced an FPS drop

FUBAR!
This whole project is fubar, this is classic transgaming work, thay build stuff half assed, so thay can drag it out for half a year, all the while ccp has to hand em $$$ for a project that we DONT need. DO YOU WANT THEM STUCK TO EVE FOREVER?!?!? SO THAY CAN MAKE IT SUCK!??!
look at the proof for ffs.
my wine install can run it all, plus many other games, you ccp guys need to heed our linux users warning, we know our stuff. been usin cedega for years..and for years i have hated it, onley reason i used it..well did use it, cause it did work..kinda. now wine has blown it out of the water.
case in point, thay moved almost all there linux focus to just cider, there lile mac wrapper, why?? cause wine was about to own there sorry asses..again. onley thing TG has in cedega is a buncha copy protect code that just Bloats it, its wine code is waay old vs what wine itself is running, yah see? wine plays catch up with windows, transgamin plays catchup with wine, so on.
DUMP THE CRAPPY CEDEGA!!!!!
now ccp do this, make more than one installer, ie have yer transgamin pack. but also have say a exe made for linux in general(to be ran by wine). ima see if i can get this wine to run the installer package for the test, if i can.. ima dump yer client like a bad habit, untill it gets WAY better. cause this is bull s*it, u will help a rip off company like TS, as thay feck the wine project for code. pfft.
you best learn a bit more about linux(comunity), b4 u get a company that had been fuxin the linux comunity for a few years now, to help you fux us over, thanks. looks like Ts is trying to get us by the balls, from the looks of this crappy outcome.
HEADS UP CCP! thay will latch onto you like a leech.
i dont like yer waays of doin this ccp. it will blow up in yer face.

why would you want to connect to the test server if you have a fully working client in wine? the test server is only there for the mac and linux betas, but nobody needs to take part in or use those betas, or the associated server, if they have a working version going already. its for testing the client; the server isnt whats being tested so connecting to it with any unofficial/custom port would mean people start reporting bugs that arent there in the official beta, and that would damage the testing process. the only things the official ports have over the others is that patching may be easier, and those tiny little bugs that appear will be dealt with. if thats not enough reason to use the official port then you have no need to connect to the beta server. unless, that is, youre only in there to play with the gm tools and see what its like to fly a titan, and arent testing the client at all..
its not nice to call peoples posts stupid unless you at least understand what youre talking about, and it reflects badly on you.

but, u do it yer way ill do it mine, seems u like to tell me to love it or leave it.
at this pont im just trying to get the wrapper to just play the normal client, so i can atleast get to testing. however its not goin well. I take it, it wont hurt anythign as long as I stick to the same wrapper as the beta. it will just allow me to test on tran for a bit..so i can test..SOME THING.

If you are using Transgaming's Linux client, EVE is installed in "~/.cedega/EVE Online/c_drive/Program Files/CCP/EVE".
There are 2 major problems with EVE on Wine at the moment. I don't know if these are fixed in the TG version but from what I've heard there are way more than just three (I can't run the thing myself to test it without it crashing).
To be clear, the following are Wine issues, not TG's which would be a much longer list right now.
1) PNG images (i.e. from the mini-map browser and in mission briefs) are corrupted and instead show random icon tiles or noise or both. This is at least due to certain combinations of software (NVIDIA drivers?). A probably related problem is that sometimes ship icons are rendered with the ship's base textures transparent, but this is more of a cosmetic issue - the ship models in space are rendered properly.
2) Changing resolutions can be a problem, as some display setups can give improper resolution options to EVE. For instance, I'm running a dual monitor setup using NVIDIA's TwinView, but EVE only sees one resolution option that spans both monitors. Needless to say, it becomes very unresponsive in this mode (and is even worse that this is the default). This can be worked around most of the time by running EVE in a virtual desktop the first time (which supplies standard resolutions to the game) by running "wine explorer /desktop="" eve.exe". Then you switch EVE to full-screen mode, set the resolution you want, set it back to Windowed mode, exit, and the resolution change will stick.
3) I'll toss in a third minor issue, and that is installation. You have to get Wine, MSTTCoreFonts, EVE installed, and at least the Arial font accessible via the "./windows/fonts/" folder (I used sym-links, but that's read-only). An installer script could be made to simplify the process. Or, prepackage the client using winelib.
I can understand CCP wanting to go with Transgaming for reasons of support. A company "dedicated" to maintaining compatibility is better for your customers than relying on the volunteer work of another community. Though, I think Wine could work if CCP opened communications more, and both projects would benefit.

There's 3rd way - CCP can have dedicated developer/dev team to support eve in wine (by making own packages or submitting any needed patches to jit). But i ask to stop whining about wine vs cedega, there're another threads on this subject, and this one is about TG's products. ------- EVE Online + GNU/Linux |

CCP, please fix the server issue. You have a motivated and dynamic community, but if that lasts for such a long time, that will not go.
Although he have some flammers there, the effort to adapt itself to Linux is very appreciated. But, please, correct the test server.

problem is that you cant just start switching out parts of the client because it would damage the test. the full client and test client are different builds, so any bugs you find after splicing together the full client and test wrapper may not exist with the proper test client. doing things like altering bits of the client on your own can lead to a lot of wasted time for the dev team as they try to pin down or reproduce a bug that doesnt (or shouldnt) exist. due to that you wouldnt be able to test anything anyway.
whatever problems anyone has with transgaming, its not the only choice youll have. itll still work in wine, crossover, parallels, and (i think) fusion so your choices arent being limited by ccp going with tg. thats my last word on it anyway.

