Hellmar, you said you are looking into removing missile splash damage and wanted players opinions, well here is the thread.
My opinion: Missile splash damage, is pointless, it only accomplishes two things:
a) Usually causes your own missiles to destroy each other, resulting in the poor DoT of missiles to be even worse.
b) Causes splash damage to another ship/object in Empire space which brings CONCORD/Sentry Guns down on your ass faster than you can say 'eep' and results in the 100% garunteed destruction of your ship. Sometimes people purposely use alt characters to try to get your missiles to splash them, resulting in your immediate termination.
Splash damage makes using missile oriented ships in wars fought in empire space impossible.
Rarely does the splash damage on missiles ever benefit you, it used to take out drones, but that is not the case any longer because drones orbit outside of torpedo range now.
Bottom line -- The blast radius on missiles does nothing useful. It make missile DOT worse and winds getting you killed by your own missiles, get rid of it. ------

Agreed, I can't think of anything it's actually GOOD for. I sure know that it sucks in empire space wars.

I disagree, and have been on the receiving end of missile splash damage.
Missiles are AREA OF EFFECT weapons and anything/everything inside that area should sustain damage.
To remove the AOE would turn them into purely larger projectile weapons.

Agreed.
Keep the nice splash effect in though - it's half the pleasure of using missiles to see the nice explosions.

Edited by: Galmore on 12/02/2004 17:06:50 That would befine with me i dont use them...
and plus that way when i send in 10 hammers and someone lunches 1 torp it would only dmg the ONE drone that set it off
missiles in this game ARE slash dmg... they explode at range and dmg everthing in a blast radus ...
so removeing slash dmg would be removing missiles or would mean a TOTAL revamp of missile game play!!

Admiral IceBlock i want to remove splash damage from Smartbombs!
Smartbombs are strictly defensive modules, they obviously use too much capacitator energy to kill another battleship, realistically.
The problem at hand is that many ships in the game not only use missiles, but must use missiles offensively in combat, especially Caldari ships, and Minmatar ships as well.
The current game mechanics highly disadvantage missile users when fighting a 'war' in empire space (will become much more common with the impending war standings changes) due to the splash damage which causes CONCORD to intervine and destroy you.
Smartbombs are more or less, optional weapons. No ship in this game has to use smartbombs, no ship in this game has 'smartbomb only' slots.
Smartbombs are not commonly used weapons, they're rarely used period. I don't think smartbombs and missile splash is the same thing, apples and oranges, IMO.

One could argue the other side as well though. Podding people should not be an automatic thing with the destruction of a ship, there should be a chance to flee. Missiles causing automatic podding, is a bug.
Also what about cargo cans? Are you happy when missiles blow those up in one fell swoop as well?

According to TomB, many changes are coming to missiles.. read the dev chat @ evegate today, among other things.
Quote: Then DONT use a NUKE in Downtown LA!!! so in the end its a idiodic idea <--- just my thought dont mean to hurt any fellins
So what you are saying is, don't use ships that rely on missiles for any portion of their offense? Missiles do not out damage turrets, if missiles had huge advantages over turret, I might agree, but obviously that is not the case, so your comments are well, uneducated.
I won't debate any more past this thread as I want this to be a thread of players opinions -- not debate. Though I do think some of these comments are just ignorant. Oh well. ------

they could just made splash dmg hostile spicific (and the intended target)

Disable splash damage until you can get it right is my take.
Getting it right would involve splash damage not doing anything other then damaging things in it's AoE. Simple. Just delete all code past the x takes y damage..

Errr, how exactly is "giving opinions" whining?
Admiral IceBlock: Missiles are supposed to be the 4th weapon type. A weapon type that can't be used in empire space? Gallente: Hybrids + drones Amarr: Lasers (Edit: Plus a bit of both missiles and drones I guess, but they do have a ship with 8 turrets, unlike all the other races) Minmatar: Projectiles + missiles Caldari: Missiles + hybrids (please note that I wrote missiles *before* hybrids)
Smartbombs are not the same.

basically I have to agree, missile splash is too much of a bother to keep around, especially now that the explosion radii have been reduced anyways.
what I fear is that if splash is removed completely weŚll be stuck with even less ways to counter drones (torps still do wonders).
so how about this:
- remove the splash damage on everything.
- add a dedicated anti-drone missile type, moderate damage, high splash radius (about what the torp was pre-patch, maybe even a bit more).
that way we could use offensive missiles for what theyŚre intended (taking down single ships), we coudl fight our wars nicely and weŚd still have the option to do splash damage when we want.
or, tone down concords instakill policy a bit.

Hmm that's actually quite good! Remove splash damage from rockets to cruise missiles, but increase it (yes, I said increase) it on torpedos. They DO have a splash radius bonus after all...
Makes training cruise missiles look even less stupid, too.

That would certainly distinguish cruise missiles from torpedoes considering many consider torpedoes to be superior in many regards. ------

I agree with removing spalsh damage from all but torpedoes. The one valid use for splash damage is to take out drones with a torp. For all others its purely negative.

I'd support removing it from missiles .. it hurts them far more than it ever helps
possibly leave it on torps .. or create a new variant/s with splash for those that want it

I suggest that splash damage is cut to 50% (only direct hits to your target will do full damage), and then add splash resists to certain items, like pods and cargo containers. A pod might for example only take 20% of the 50% splash damage, so a torpedo would only do 45 damage to a pod.
Your 425mm Prototype I Gauss Gun perfectly strikes some nublar, wrecking for 1155.0 damage. |

Hi JIm, i agree with ya i'm just busting your ba11s dude lighten up
and as far as splash bamage goes what's wrong with it in rl missles, grenades, warheads ect ect all have splash damage. i know its a game but its cool when rl stats come in play with games. trust me dude it pi$$es me off when i'm trying to chain kill rats with my torps and just watch all the loot cans disapear but hey thats Eve life
it also sux when i'm in Empire space hunting NPC's and my buddy is within splash range and Concord burns me like a slice of toast owell no biggy thats my mistake for not paying attention sorry if i might have upset u Jim but all this trolling about the same thing over and over and over and over... well u get the point.
Also TomB introduced 2 NEW Hybrid rail guns sweet i say and TomB reduced the activation cost and powergrid requirement for other rail guns i say sweet nice job. You on the other hand Jim found something to complain about But but but TomB Raven needs 50 more CPU and why did u reduce powergrid req. TomB u should have reduced CPU req.
Give the guy a break Jim he's busting his a$$ for u and everyone else
