Around 4 mil SP? Lowish SP BS's are still good for ratting/missions. I am close to 8mil SP now and don't fly BS much for PvP, choosing T2 frigs over them. But BS's are money makers though and though.

I don't recall exactly but I think it was after a couple of months in game, maybe around 2m SP. I'm now at 7m SP and flying a faction/t2 fitted CNR. Pretty much a PVE *****, would be useless in PVP with one I guess.

With Mrski it was around 3.5 mil. Even before I had large guns :D. I only regretted it when lost a few in pfp.
With a gallente alt it was @ 2mil. And those 2 mil were in drones so flying a domi isn't as skill intensive.
But Mrski REALLY wanted a battleship. And now (13mil SP)he can really fly one.

Edited by: Zhett Haukes on 03/09/2007 18:38:10 I just trained Large Projectile lvl 1 in preparation for getting into a t1 tempest. Not touching the ship until I have the gunnery skills all at at least IV and the BS skill at IV though. I won't be flying it much though, probably just for a slightly more relaxing gate camp than the hurricane.
I have 7.5mil SP

I think I trained gallente bs to lvl 4 shortly after the tier3 bs's came out. I got one glymps of a hyperion and wanted to be in it. So I decided that It's time that I at least step foot in a bs, and a hyperion was the one. This was at 28 or 29mil sp. After feeling how slow and clumsy bs's felt a fully t2 fitted hyperion later(best named large blasters, couldn't do t2) I quickly realized that battleships where not my style. Now I only fly dominixes for ammoless deep space ratting.

2.5M SP I've done a couple of lvl4s in it, and it hold up well enough. I basically use it as a slow but tough BC for missions. You can fly a ship as soon as you can train the skills for it, you just probably aren't getting all the potential out of it.

I trained it when I had around 2 or 3 million SP. I've got all the relevant T2 skills now, but I hardly fly my BS except for finishing radar/magneto sites quickly. They are just too slow and vulnerable, like that other poster stated.
It's weird, I went straight for BS when I started this game, then to Amarr recons, and now I'm training for dictors. Soon I'll be trained to use T2 pods. -----------

Over 7 mil SP now, and I still haven't trained for a BS. Now there's a former corpie I know....he went right for the BS, after supposedly doing lots of training for corp managment.... I don't think anyone's managed to keep up with how many BSs he's managed to lose so far. (even lost a few in high-sec) Yes, he does get laughed at when he loses one. Last I checked, he couldn't use large guns, although he may have remedied that by now.
For the amusement of all around you, do not train support skills before flying Battleships. _______________________________

2.5mil, after I lost my Myrmidon to packet-loss / line drop during a level 3. Borrowed the money I needed extra to te base insurance payout from a corp mate to buy a Domi and have been flying it since. Level 3's are a breeze with sentry drones so paying back the 30mil debt only took a few nights (the shark charged me 5mil interest!).
Most of my SP are in drones, so the Domi is great for PvE. Wouldn't take her anywhere near PvP though - I'm switching back to Raxes and Tristans for that, mainly because they're a damn sight cheaper to replace.

yeah, I'm probably a big exeption in this case. cant remember exactly but thin I was a bit over 1 year in game when i trained up battleship 1, jsut to try out a battleship for a change. borrowed a phoon from a corpmate, but didnt enjoy it a lot(poor skills for bs, lvl 1 heavy drones, large turrets and cruise missiles 4)
Dont make the mistake of thinking I had poor overal skills though, had pretty good support skills(3 or 4 in gunnery, missile and drone suppport skills, fitting 5 for most, cap skills 4) cruise missiles 4 was there for stealth bombers
anyway I was able to fly t2 fitted intys and assault frigates before I even had lvl1 in cruisers. tried some cruisers at some point, didnt like them a lot. Only flew battlecruisers in lvl3 missions if the firepower of af/inty was not really good enough to break tanks on some rats. But found cyclone to be too slow and cumbersome. were no tier2 bc yet at that point. hurricane is kind of fun.
think I was around 1.5 years in agme with 20M sp or so wehn I tried a maelstrom(with better skills, lvl3 large turret and lvl3 bs, support skills all 4 or 5). it was the complete opposite of the frigates I loved to fly. Slow, about as agile as a pregnant cow on a frozen lake. But it's tank and firepower were jsut awesome(compared to frigates wet paper tank and poking stick for weapons) and I absolutly loved it, just like I love flying dessies and frigates.
T2 cruisers and battlecruisers are fun too. But t1 cruisers/bc just plain suck.