Dunno if anyone's tried this on a Mac with the integrated GMA950 card, but it's completely useless. I have a MacBook and a Mac Mini, and while they don't run it spectacularly under Windows it's perfectly acceptable.
On both these machines my framerate in station with the Mac client hovers around 5-10. When I undock the screen fills with garbage and I only see flashes of background and objects, and I come close to measuring performance in Seconds Per Frame.
Contrast this with the Crossover install which ran nearly as well as the Windows client sans sound. I gotta say, this has been a big letdown.

Not so long ago i've described problems with text input... dunno it they were caused by cedega or xneur (the one we use on linux, for windows there's punto switcher), maybe it's xneur, but fact that xneur+wine installation runs pretty well disappoints me 'a bit'... Internationalisation is a well known long standing advantage that Wine holds over Cedega. Clipboard cut'n'paste also doesn't work in Cedega while working nicely in Wine.
I presume these issues have carried over to the new packages. I don't think I'll be dropping Wine anytime soon.

First report after installation and testing on two separate machines. Ubuntu 7.04 + nvidia .100.19 drivers on both test machines
1. x2 3800 amd nvidia 7950GT 512meg ram oc, 2 gig ram sata drive Installation fine with caveats posted already regarding directories. Client starts in 10x7 fullscreen. Login successful. changing resolution via escape key works. closing client does NOT screw up X, as it has in the past.
Frame rate is no different to normal cedega installation on this machine. (40-50fps in station, 35-55fps in space.) Character creation screen(s)- no issues. GFX corruption on starting area asteroids. Some stations are also corrupted. This is NOT an issue with normal tranq client+cedega or wine.
2. Second machine: xp2400 amd fx5200 geforce 1 gig ram (system.)
Installation works same as #1. Client hangs at splash screen. No further testing can be done on this box as it crashes with a python error (when launching from command line.)

So very soon (tm) you will be seeing some Dev's in the C C P corp with names like TG xxxx. These are the Transgaming developers.
I will let them introduce themselves to you when they log in.
We have also hired a couple of new developers up here that have Linux experience and expect them to chime in with suggestions as well. They are CCP Sputnik (who works for me in the QA Engineering team) and CCP EinarTh (who works for CCP Explorer in the EVE software group).
We will soon be moving this trial to a larger server and opening it up to more people.

Smooth in space and map. It's 100 fps in windows through boot camp, I imagine similar performance in OS X.

We are shifting things to a new server as the other one was required for some other testing.
Accounts have had most testing roles removed and will be completely closed out in the next couple of days. You will then be able to use you rnormal accounts on the new server as it will have a mirror of TQ (no more than a couple of months old).
Should have sent this out sooner, but I have been sick and not a work, so my apologies for the delay in this information.

Does this mean that everyone will be able to use this new server and get a mac client to test with as there are no special testing roles needed? And that it is a mirror of TQ so everyone can just download the beta client. Please say this is so. Pleaseeeeeeeeeeeee.

Try and make sure that you dont have any programs using the audio device running (XMMS, Xine, Firefox/Opera/Konqueror). You could also try and disable audio in your prefs.ini file. The lsb_release file isnt a showstopper (i had mine running even though i had the same error), but i found that the black screen "freeze" came when EVE couldnt get an exclusive lock on the audio device

Well not having the Beta client in front of me but reading about it has confirmed my fears. First and foremost it is nothing more than the current Cedega+EvE client combo, only packaged nicely in one big lump. The fact that neither Wine nor Cedega can handle SM3 on SM3 capable cards means that Trinity II is an exclusive upgrade to Windows users only as will the DX10 upg. be exclusive to Vista users. Now going on that wihtout the Trinity II benefits, those of which that matter most are the ones that make more use of the GPU are lost to linux users.
I really don't see what the big deal is here other than a .deb/.rpm/.tgz file that is a one step install so to speak. If CCP were serious in their efforts to make this game enjoyable for all they would drop the craptacular Direct X and re-write the entire engine using OpenGL so that every OS and platform can take advantage of the new whiz bang graphics and performance increase. The other option is for Transgaming to actually do something original and astounding and one-up Wine by making their product DirectX 9 compat and SM3 compat. Otherwise this is just a whole bunch of nothing.

Boring!
The new engine is the same on all platforms. The SM3 stuff is just a bit more glossy looks. You won't be losing out unless you consider the 3D visual effects as important.

We are already in talks with Transgaming around the SM3 issue and hope to have good news on that front soon(tm).
While it may not be supported initially Transgaming are hoping to to support it asap and are already developing other parts of their engine to support the other functions that are coming with EVE:Trinity like the improved IO stream (asynchronous).

