It's "die-moss", named after the Greek god of dread and the smaller of Mars' two moons.

Dei+mos (dē'mōs, dā'-, dī'mŏs) n. The satellite of Mars that is second in distance from the planet.
Deimos (dē'mōs, dā'-) The satellite of Mars that is second in distance from the planet.
It is not pronounced DEEMOS, simple as. It is pronounced DIEMOSS, DEEMOHS, or DAYMOHS. Now just shut the hell up.
Quote: i'll leave you with one last thought. if it was pronounced die. why is it spelt dei?
Know much German? Die is "dee"; dei is "die". Your rules work - mostly - for the English language. Unfortunately, Deimos is not an English word. Applying rules for foreign words doesn't work unless you apply the right rules.

Decided to do a search on the correct pronunciation on this....because I have no life.... I found multiple sites and while the majority do use it sounding as DEE- , some did indeed have it sounding like DYE- , a couple even had it sounding as DAY- sooo....

There are many things that jay can't do, you shouldn't hold it against him.
However.
We're talking about the pronunciation of someone from durham. Just be thankful he's not from ashington, or IRC would never stop with requests for perms.

You should note that this is NOT an English word, therefore English pronunciation rules don't apply. Of course if you say that this word has been taken over by the English language you could argue that it can be pronounced DEE MOS. Then again all Gallente ship names originate from Greek mythology so why not pronounce it the original way.

in greek/latin/whatever dei (which is a word in itself) it's pronounced more like "day" so if you go down the latin route (which you can't because it's cout of context) you still wouldnt call it diemos :)

Feel free to explain the abundance of websites that state the pronunciation can be "die-moss", then. Let me know when you can.
... wait, you can't. Honestly, just give it up. I know you really, really, really want to be right, but you're really, really, really not.
Originally by: ElCoCo Take it from a greek guy... tt's pronounced like dee.
Take it from someone who's not friends with Jay and inclined to back him up, someone who knows how to read, and someone who has better than a fifth grade education: it's not just pronounced "dee". Nice try, fratboy. Shut up.

Well, take it from a second Greek guy whose not affiliated with anyone: it's DEE-Moss. In Greek we have 7 'I's, so we know how to distinguish :P

Honestly, I'd just prefer we call it daymohs. Sounds better. But to bring this full circle, my objection wasn't to the use of deemohs, but to the original poster's declaration that diemoss was wrong. It's not. Neither is daymohs, or deemohs. Just different pronunciations that are - get this - all. perfectly. fine. It's how language works. Not this ridiculous bs Jay's trying to pull with "ONLY ONE PRONUNCIATION!" and "OMG LOOK AT THESE ENGLISH RULES" when f'ing everyone knows English is the language that follows its own rules the least. So, yeh. Mostly I'm just annoyed at the idiot that thinks he's really, really, really smart and... isn't. Sorry, Jay. Hope it doesn't hurt your f-ee-lings.
