A new thread for a new century, welcome to the Complex Fullerene debacle.
The Background
Exactly 40 months ago (3.33 years) there was the very first EVE anniversary event; it celebrated the first birthday of this game into retail. A birthday that many struggling MMORPGs do not receive, but was bestowed upon CCP by an overzealous populace that overlooked the minor detail of paying money for a broken game that by all measurements should still be beta. A birthday that saw Jovians herald in a new dawn of epic, with promise of greatness not witnessed since the rule of Peter The Great. An event so massively massive it included every single player in the EVE cluster, whether or not they wanted it. The Jovian ambassador made his rounds across EVE using a scary new technology; a teleportation chamber of sorts (constructed using the hyper-rare material known as Complex Fullerene) that was beyond understanding.
As with everything the Jovians do, they failed miserably and proved it was beyond their understanding as well. The ambassador was blown to bits, literally, in a terrible accident that saw his innards being spread to all corners of the universe. Goopy bits of his brain, skin and bone were found littering pilots' lockers, sock drawers, ammo closets, and ration containers. A massive hunt ensued where pilots raced in a faction-based competition to see who would recover enough pieces of the broken Jove to reconstruct him. Pilots representing the four empires provided their time, support, pieces, shards, and leadership in this grand event. The caldari won narrowly, with the gallente coming a close second; and treacheries notwithstanding, it was a fine event!
The Leftovers
Apparently the Jovians did not require all microscopic parts of their wily comrade, only batches. Who knows why? Maybe they decided to punish his incompetence by creating him with a few less appendages (not that he used them anyways). But many pilots were left wondering, "What the crap do I do with this rotting Jove flesh?". The Minmatar tried eating it, but found Fedo meat would remain uncontested in its succulence. The Amarrs tried blessing it, and using Jove essence in religious trances. That too was abandoned when many followers complained of blasphemous dreams involving the Heaven constellation. The Gallente decided to simply throw them out, because they're a bit more rational than all those other freaks. But the issue of proper disposal, the subsequent debates, and bills, is rumored to have held back the presidential election to record degree. The Caldari State did some genetic experiments, and isolated the sequence which gave the Jovians extraordinary intelligence. Unfortunately the data was robbed by Gurista raiders, who mistook it for coordinates for a Navy storehouse and jumped their armada straight into a Star.
The pilots? They asked CCP, and this is..
The Response
CCP: Sirs, hold onto your Jove Bits! It will be used eventually!
<two months later>
CCP: Do not fret, we are brainstorming ideas! One such idea is to integrate the jovebits into agent offers of high value! The shards will be used in their own event!
<four months after that>
CCP: Oh yeah, well we're kind of busy with this Kali thing, which we estimate will be out by Q3 2004! We'll see about including it into the expansion.

Oveur> Hey, don't you think we should do something about those shard things? I'm getting angsty emails we didn't use them in our second anniversary event. People are worried we may be ignoring the issue. TomB> Don't worry about it, I got an idea. I'm thinking since clone jumping is so popular, we should introduce it into EVE in a real way. People will be able to jump around, and not lose their implants. Oveur> Like the Jovian ambassador's teleportation device? Makes sense. TomB> Yes! Oveur> Isn't that a bit overpowered? What costs will there be? TomB> The shards will be required to make these great devices! How bad could it be?
<18 months later>
Oveur> OH GOD THEY WANT KALI, WHAT DO WE DO TomB> WHAT IFF..! WE MAKE.. <hiccup> THE EVES EASIER.. FRRR CARE..BEARSSS, TO PVP, AND, ..KEEP THEIR IMPLANTS?? Oveur> That's so crazy it might work! What should we do about the shards? TomB> What... shards..? Oveur>... Oveur>Hahahaha, brilliant! TomB> U STOLD MY GIN???
<2 years later>
CCP: Shards? Oh er, the answer to that is simple. 42.
<3 years later>
Wrangler: Greetings, I am Komandant Wrangler. This is a thread for you to praise the monolithic entity known as CCP, and awe in their ability to sucker you into four years of woeful customer loyalty. You may also reminisce. Freedom of speech enabled. Me: WHAT THE HELL MAN? A THREAD? THIS AINT NO EVENT! WHAT ABOUT THE GODDAMN SHARDS!??! <after 5000 replies> Me: All hail the glorious Icelander regime of crowd controlling omnipotence. Wrangler: I have purged the insolent, and corrected the grammatical errors of many others. Freedom of speech disabled.

The jovian expansion, complete with DNA mutators, is a long way off yet. When that comes in, I would guess that the parts we have might be able to be used as dna samples of a modified jovian and we'd get some use out of it that way. The main problem with that is that the Jovian expansion is not even on the drawing board until well after faction warfare and planetary flight.
As for the complex fullerene shards, who knows? Personally, I have a fairly good stock of parts and shards and have high hopes for whatever comes.

I still have the same shards and remember the same talk about them being used for "something" in the future.
Would be nice to hear an official announcement thingie about it though, so I can finally scrap them without second doubts.

Even if they're never going to be used for anything, I'll buy them off you :D. I have a station container where I keep tons of collectable stuff. I've deliberately failed a certain courier mission three times so that I could keep the item (Dolls) :D.

CCP, I feel that I should complain about the above post...
Less whines from those who have the shards if CCP do nothing. If you now introduce something that uses them, it will be wholesale megawhines from newer players that cannot get hold of them now. "Veterans already have huge amounts of isk. Why give them the ability to rip the market for huge amounts more?", or similar whines. Unless of course, CCP add them as loot or something.

Your optimism is sickening Nyphur, and the only reason anyone would collect things of zero value for the sake of collecting things is if they were so depressed at life they needed continual distractions to prevent reminding them how crap everything is.
And Pottesy, rping an Enheduanni-lover doesn't work that well if you can't even enter the ingame Enheduanni channel.
