Hi, I'm pretty new to Eve. Looking for whatever the best cruiser is. Looking for a combat cruiser that is good for missions and can handle some PVP as well. Any ideas? I have looked at the ship fitting links but I haven't seen anything that has a good overview of all the ships and what would be better in different situations.
thanks in advance.

Edited by: Cpt Branko on 01/09/2007 00:19:28 Let's see. Thorax & Rupture for gun gankage. A Thorax is somewhat more damaging, but a Rupture is just easier to fit (ACs ftw!) and doesn't exactly have to sit on top of someone to kill it.
Arbitrator & Vexor for drones - wouldn't know which one to pick out there. Both very good ships.
The Caracal has a few niche roles (primarily, a beautiful anti-interceptor / frig / anything small platform, but struggles against cruisers).
A Stabber can be used out of webrange if you have good skills and want to stick T2 guns on it, also a veery fast little thing. It's a survivable little bugger.
Edit: no idea about the Maller and the Omen, but from what I hear, they use lasers

Even though Blackbirds and Caracals are able to perform they should not be on the list... - I'm a nice guy!!

Best overall? Let's be honest, it's the Caracal. Rupture, Thorax and Vexor have their uses and are great in skilled hands, but nothing beats a Caracal with its 0-192Km range. Basically there is not one mission (within its scope i.e. up to easy L3's) and one PVP fight you have to shy away (just stay at range).
And of course, as you can see on EVE-TV, dampeners pwnzrs :-P

The Caracal is by far the best PvE cruiser up to level 3 missions. As he is also a good anti-support ship in PvP you will not be disapointed.

If u r looking for something best all-round and cruiser sized, train up for an Ishtar.
Otherwise there are a lot of T1 cruisers on par with one another, and others have already stated them.

My honest answer is: THERE IS NO BEST!
All ships have their advantages in certain situations, certain fits can do better in some situations, and even pilot skills come into the equation (never try to fly a Maller with almost 0 gunnery/engineering and all your points in drones).
There are few absolute answers in EVE. You have to figure these things out for yourself.
Anyways, a rundown of the cruisers I know enough about to comment.
Vexor: Drone boat, armor tanked, often fitted with 1,600mm plate and 4 light neutron blasters, though NOS/energy neut builds are common. You can pull off a lot of highslot setups with the drone damage provided by this boat. Combat ship of choice for Gallente spec ops starters. Short version: DRONES! DRONES! DRONES! BRAINS!
Arbitrator: See above
Thorax: The combat ship of choice for Gallente soldier spec starters. 5 medium guns, good drone bay, can do awesome DPS in a gank setup (5 medium neutron blasters, 3 magstabs, and almost 0 tank). MWD bonus, nice for PvP. Still good for PvE though-mount 5 150 or 200mm railguns (no duals, they suck), and let the 5 medium drones fly. Overall a PvP oriented boat, slot layout gives some versatility (and it CAN put out a better tank than the Vexor). Short version: Hybrid guns... hybrid guns everywhere... so many hybrid guns...
Celestis: PvP gang support boat. Sensor damps, and a lot of them. This just about covers this ship. Don't fly it because, "OMG GALLENTE SHIP WITH MISSILES". This is actually a weakness, since bonuses are split between weapon systems. I'd rather it had all missiles or all turrets than a mix. I hate Roden Shipyards. Short version-only fly it if your gang needs sensor damps.
Exequror: Can be used as a mini-industrial ship for newbies, since it can fit 4 Miner IIs, mix of mining/defense drones, and has good cargo bay for when you don't have a hauler, or BE a mini-hauler with its large, expandable cargo bay. Also can be used for a poor-man's logistics ship (remote armor repping your buddies. I in fact have a few of these decked out). Oh, and if you are the logistics boat, you warp out last. Never run before your buddies. I made this mistake once in PvP and I dearly regret it. Short version: Decent miner, can haul quite a bit of cargo, and can be used to rep your friends.
Caracal: Missile-spamming L2 mission-runner. This about sums it up for newbies (though I don't discount what experienced players can do with them in PvP-I've seen it first-hand). Short version: MISSILES! LOTS AND LOTS OF MISSILES!
Auguror: Cap From Nowhere! It remote cap Xfers more capacitor than it uses to do so with its nice "70% in remote cap Xfer array capacitor use). Short version: Get a Guardian already.
Megathron: Awesome sniper, awesome mega neutron blaster boat (if you can fit them at least), good drone bay, looks dead-sexy. Short version: I know, this isn't exactly a cruiser. ------------------------------ One more soldier off to war... And one Velator in my hangars. |

The tourney is in no way, shape or form, typical PvP. You seem to forget that in regular PvP, your enemies can often know where you're coming in (such as a gatecamp). And I've done the easy L3s with a Vexor-it is not the sole domain of the Caracal. And also-though its missiles can reach 192km, can its sensors without heavy sensor boosting? And doesn't this take your primary tanking/sensor damping slots? Also finally: you've gotta be within at least 24km to warp scramble. This severely limits your range if you're going solo.
Sensor dampers do 'pwn though, you're right on that. ------------------------------ One more soldier off to war... And one Velator in my hangars. |

Don't use your mission ship for pvp. It's just not worth it. You'll always need a backup ship to make money, if you lose it in pvp, you could end up being back in a frigate if you're a rookie.
That also reduces the need for a ship that can both pvp well and run missions. You're often not looking for the same characteristics in ships for pvp'ing as you would be for missionrunning.

I'd give it to the vexor, as it's the only cruiser I've come across that can top my close range Moa setup 1v1(non ewar of course).

I agree the tourney is not really pvp in Eve. But I wouldn't mind that environment, have some belts that have a high value, but have a warp phenomenon. I hate that scramblers are a requisite in almost all areas of real pvp in this game. It makes long range setups not viable.
