The more i play eve the smaller the universe seems to become.
Since I have started playing this game the eve universe has gotten allot smaller. Due to things such as wtz, clone jumping, and jump drives, and more recently jump portals.
All of these things have been added for the sake of better gameplay, but the end effect is that they have made the eve universe seem allot smaller.
Ambulation will put the universe to scale, but that still will not effect how big the universe appears to someone piloting their ship.
Wtz, clone jumping, and jump drives made the universe smaller by removing the time sink that it took to move from one place to another. But time sinks are not a good thing, and i am glad they are all here.
Exploration made the universe seem a little bigger by adding more content in each solarsystem. But only if you were looking for it, for someone who likes to pvp the universe still seems small.
In kali (i.e. rev1 for the noobies) they opened up alot of new regions. And it really had no effect on how big the universe was perceived.
I think that CCP should work on adding more content to each system to make it seem bigger. Exploration brought a little bit, but has not brought enough to make much of a difference. And ambulation will make it seem a little bigger, but once you are out in your ship I dont think the universe will seem any larger.
I think that one way it could be done it to introduce a system where planets, belts, moons, etc are hidden by default. And the players must find them via exploration, but the difference would be that these items are permanent, and once you find them the icon would appear on overview, right click, etc.
This would make it so that if you go into unknown territory you have to explore it to find everything in it.
It could also be setup so that the more you find the harder it is for you to find the next object (especially with belts), so going into a virgin system you would find the planets and a few belts quickly (depending on the system), but the more you find the harder it would be to ping down the next one. So systems could have belts/moons that would literally take months to scan down
It could also be setup so that the stuff that is easier to find is less valauable. And the harder stuff gets to find the more valauble it gets, belts that have teken months to find would have better ores and spawns than belts you can find withing an hour of enterening system. Same could apply to moons
This could also be used with exploration sites, if you are scanning for a site from a easy to find planet you will get a 3/10 plex, but if you scan down a plex from a planet that took you months to find your reward could be a 9/10 plex.

Yes it would be a nice idea.
Here comes the but.
Alas all that would happen as I can see will be a few explorers exploring. then bookmarking belts etc - then selling the book marks. which would lag up the servers again.
But an interesting concept anyhow.

Step one - nerf forum whiners and unbeleivers in Douglas Adams mechanics of Server operations. Step two - plug Serenity into Tranquility through several "new" jump gates. Step three - Write a book entitled "How to conquor Serenity for Boblets" Step four - 0.0 has now doubles in space due to BoBs emmigration

CCP could easily prevent this, make the ship you have to scan from to find any of the good **** a science vessel. And make it so its slow, weak, and cannot cloak, and ******* huge when being probed. Then also prevent bookmarks from being made in or near the plexes.
That makes it so everyone can find the easy stuff themselves, and if you want to find the good stuff it will take along time in sitting what is essentially a freighter with a scanner.

How about this new warping system to make the universe bigger? It is better than click one button and warp to 0km.
I suggest Warp Sequence.
To initiate a warp to an overview object, a pop-up menu with a keypad of 12 keys appears. The keypad has 0-9, * and # keys. Depending on the warp distance, the client will ask the user to mimic a random sequence between 5 to 10 keys to initiate a warp.
Players can still warp to 0km and bookmarks will still be useless. The universe will be bigger. --------- Technica impendi Caldari generis. Pax Caldaria!

Why not close down china servers since no one is playing there anyways and use that cluster to expand this universe ?

Eve needs to be larger. There should be constelations with virtually no-one around at all. It should be possiblein some areas to mine for days without seeing anyone.

Edited by: wictro on 02/09/2007 02:37:30 Edited by: wictro on 02/09/2007 02:32:23 i like the idea, that you have to scan down the planets / belts / moons / stations / etc.
and that once scanned, they stay on your overview.
the bookmark problem will arise soon after.
i can't think anything to prevent this from happening at the moment.
what are boomarks currently used for ?
-safespots -POS -your own secret secure can -exploration sites -snipe/spy locations -?
is there more use? its 05:20am and my head doesen't work no more.
is it possible to get rid of bookmark copying / selling, and still have em around? and still to be able to pass em to a friend?
there is no exploration in eve, if you don't count the random and disappearing exploration sites.
this is a issue that would shake the foundations of eve if changed. and an issue that needs long long time to be troughly tought.
i like immersion, i like exploration, but i have no idea how to make it work.
i think if found something that i can ponder in the wee hours ;)
either the space is too big = you wont see anyone
or too small = all space occupied, thus known, maps done.
and if the space would be endless, there would not be any players to compete for regions, as theres allways more to prosper in.
i think i'll hit the hay now.
EDIT: i lost the point while thinking. more variety in systems would do the trick. now they are all the same.
it would be an addon to current system, that evolves from player actions. that is a strategic game, a battle of organisation, wits and will.
i like both.
but i <3 eve as it is too, and i don't wan't to change it, as it's marvellous right now.
i presume eve getting deeper and containing more more variety of gameplay in future.
and for god's sake, to keep it's harsh approach on things.

How about you stop posting.
If you guys think the universe is so small you've never tried to traverse it in a freighter. The universe is huge compared to the highway-laced yulai-centered eve universe of old.

The outer edges of the eve universe could be spread much thinner similar to the manner in which galaxys are spread. There could be warp jumps thats take minutes to transverse rather than the almost instantaneous jumping we have now. Some explorations missions could be oraganized in a similar manner to agents are now and yet it could take days of real time to get to one destination. You dont have to change the existing eve universe to do it. The central hubs and existing 0.0 could be kept the way we see it now.

Combined with the fact that of all the new systems they added only a couple of percentage has access to them.
75-80% of the population is still in the same number of systems in High Sec that was setup ages ago. Crowded == feels small.

Edited by: Jenny Spitfire on 02/09/2007 07:39:22 What is the matter with you guys? I am suggesting a good idea about making the universe bigger.
If you think about it when you want to warp, the player will have to enter vectors, setup the ship, etc. that is now done transparently through aligning. My suggestion gives the player the immersion of performing warp preparation. Warping would be a player skill because the pilot will need to skillfully remember the random sequence.
If the player is not that skillful, the warp sequence will be initiated after three failed attempts. You will still get warp to 0km but warping will be a bit slower.
Overall, I think it is good for trading and combat because nobody can run away easily with a click of a button. It would require skill to do that. It would also stop macro-mining problems that most of you who are so against with. --------- Technica impendi Caldari generis. Pax Caldaria!

cool idea
as soon as he limits the planet fluff with alliance sovereignty the whole idea goes crash
any more limiting factors like that and you can start enjoying eve with just a handful of friends cause it will never grow when you force everyone into an alliance
this creates super players from alliance leaders just because of how the mechanics work and should be avoided at all costs ____ __ ________ _sig below_ devs and gms cant modify my sig if they tried! _lies above_ CCP Morpheus was here Morpheus Fails. You need colors!! -Kaemonn [yellow]Kaem |

Jenny, I personally see some advantages to that idea of yours, but I'll just say this: most people won't support it simply because it makes their brains hurt and their lives harder. They'd much rather have the quick and easy plan. As a matter of fact, I'm against your idea for the same reason.
