Eve uses Unicode which supports just about all scripts.
The ESC window has Japanese as the first option - it says 'Japanese' in Kanji! The second looks to say 'Hangugeo', that is 'Korean', written in Hangul which is the native Korean script.
'Kanji' means literally 'Han characters', the Chinese script that is used in a variant form in Japan. I would assume the Eve Chinese server is using the PRC version, which like Kanji is simplified from traditional Chinese characters.
If you go to Babelfish http://babelfish.altavista.com/ and translate say some English into Japanese you can Cut and Paste it into Eve. My Achura alt has named her ships using Japanese Kanji.

I live in Japan (but am English). None of the people I know have heard of it, I got my girlfriend on (Japanese) for about 2 hours, signed her up with a trial account and everything, but my computer had no Japanese translation for the instuctions. It was very difficult for her to complete the tutorial. In the end I broke up with her and I guess her trial expired. :(
But I have a new girlfriend. perhaps I'll try to get her playing! :) No more. |

ahh I see :) I was friends with a taiwanese student who came over to study, and he taught me some 'Kanji' (things like chicken, cat, water, etc :P), alas I've forgotten many of them, but Kanji is so different to English that I intend to learn it, if I'm able that is...and probably the japanese version...
wow! i remembered what chicken looked like, so complex...and I now have an kanjii named ship 圣洁装甲 ^_^

This is why I'm even afraid to specify that I'm not a westerner at times. You'd be surprised at how many asian-eastern gamers find EVE boring. Trying to get my countrymen to play EVE is not only hard because of that, but also because of the cost per month. -

I blames language barrier.
Not sure about Japanese, but methinks most Koreans are too busy playing their own MMOs... that are free, and come in Korean.
Wells, you're seeing a Korean right here. -------- You don't like me, and I don't like you. The difference is, I don't care as long as I have the maids. |

Nice anecdote about the smoking.
I also think Korean MMOs are designed to be played in their "internet cafes", although what I have seen on TV about these shops they seem to be the mix of a western internet cafe and a arcade. ___

Edited by: Lucy Skylancer on 15/09/2007 06:55:26 Maybe they are playing the asian mmorpgs. I've tried some of them and the latest I've been playing were more hack&slay style with big flashy damage numbers appearing over the monsters heads or a big flashy 'Level up !' showing.
EVE feels darker and more serious. EVE is not happy monster slaying with constant progress and satisfaction, but contains also times of frustration or times where it's tedious, not much happens, no action so to speak, besides chatting and preparing some stuff.
Maybe a cultural/lifestyle thing. E.g. in Japan, robots are cult and video games cool. Were I live, not really. The random guy doesn't care about robots and you are still seen as a 'freak', if you play computer games a lot.
edit: I also don't know, how EVE fits into the life of older asian people. EVE is not the typical youth game. We have a lot of older gamers in EVE. Many are 25+, fleet commanders often between 30 and 40, one of my corpmates was 56 and grandfather.

This brings up an important distinction, sort of. Asian gamers tend to favor what Westerners refer to as "grinding" games. Maybe they like tangible results that appear with quantifiable regularity. Maybe they like seeing their actions result in real numbers they can wrap their heads around.
Who knows? Eve isn't for everyone, just as Lineage 2, or countless other games aren't for everyone. To each their own, I say (OK, I stole that from a dead guy).
PS - it's really sad that anyone from an Asian country is labeled as a farmer. Does anyone else think of the King of the Hill episode where they met Hank's new neighbor from Laos. Everyone asked him, "Are you Chinese or Japanese?"
I used to get It. Then It changed. Now I don't even know what It is.

I'm Asian (chinese) living in Australia, and probably the only person in my school ever heard, let alone playing eve. This is a game more concentrated to you western folk. Here in Australia, the simple WoW or Lineage is all we can do, or understand for that matter.

I'm Swedish and all I know is that we got some hot looking women over here.
Discuss..
theres plenty of them playing, they just work at eve for a living. You know, the pay is half a bowl of rice a day, in exchange for grinding out billions worth of ISK. Fair trade off if you ask me.
And to those of you who will begin to flame with the "OMG UR SUCH A RACIST"....prove me wrong that any interaction youve had with ISK Farmers is nothing short of thos conversation:
Isk Farmer0239423> I from asia, no speak english You> What are you doing here? Isk Famrer0239423>Making I S K You> What do you spend it on, you never leave the system?? Isk Famrer0239423>Cash
ive had several of those conversations with these farmers. So dont tell me that im being racist when theyre clearly admitting theyre ******* chinese/japanese/vietnamese.
well tbh yes maybe alot the farmers are asian BUT who pay them the money to do it? who are the oens buying this isk off them/there employer.....
rich american people who cant be arsed to play the game properly?
