Mweh, video compression and stuff drive down the quality.

Yep.
It is compression borking the quality but as these things go it is not too bad.
If it wasn't compressed most people probably would not have the bandwidth to watch more than a slide show.

Gotta have to set yourself 3m from the experts.
Seriously, that stuff is encoded, compressed and sent to thousands of people.. of course it's not the same quality as artifically rendered game graphic.

Actually, for a streamed internet broadcast, it's very good quality.

Edited by: niroku on 03/09/2007 05:04:34 a problem here is that as as far as i'm aware, the lowest resolution eve will run (unless you force it somehow) is 800x600 . the broadcast for evetv is being filmed at 720x576 PAL resolution so unfortunately the ingame footage has to be scaled down to fit this resolution and becomes softer detail wise . while this is fine for most shots, things like zooming out and having more than 10 ships per side become a real problem .
eve wasn't designed for tv coverage so the crew are improvising as best they can .
to make up for this as much as possible, the broadcast is streamed at 720x576, as high as it will go . a live streams are usually something like 400x300, so i am thankful for this .
if there was the budget to film in HD (which is very expensive equipment to hire because i am very doubtful domestic hardware is used) the quality of the in game shots would be much higher and of course you would be able to make out smaller details such as player names so much easier and the ability to fit more than 10 ships on the screen would be a more realistic possibility .
this is not a problem related to how evetv is encoded/compressed . the encoding method used is actually very good for a realtime stream .
hm, first post ... i need a sig :3

eh? my stream at times seemed very heavily compressed, the names/ship types would break up in to unreadable blocks basically.

it's possible the stream supported lower bitrate spread to cater for slower/less stable connections, not sure .
was pretty consistantly watchable aside from the occasional stall .

The stream is:
a) 500kbps, low bitrate b) Constant Bitrate, which means it can't allocate extra bits to high-motion scenes and lower bits to low-motion scenes c) Encoded in realtime, which means the encoder is using crappy settings d) WMV9, a mediocre codec.
I'm going to post a download of the first day of the tournament soon, and I've done some massive postprocessing on it to hopefully make the quality a bit more bearable. Its about 1/3 the size of the WMV version because of better compression

DS saves the day.
I've been watching it on the website and it's really not very good. Can't see names, and the ticker makes my browser whimper.

It's easy to do better if you have the time to dedicate.
As it is, this is Iceland. Prices for equipment are higher, then there is the time to set things up, not to mention the expertise to know what you're doing. The crew here have a way of doing it that works for them.
Since Dark Shikari is obviously awesomeness embodied, he can solve problems for everything. Whilst I appreciate what you're doing, I have to respond to your beating of them and explain why this is how things are.

I watch it on my TV through the PC and it mostly looks okay.
Considering it's free, you can't really complain. Well you could, but it would be pretty crappy.

Edited by: Ifni on 03/09/2007 14:13:29 For those that are interested, I'll post some information about the encoding PC's as I know it:
We were using two Osprey encoding cards, but disabled one of the feeds when there were buffering problems. The pipeline out of the building is a standard business account so has a predetermined bandwidth with no speed limiting, as you would normally get with ADSL or such. Any buffering problems come as a result of excessive usage by others on the main line out of Iceland, or at some point along the pipe, closer to the viewer, after the feed is uploaded to the distribution server.
The PC's are dedicated to the task, and do nothing but the encoding. I think, for a while, the low bitrate broadcast PC was also running IRC for the team here, but with the low bitrate cast being disabled, this is inconsequential for the moment.
As it was, one of the cards was supplied by the company that supplies the cameras and lights, but since there isn't much call for this kind of digitisation in the country, it was impossible to get a second card. The second card we were using was, if my memory serves, ordered months back, due to the trouble with getting stuff protectively insured and shipped to Iceland.
If you would like to know any more, I can poke Xyliana to provide more details on the setup we're using.

I believe it's fine. On Friday was bit better quality but we shouldn't complain :D
It's live broadcast over the internet having tens of thousands viewers.
If EVE had 100,000 more subscribers we may had HD Satellite broadcast in 1080p :)
Btw on 2 different machines over the same internet line I had different quality on the live broadcast. On my PC the quality was 5 times better than the laptop.
My PC consists of Q6600 (Quad core), 4GB RAM and 8800GTX while the laptop a Sempron 3500+ with 2GB RAM, and an ATI 1100M with 128MB RAM.

Edited by: Mad Axe on 03/09/2007 15:51:17 Thats becouse i wuld assume if you buy something such as a Q-core and a 8800GTX you wuld have a 21" or 24" LCD monitor, becouse you dont want to play at 1280x1024 while on your labtop you wuld have something like 15.4" or 17.1" at most, so on a smaller screen and its less streched to mach the screen

what are the chances of the Eve-TV crew releasing a non edited version compressed much more favorably (2-4mb in WM9 or Xvid is usueally pretty damn good) to be avail for direct download?

I imagine that would depend on the quality of the footage being recorded on HDD. If the quality is higher, then it may be possible, but surely you would agree that the cost of having gigabytes of data for download, to as many people who want it, would be prohibitive?

Not really .. you can seed it via torrent for maybe 24 hours, think that should solve the problem.

torrent should be fairly painfree. guessing the bandwidth costs would be less than that of the flash player
