Welcome.
Seeing the success of Paladin Vent's map and looking over how it is updated i decided to take the algorithm and port it to PHP so it can be executed on a regular basis. The result was a map which basically looks the same but is rendered at superior speed compared to the original Java implementation. For details on the algorithm and coding please visit the EVEDev Wiki Page.
This link will redirect your browser to the latest map rendered automatically by the cronjob: http://sov.eve-dev.net/latest.php
The current system prints the overview depending on the number of entries to either left, right or both. Once the number exceeds about 40 changes the map will only display changes of sovereignty in outpost systems.
It is planned to add customizable options and timestamps to give users an comfortable Interface to work with and get the statistics they want. There will be an interface to feed new jobs to the server which will then be rendered and displayed to everyone. You can see the current work status of the server on this page: http://sov.eve-dev.net/?page=rendertarget
As an example for options have a look at this map, this is the influence map from today with some debug options: dn = display npc influence oa = omit alliance names or = omit region names
Due to limitations of the EVE API and because i'm obeing their rules the server fetches an updated sovereignty list at 13:00 GMT. This is the only way to make sure it is updated and not old data. It adds a processing job for the fetched data to the stack and you can expect the new map to be ready about 10 minutes later.
Any feedback based on the rendering algorithm, the server stability or suggestions for the user interface are needed and appreciated.
The sourcecode will be released under the GPLv3 as soon as the application is mature and stable.
Known Issues: * The npc influence needs an overhaul as its not exact * Outpost data is static, it will become dynamic as soon as the EVE API provides outpost data ___________________

:)
I started with this project after i multithreaded that released code, glad it's at least useful for you as Paladin had no DualCore. The other good thing with building is that i deeply investigated the used algorithms and also did some java coding... could come handy at sometime ;) Just had real-life issues which prevented me from getting a showable version sooner. ___________________

As I said in Verite's thread, dumping all the maps into one directory and using a flash or php script to generate a slideshow from the directory contents should be quite easy in comparison to the work involved generating the maps.

Has it occurred to you two (Mirida and Verite) to, like, team up?
I've always said that the big problem with Paladin's project was that it was a 1 man show, and he just wasn't capable of keeping up with everything on his own. And then when he disappeared, the project died in the water (until someone finally came along to pick it up a month or so later, thankyou again Verite!). What it needed to be was a proper community project- with several developers working side by side to keep it running and improving.
This is especially applicable now that Verite has started looking in to the concept of multiple maps (the power bloc map and such). If you two teamed up (along with any other bright sparks who want to get involved) and pooled your attempts, we might end up with a single set of totally awesome maps, instead of 2 or more branches of pretty awesome maps ------

This is great and all, but what happened to the Eve-Dev killboard?
No release in months, the only way to get it to parse a killmail is to use a development checkout from subversion, and even then it only parses 90% of mails.
You guys do a great job and I know you don't get paid for what you do.. but that killboard needs love :(

very nice!
some issues from first view: - down in the south, some alliance names are printed on top of each other. While it doesnt matter if there is a region name, covered with some alliance title, the alliance should have some spacing in between. eg "The Sphere Confederation" and "Interstellar Starbase Syndicate" - there is a problem with colour choice, best seen up north: Fatal Alliance and M.Pire have both blue, so its kinda impossible to see what system belongs to whom at one glance. - Lables on Top of stations, in some cases you cant really see if there is a station, or what colour it has, as some lable is printed on top of it. - it looks like if there can be space marked as (eg) Goonswarm, while there is no system or station in the space. Best seen next to Great Wildlands.
some ideas: - hovering stations with the mouse could print the current owner - maybe create some versions of the map that contain certain war theatres, such as the southern regions in one map, the northern in another. Each of these maps could come with higher resolution, so you can better see the area your playing in.

While this map has its problems (I'd like to have the "this place's changed" rectangles a bit bigger, and the outpost system sov changes highlighted in the list, to name a few), this certainly would be worth to be mentioned in the territorial maps list, even if it's pretty much a duplicate.
The algorithm is slightly different when handling the sov, though - this can be seen at the "BoB-claimed void" part of the map.

Yea I have to voice my opinion on this one too, beyond the novelty factor of being CGI/PHP implementation of someone else's work this map is rather pointless because it's missing some of the data, mainly outposts (alredy mentioned) and some sovereignity since this hasn't been running for that long yet. The first one is fixed by a direct feed from Serenity Steele's Outpost Alert in Verite Rendition's map, the latter will fix itself over time.
Also the colors and presentation is worse than in Verite's map. -

I disagree, this is faster, multi threading, fully automated. The latter being the key thing. We seen what happens when some of the others have been on holiday.
Ideal situation would be for all of them to get together to make one map. Taking the best things from each, working together for improvements etc. Stupid not too.