Hey,
I just wanted to say, to CCP, thank you very, very, very much for this OSX client you're all working on.
EVE has long been the only Windows thing I run, and my PC is starting to get dodgy. I didn't want to stop playing the game, however, and am really glad that CCP is porting this game to OSX. I realize it's alot of work, and I know we all tend to give you guys tons of crap... so just wanted to step back and say thank you for your effort. --- THIS IS MY SIG. I have two accounts - when I fire up a second eve, the framerate on the second one drops below usable.
A question to those who are lucky beta testers: does transgaming port cover multi-accounts? I don't care about eye-candy, I do care if framerates will f***up missions and stuff ^^

Ok. SO my quesiton is this - If they are making a 'mac' client is it going to be tied to the gui or run on the underlying OS? Reason being is that mac os is FreeBSD with a stupid gui so in theory any client made to run on mac should be able to run on a FreeBSD system.....
That would bring joy to me and be the absolute only benefit mac will have done for the world.

Not exactly true... it actually works the other way around. Something works for linux or BSD - can be recompiled TO the mac. This is from Wikipedia:
"Mac OS X is based on UNIX, most software packages written for BSD or Linux can be recompiled to run on it. Projects such as Fink, MacPorts and Pkgsrc provide pre-compiled or pre-formatted packages. Since version 10.3, Mac OS X has included X11.app, Apple's version of the X Window System graphical interface for Unix applications, as an optional component during installation."
And yes - OS X is BASED on Unix... however - the NUMEROUS changes to the code would really make what you are proposing not quite possible. Willing to be proven wrong however.
The good news though? They are working on a linux client as well - there is documentation somewhere as to which versions will be supported.

Think about it a bit. Full games like Eve don't use the desktop GUI at all. What they need is 3D hardware rendering access. With which they then draw their own GUI. There is no getting round this driver requirement in any sensible manner.
To answer your question, if FreeBSD has the required 3D drivers available then you will have no problems running Eve via Wine. Wine's source auto-build system is superb! There is also prebuilt FreeBSD version of Wine.

Have fun.

I've played eve under another Wine Client for OSX, Works however there are a few glitches. I'm concerned performance won't be that great. We might crash or get booted when there is too much going on. I guess we have to wait and see.

O_o
I do hope the public release will offer the following (OS X 10.5):
- waaaaaay better performance (currently getting 50-75% LESS fps under OS X compared to Bootcamp/XP) - fix for sound bug - People to shoot ;-P (ow, could that be because of Multiplicity?)
Seriously, the framerate is a serious issue, I don't even want to think about going into fleetbattles with this kind of fps (15-30 at most).

What type of mac are you using? If you are on a MacMini - I would completely understand. :P

I understand your disappointment then!
Hoping for a good experience on my MacBookPro when it is live tomorrow... crossing my fingers.
Might it be a difference in the servers? Have you tried connecting to the test server while in windows via bootcamp to see if the performance is the same there? I have had great performance as well under bootcamp on the live servers - but I would love to have a reason to 100% rid myself of having windows on my mac - as that is the only reason I keep it around. BUT - if performance is unacceptable - like you are seeing...

Edited by: Darahk J''olonar on 05/11/2007 16:31:57 I guess the question is will the new wrapped client be any better than the current Cedega+Windows client that folks are running now? I have been a long time subscriber of Cedega and if there is nothing notable I would like to just keep things as is so as to not bork my current installation.
Edit: Just read the official client notes and the Linux version does NOT support ATI yet Cider does. What is even more disturbing is that I can get EvE to play fine on an older laptop using Cedega and it has an ATI 9800 mobile chipset. Am I missing something here?

Good point! However unfortunately I was unable to patch the Bootcamp client to connect to Multiplicity so I'll just wait until tomorrow.
Like you said, if performance is unacceptable, Bootcamp stays (which would be a major no-no)

Edited by: Ce Lau on 06/11/2007 07:49:06 It's not even the discspace (that WIndows gobbles up at an alarming rate), but more the mere fact that M$ resides on my shiny Apple ;-)
Like you, I only keep Bootcamp around for Eve. Let's pray today will see the end of that as I will quite happily slam ERASE and end an era of Bootcamp ;-P

Don't install the official client. From all reports it breaks any existing Cedega installations.
I run Eve in Wine - I couldn't get the official client to load or even give an error message, so it looks like I'll be sticking with that for the time being.
As for the ATi thing, I can only assume it's because ATi Linux drivers are in such a bad state and CCP/TransGaming don't want to have to deal with all the issues that ATi/AMD are ignoring.

Actually the new AMD/ATI drivers are fantastic and offer performance equal to or better than the nVidia binary blobs on high end hardware. As for the fubaring of current Cedega installs yes I was well aware of that and won't even bother trying. I am currently running Cedega+EvE without any hiccups same goes for Wine+EvE. Until I start reading about good experiences and painless installs and stable gameplay I am staying away from this wrapped mess.
