So, I just got my brand new Battlecruiser, and it comes with a drone bay (hurray, drones!) However, I am contemplating the best use for my drones.
Would it be best just to go for damage dealing drones? This seems somewhat iffy to me. It may only increase my overall firepower by 10%, but it has the benefit of being useful at all ranges. That makes it good for those close flying frigates. I could always counter the frigates with a stasis web (and shoot them myself) but that takes away from the time in dealing with the real threats. Also, is there any way to send you drones after enemy frigates while you take care of the larger things? And would these be useful in PVP? They seem like too little of use to matter, and I doubt they have the firepower to take out tackling ships.
Perhaps armor repair drones? I do Use armor tanking, and having repair drones would save me some capacitor, but is it enough to matter? Also would they be able to serve as a replacement for my armor repair unit. Would these be any use in PvP, or would they be my enemies' first targets.
Perhaps Electronic warfare drones? This seems like it could be useful in PVP, as more time my enemy is jammed, the less he is shooting me. But I dont really know how effective these drones would be in this capacity. Do they jam effectively, or for any large ammount of time? Would multiple drones jam him more often, or is there a diminishing return to thier effectiveness? Would these drones help defend me against fire and forget missles, or enemy drones?
I could also use the drones that effectively lower my opponent's range. Stack a couple of those drones on him and he might not be able to hit anything beyond 15 km. But I dont know if thier range decreasing effect stacks with eachother, or my own tracking disruptors. Also would this be effective in missions where I am often fighting multiple enemies?
Assisting tactical drones? I dont think this a in-game category, but its what I call the drones with things like target painters, and webifiers. These seem like nice drones as they make whatever I am targeting easier to hit. This combined with my own on-board targeters would really help me land the shots. But do the benefits of my drone's Target painter stack with my own target painter? Would multiple webifier and targeting drones have effects that stack?
Mining drones! I could use these to strip the armor right off my enemies. Ok well, maybe not.
As you can see, there is many types of drones available, and Im not sure which would be the most useful to use for either missions, or PvP. Is there any drones you like to use, or suggest? And why do you use/suggest that type of drone?

If you would tell me what size your dronebay is, I could be more specific.
Damage drones - They help shoot down ships that your guns can't hit. The most popular choice and good in both PVP and PVE.
Armor repair drones - They repair very little HP per cycle and can only repair other people (read: you can't repair yourself with your own drones). Generally should be avoided unless you're using a logistics cruiser.
EW drones - A set of ECM drones will break your target's lock fairly frequently (once every 2-3 minutes at least), which will be useful in PVP. If you're looking to permanently and reliably disable enemy ships though, you'll want to get your EW in the form of modules.
Target painting drones - Useful for torpedo and missile users, letting their missiles do full damage against small targets. Damage drones may be more effective. Useless for gunships.
Webifier drones - Useful if you lack fitting room for webifiers. Bulky, and you need at least 3-4 for them to be effective, so they're really only an option for battleships.

So, for a Drake I take it you are either using damage dealers or painters to deal with the smaller craft you encounter and have trouble getting rid of? ____________ Guides I like: Mining Guide V2.0.1 By Halada (Awesome guide!) |

Indeed. Usually a set of five light damage drones.
A note on damage drone choice:
Gallente drones (Hobgoblin, Hammerhead, Ogre) do the most damage and are generally regarded as the best choice for all-round use or PvE. Their damage type is Thermal.
Minmatar drones (Warrior, Valkyrie and Berserker) do decent damage and are the fastest drones. They're usually popular for PvP. Their damage type is Explosive.
Amarr drones do poor damage and have poor speed. They have slightly more armor, but are generally regarded as inferior. Their damage type is EM.
Caldari drones are decent all-round, with OK speed and damage. They're sometimes used when Kinetic damage is required. Their damage type is Kinetic. -----

tp drones will help you hit more with guns,
although for missions i would rather have damage dealing drones usually gallente/caldari drones.
ewar drones can be useful for pvp.

You can lock the small faster ships then rightclick the "drones in space" control under the overview and select attack my target, good for frigates, destroyers & cruisers with high orbit speeds. This method keeps all your drones focused as a group on a single target.
Or you can launch them, then leave it to the drone AI (should really be Artifical Stupidity) and they will attack any ship that fires at/jams/scrambles you. This method can result in just 1 or 2 drones attacking 2-3 seperate ships.
The 1st method is the most recommended as it keeps npc group agro to a minimum, the 2nd can quickly result in a whole mission room of npc's trying to kill you.

My preferred BC is the Myrmidon. It tanks fairly well and has the largest drone bay of the BCs. 125m of drone bay gives one many options of what drones to carry...as in pick a mix for situations you think you may run into. Only carry armor/shield drones if you're going to be repairing others. (Your own drones can't repair or damage you) With the setups I usually run, my drones can deal out more damage than my turrets with the added bonus of rarely missing the target. (Especially with the light scout drones) Drone Interfacing makes your drones even more effective by adding another 20% per level. (Gives a full double damage at level 5) If you're running a great DPS machine already, you might toss in a couple webber drones for those pesky, hard to hit frigs. Got someone who runs a rather hard to break Active Tank setup? Energy Neutralizer drones won't make him happy at all.
There are some of us that fit ships just to support the drones which take out our little problems for us. (It's great being Gallente) _______________________________

Edited by: Falkrich Swifthand on 05/09/2007 14:07:53 Edited by: Falkrich Swifthand on 05/09/2007 14:06:50 NPCs always lock onto the first thing that gets within their range. If this is the drones they die (bad unless you're intentionally using them as a distraction).
A fairly good strategy for doing missions in a gang involves the person with the best tank warping in first (so all enemies lock on to him), other people warp in after, and remote repair / shield boost (with modules or drones) until he's indestructible. The NPCs are too stupid to change target.
EDIT: IIRC "NPCs" includes drones and FoF missiles. Also, if you accidentally shoot your mate or his drones (smartbomb), his drones and FoF missiles will take their revenge on you, and until you both jump to another system (or dock I think) there's no way to stop it. There are jokes about "FoF" meaning "Friend or Foe, who cares, we shoot both".
