fixing lag
once you manage to put nodes strong enough to have 1000 people in a single system and not lagging, the count will rise to 2000 people.
truth is, it's impossible to fix lag.
you CAN minimize it, but fix it? impossible. ---

I've heard that excuse before. I wish that CCP would fire two-thirds of the Devs and hire that many more bug and lag fixers.
CCP says it cares about lag but lag gets worse all the time. It's real easy to say that you care about something. The results prove otherwise.
CCP does not care about lag. They want more shiny stuff so they can get more awards.
Shiny new garbage that does not work is not much compensation for a game that is sometimes downright unplayable.
If there was another space MMORG with less lag I'd move there in a second, giving my stuff to those who never asked for it. So don't bother asking.
Yeah genius idea there...and what rock did you crawl from under?..
As to not 'caring'
1. Constantly adding new hardware(Hello RAMSAN/new Blades)? Check 2. Constantly adding optimizations/hotfixes? Check 3. Looking for the next big 'thing' in terms of server hardware? Check
This game would die if there weren't twice yearly content updates.
Oh and, I demand you stuff.

People would initially whine about not being able to get into Jita, sure. Then they'd realise it wasn't worth their effort and sell elsewhere. Problem solved.

Edited by: Andrahkon on 09/09/2007 09:12:38 Why not make some little changes to fix all trade-hubs with an easy self-regulated solution.
Raise/decrease taxes autoamaticly based on average players in system daily/weekly/month based. Aditionally to that make some limits 100/200/xxx players on average increase the taxes.
As example take jita... Say base-number on normal taxes is <=100players/average the system Tax is 1%. Jita has an average on maybe 500 players, so raise taxes on 4% to 5%.
The effect would be less sellers in jita and more sell their stuff @ the around systems for lower taxes...that means also less buyers in jita --> lag fixed
The market regulates it alone...buys/sells will spread over more systems no more super-trade/lagg systems
Another little solution could be to add an option to the autopilot, where you can avoid systems with more then x-players so you dont have to fly through that systems.
Many ppl only fly through jita because of the autopilot.if you dont wanna fly through you have allways to set waypoints manually around jita.

Ferrosa, they ARE solving it, with the Rev III.
And they couldn't have anticipated what has actually happened.
They tried to fix a large trading hub before - the neuturing of the first system resulted in Jita, and the dev's realising a place like Jita will exsist wherever learnt from their mistakes. They took out the Kisogo gate and moved Jita onto what amounts to three nodes worth of processing power behind it.
TBH this entire lag discussion thing has me weary. Hell the topic in my signature is essentially saying "wait until the rev II upgrades before you ***** about lag".
Shame no-one reads them =) ______________________________ A Request About Lag Discussion -- Yet another "Edit my sig devs!" request \o/ |

Do less powerful client PCs / Internet connections do anything to cause lag?
Surely it can't all be the servers fault
Well maybe it is.. I myself try to avoid laggy situations, and since I havent found a multiplayer game totally devoid of lag yet, I guess thats good enough for me. ----

ive been in jita at busy times. eg 900 people (yes it did happen). and ive seen the lag which was about 2 - 3 minutes per action.
recently jita at peak has been running at 650. i dont go there that often so it may be more. I can usually always get into jita these days. i went last night (650 ppl then) but you cant tell me that 5 minutes to downtime there are 650 people in there. ive been in there on a sunday morning just before downtime in the past and from 1/4 to the number drops substantially. i lagged out jumping into jita and waited 10 minutes. restarted the client several times to no response. i finally got in at 1 minute past 11!!!! i managed to warp to my exit gate at which time the server promptly kicked me off. there were still 107 people there!
so my point here is (yes this is a moan about general jita lag) that i can jump into this system when its extremely busy, but i cant when the players are leaving the system. does jita stop players jumping in before downtime now???? if it does and its an attempt to fix lag why didnt they tell us.
ill bet as soon as the server comes back up ill be able to login and get out of jita instantly

Meh you all whine about lag but the truth is that simply tossing more manpower isn't going to fix it. If CCP thought it was as simple as that you can bet that they would have done it already, and we'd all be happily complaining about the next thing on the list. Simply the game wasn't designed to reasonably handle systems with 650+ people or fights with more than 300+ in a fun way. CCP's failure to plan for the future? Maybe, but it's too late to fix from the roots now, I don't see the new engine fixing that either.
The only thing CCP can do to quickly and definatively reduce population lag is cap the number of people in a system. If they did it to Jita, you might see some movement to other markets, but for the most part you'd just see as many complaints from people whining that they couldn't get into the system.
Two things they could do to get around it is 1) make sure all systems 1 jump around major empire hubs are all connected to each other, or have a new system to act as a roundabout by passing jita. I try to avoid jita as much as possible but there still are routes where AP takes you through Jita. 2) I think CCP talked about this idea before, but you need to be able to purchase things off the market in an adjacent system and for no fee/small fee have it shipped to your location.
But in general, stop whining about CCP and do something yourself. Don't do missions from agents near Jita, go to one of the other market hubs to buy your stuff and always check your route and try and avoid the red blobs on the map. Running Lemming like into Jita and then complaining about it doesn't really help people be sympathetic to your cause.

First of all, your low framerate has nothing to do with latency (lag). Latency is the response time between your client and the server. Framerate is the rate that your graphics card can render frames per second.
Secondly, I recall having read that they were introducing a way in Revelations III where the nodes can get power from other nodes, automatically, shifting the CPU power from less active nodes to support the nodes needing it. I also recall hearing that only 18% of Tranquility's CPU is being used at the moment, because it's hardcoded where the power goes to.
I'm quite sure we'll see some great improvements as soon as Revelations III, and I do not think for one minute that CCP is not taking this problem seriously. ---

Come on, this has to stop being an answer.
If CCP allows the Jita situation to occur, then they should be able to support it. End of. They let the silly numbers of people pile in there - if they can't support it then they should simply stop letting it happen. It's their game, we play by their rules.
you have techno dyslexia. If Jita gets unlagged a lot of people that avoid the place because of the lag will pour in there again creating lag. A different approach is needed to bypass the "throw more hardware in to fix the lag", which is, im guessing, why they havent done it yet.
hell, they have even been throwing in additional hardware all the time recently. Seriously, move out of crowded caldari space. During my four years of playing eve ive hardly ever flown through that overcrowded overrated area of space and im happy happpy happy for it because i play virtually lag free (barring those buggery fleet battles and the occational monstrous mission spawn loading)
seriously, the lag isnt the problem, the caldari cuddle huddling mission humping carebears are. . |

Jita USED to lag with 100 people in the system, then they fixed it, so many more people showed up
it lagged with 200 people in the system, so they fixed it, many MORE lemmings showed up
then it lagged with 400 people in it so they fixed it and EVEN MORE LEMMINGS now show up
now it lags with 900 people and the lemmings **** and moan saying its never been fixed
and as an aside, it doesnt hit server side lag until 900 people+ I can fly around just fine with minimal CLIENT lag at 800 people

This idea is win.. Maybe make an exception list that will let you put the names of systems you don't want to go through..
