Can anyone explain this to me? It burns about 30% CPU time on my AMD 3500+ and it doesn't seem to do anything.
isn't it funny how some people advocate both GTC<=>ISK trades and EVE being superior due to its cruelty and costly losses, when they use the former to circumvent the latter?

Since i ever saw eve, the logon screen has always been taking up more cpu then the game itself :p Has to do something with the background image rendering... -------------------------- War. War never changes EvE Training Monitor / iMonitor / iCEO EvE iHelper |

The new engine will supposedly use the graphics card for rendering, instead of the CPU.

Eve's User Interface is poorly coded and is awfully resource hungry. The startup screen is just part and parcel of that.
press ctrl-tab during the game to turn the UI layer off and see the speed increase. vOv -- 99% of Eve-o posters should stop posting. This probably includes me, but definitely includes you. |

Edited by: torswin on 13/09/2007 11:57:27 It is because YOU haven't turned on Vertical Sync.
Now it tries to draw as many frames as it can, and thus eat your CPU.t t
Not to be hash or anything though. It's just not CCP's fault --- Signature radius: 150 mm Unless explicitly stated, this post does not represent my alliance, corporation, my own, or any other living organism's view. |

Where does one go and turn on vertical sync?

Yes, but why can't they just add a call to sleep() or something ... PCs with modern CPUs use up to 30W more or so with the CPU time used by ExeFile.exe, so a simple calculation yields:
25000 users x 30W x 1 hour = 750KWh burned every DT
that's 275.75MWh per year, not counting the irregular DTs (since I was generous with giving DTs 1 hour).
that amount of power costs approximately 40.000 Euros (power is a bit cheaper in the US I guess) and that's how much money this "bug" costs CCP's customers per year (it's not much compared to other costs and farting sheep harm the environment more, but still ... an unnecessary waste, right?).

Or you could just exit the client during downtime and use EVEMon to tell you when the server comes up.

or you could close your client... or better yet turn off your pc if your not using it...
i jus tcant beleive your whining about that..

Edited by: torswin on 13/09/2007 12:31:28 yep, but your FPS will be capped at around your monitor's Hz rate (60-75-ish for LCD monitors)

This behaviour wasnŠt there in the beginning of Eve, but started in one of the last major expansions. It was either Revelations 1 or one the releases before (Red Moon Rising or Dragon?).
IŠve still an old client on my HD (I think from Exodus), which doesnŠt use as much CPU at login-screen.
But IŠve read anywhere (last Devblog?), that CCP plans to release a new patcher and login-screen in the next patch, which could resolve this prob.

That's how games tend to work. Games want to have 100% CPU time of your PC, so the game can run smoothly.
Just look it up when you play another game, most of them will use 100% or 50% CPU time even while they're doing nothing (e.g. inside main menu).

EVE Online: a cold, cruel world where (RL-)rich people replace their losses with GTCs sold to poor students who need to farm ISK to afford their play time ...
