Actually, that's not a bad comparison. Remember the old turn based strategy games, Age of Wonders etc? That had a play-by-email option where you could play a turn or two per night by exchanging the move data over email.
But then again, being able to move once per night was actually more than I was able to do today

I have no idea, maybe for fun? Hell it'd be quite an awesome fight if you managed to tackle a solo battleship with 20 trainee frigates, and it's not like anything important was happening at the time.