I didn't fly mine until I was only at like 2.5M.
Now at over 20M SP, I feel I am finally flying it properly. I have Caldari BS5 and Gallente to 3 (4M in drones makes me privvy to the Domi). --

Edited by: Cpt Branko on 05/09/2007 16:16:54 Hmmm. I've got about 6.8-6.9M SP currently and still can't fly a BS. I can fly a BC reasonably effectively (no T2 guns yet, which is what's currently being trained) and small ships (frigs & AFs) quite effectively. The plan is, after training T2 mediums, brush up my gunnery and support skills a notch upwards to feel comfortable in BCs and cruisers and then possibly train the BS skill. According to my calculations, basically, it's going to be about 65-70 days before I'll be comfortable flying one, if I decide to go for it, which I probably won't.
I can already see myself setting 'battlecruisers V' after instead of 'minmatar battleship I'.

I trained minnie BS from level 1 to 5 all at once around 21 mil points.
Right after that I did large projectile turret 1 through 5 finishing it up right now actually.
There is no right way to do it. Although, I think avoiding T2 stuff and going straight to BS for mission running is the most profitable way to get started.

Originally by: Galan Undris Yep, when did you feel ready?
Counting close to 9M SP and still can't fly a single battleship. I have it planned after I get t2 projectiles, t2 medium drones and Energy System Op V. So probably around 10.5M SP before I get the book.
Well the question is ambigious. When did I feel ready for what? there's 2 sides to this, ready for pve level 4 missions? or pvp? Many people will tell you that you need 10 mil to fly a BS, and being that I only have 6 now, it's really not true for level 4 missions. PvP? yes, but level 4 missions, 4-5 million sp in the right areas and you're ready for level 4 missions.
There's no comparison to the amount of money you make in level 4s to level 3s. Even running level 4s slowly nets you more money than 3s quickly.
So at about 3-4 months you should probably be in a BS doing level 4 missions. The 1st half a month training learning skills to 4. Then basic fitting skills to V, Setup your Tank to Tech II stuff, Dmg mod IIs, and Cap Upgrades IIs. You're pretty much set after that. Take your time getting tech II larges, it's nice for the missions and will make you run it quicker, but it's far from a neccessity. What is a neccessity is a good guide about the missions, knowledge of the mission > better equipment.
As for pvp, a new player shouldn't think about a BS for pvp. not so much because of skills, but because it's expensive. There's a bunch of good smaller ships that are suited to pvp -- Frigates (punishers, rifters, etc.), Cruisers (arbitrators, thoraxes, etc.). It's probably better to practice on those, lose a few, learn some lessons, by the time you actually get tech II large guns you'll probably be pretty seasoned and ready to take the big boy out.

Now at 30 mil skillpoints, only lost two of them so far, one of those was due to lag.

The question was general, asking what you did, not what I should do (I've already made my mind up on that one).
I do however not plan to do any missions anywhere, a BS would be mostly for speeding up ratting in safe 0.0 and fleet stuff.
Originally by: sableye I;d say at 9 mil skillpoints your rdy for it unless them skillpoints are all in industry/science.
Not in industry/science, but 2M in learning and 1.5M in BC 5 though

I have the skills to fly one, I actually broke 4Million with that skill no less ;)
However, it's not a ship that I'd feel safe flying in anything other than a well equipped gang, simply due to the lack of support skills I have for it. Right now though, I'm sitting pretty in my Drake, debating that final plunge into tactical shield manipulation V and BC V.

At about 18 million skill points, I had wanted a battleship. I was used to flying the myr and loved it a lot. I trained to BS 3 for the dominix and then started comparing their signatures vs tanking, damage capabilities, etc etc. Well, after a fit of fidling, I have decided to go for level 5 BC instead of moving up my BS skills.
I have no problems with level 4 mission in the myr what-so-ever. But, with only 5 heavies, the dominix still calls me!... ha ha ha
But, will not plan to raise BS skills, probably for a year or so more. If I fly something, I want to gly it well.