Actually there's a fair amount of Mirida's code in the Java application I run. She made the original program multithreaded, which was absolutely critical for making it run fast enough to be practical. Plus Paladin's code was BSD and she is attributing it to him (what's with the hostility?), so I don't see a problem with that.
And Dawson, mine is fully automated (as long as CCP doesn't feed me bad data). ---- AUS Corp Lead Megalomanic EVE Automated Influence Map: Keeping Down The Clone Business Since 2007AD |

If there is a previous owner then it will show it under Sov. Lost. However if sovereignty dropped and then is gained by another alliance no last owner is shown as there was 'none' in the context of the search algorithm. ___________________

I've made the backend sourcecode available at http://trac.eve-dev.net/browser/sovereignty in case you are interested in how things work. However this is not a 'stable' release, the code looks awfull.
In case you got any questions or suggestions regarding the code or algorithms used please use the wiki at http://wiki.eve-dev.net/Influence_Map for discussions or ask smaller questions right here. ___________________

I've requested it 4 days ago...
The map renders fine, the server has enough bandwidth free, its just a bit slow at rendering and the userinterface doesnt quite exist yet. Besides that everythink works fine and i'd like to get some more feedback on it. By the way, SaraDawn from inEVE.net is working on a new shiny interface and the hosting will be transfered to inEVE.net once its ready because those servers got way more processing power than our little eve-dev.net which is only a single core celeron 1.3GHz.
The next enhancement i'm thinking about is to visualize changes in sovereignty directly on the map (using grey bars or something like that) but this will need an estimated 30% more time to generate and some serious tampering with the rendering core itself. ___________________

Awesome job.
One recommendation though, in your cron job can you create a symbolic link that would always point us to the latest map?
For example, after the link is created, ln -s <latest map> latest.png (if you using a UNIX box as I'm assuming you are). If it's windoze a shortcut would do the same thing. That way we can bookmark the link http://sov.eve-dev.net/maps/latest.png.

What do you try to say? Yes, FREGE does not have the same color as BoB, why should i change that?
Bookmark http://sov.eve-dev.net/latest.php Please note that you cannot visit the page and then bookmark it, you have to add it manually because it uses a 302 redirect for giving you the exact path of the latest image so you can save it with a proper name for your reference. ___________________

Map is great and I love it. But I'd love it even more if station sov changes were more pronounced/apparent. Perhaps highlighting the name on the list and then highlight the system on the map itself?

Edited by: missionalt on 15/11/2007 14:54:00 outta interest, why does it say "GoonSwarm" eight times in various places?
ps consider selling (for isk ofc) an ad spot in the top left corner where there isn't any info, you'd make a fortune

I could add some border/background color around station changes to make them more visible... however they are already marked on the map by a dark circle around them.
About that GoonSwarm-Issue: Looks like the area joiner is running into some problems.... i'll have to investigate this at the weekend as this is a rather complex thing which worked very well up to the last 5 maps. ___________________

Could it be your updates don't work since long time?
It's been a few days since a new outpost was put up in Branch and your map still hasn't noticed it.

Updates: Stealing the automatically-updating outpost data feature from Verite's map would be a nice feature. (Good artists copy, great artists steal.)
If I remember correctly, this map updates automatically, except for the outpost data.

I like your version of the political map, however it has one shortcoming - the colors. You should spend a little bit more time working out the pallets for each alliance. Especially the ones that do not share the same goals and are located close to each other. For instance right now: IRON and Interpids color is too similar, so is Solar Fleet and FIX Alliance, Goonswarm and AAA. As a rule try to make sure that the alliances that share borders have their own distinct look. I understand that the choices are somewhat limited, however it would improve the overall outlook greatly.
I also want to sincerely thank you for all your hard work and wish you the best.

I can change the color of specific alliances if you request it. Right now once an alliance first appears on the map it gets a random color assigned. So feel free to make a list with alliance id and rgb color to assign to it... however, please remeber that some alliances wander around on the map so over time they change their neighbours.
Once you got the list ready i'll assign the colors and initate a redraw of all maps, that will also fix the drone region names, the missing outposts have already been added. ___________________
