I am an eve newbie. I started my trial about one month ago; I am now on a full account. I joined a corp that is very friendly to newbies of all stripes. We were of course almost immediatly wardeced :)

Now this is not a complaint about wardecs, nor is it a complaint about empires wars. Both are fully within the rules of the game. I was pleasantly surprised that instead of panic, wailing, and complaints about how unfair it all was, for the most part it was met with a "oh well, better start stockpiling ammo again." The more experienced players started to instruct the new players in wartime disciple (how not to be an easy target), how to outfit our frigs, etc. I have had the opportunity fly in several fleet opps now. We've had some losses, we've killed some ships. These are my observations so far:


1) If you are interested in PvP, start flying PvP now. Fly ships that you can easily replace. If you are a newbie this means frigs with T1 fittings. Even for someone running level 1 missions they are dirt cheap and easy to replace. Dont think that you need to wait for 3 million, 5 million, 10 million skill points before you can compete. If you can fly a frig and fit a warp disruptor you are usefull. If you can fit a microwarpdrive at the same time you are even more usefull. The experience you gain from practical combat is worth as much or more as the skill points you stockpile.

2) Get some friends. There is safety in numbers. Join an active corp that runs frequent opps. Watch the more experienced players, listen to your FC.

3) Fly smart, fear nothing. Dont think its all about how uber your ship is or the fact that you have tech 42 faction double officer secret squirel omega modules. Newbie ships can kill a battleship, you just need to fit the right, fly them hard, and bring enough of them.

4) Turn off the effects and audio. It keeps the lag monster away.

5) Have a little perspective. Its a game. Its also a pvp intensive game. Its almost certain at some point you will come into conflict with other players. Be ready to do your best to defend yourself. Trying to avoid conflict just lets them shoot you in the back.

Anyway, thats the view from here, one month in. So far this is coming together as a great game.

See this is what i keep trying to explain to my corp mate. He keeps going on about how he wants to max his skills and have a ton of isk so he can T2 fit his T2 ship so that he is able to go in and kill everyone. What he doesnt get though is that pvp is about 80% combat experience and 20% skillpoints and without the former hes just gonna end up with a rather expensive T2 wreck on his hands.

The big shame is that if he just grabbed a t1 crusier and dived in he would have great fun :)
