It is with great sadness that I must relate that Robert Jordan, author of the Wheel of Time series, has died of cardiac amyloidosis aged 58.
Slashdot Article

Our prayers go out to Jordan's family and friends in this time of grief.
For fans awaiting the 12th and final WoT book, it is anticipated that the work can be completed based on Jordan's copious notes, although no timeframe is indicated yet.

This isn't Nature, it's an internet forum thread. The topic is the passing of one specific individual, not the collected religious opinions of Erotic Irony. Please start your own thread to discuss those. ----------

This is the first I've heard about RJs sad and untimely passing (excepting the first thread here in OOP...why??). I never realised Robert Jordan was his pen name! I finished WoT book 7 just as 8 came out, and since have had the eagerly anticipated 2 year waits until 11. When I heard 12 was the last I was very excited and have followed RJs blog and deteriorating condition over the past 18 months or so. It's a tragedy for fans of RJ and the fantasy genre in general and undoubtedly a keen loss to his relatives and friends. Thank God though he no longer suffers and may he rest in peace.
I would also very much love to see a finished book 12. It will be the crown of his greatest literary work as well as answer all the burning questions still unanswered. He was a master writer who invented one of the most absorbing and exciting fantasy worlds imaginable and one of my favourite authors. -------------

Thread cleaned - keep this on-topic. This is NOT a forum for discussing religion, so don't. (The previous thread turned into 5-6 pages of religious arguement and has been removed.)
I've never managed to read the entire WOT series, but I've always been a massive fan of the second book in the collection.
My sympathies go to RJ's family at this time.

Edited by: Miss Anthropy on 17/09/2007 17:08:40 Like I said in the previous thread before it was thankfully cleaned, I got up to about book 4 or 5 of the WoT series. Great books. I wish I'd carried on reading the others now. Hopefully someone will finish the last book just like David Gemmell's wife finish his last Troy book after he died. Two great fantasy authors dying in less than a year is a tragedy.

Crying shame. Good thing he's got a ghost writer to actually finish out the series. Not like he wrote the last 5 books anyways, eh?
Still, loss of a good author. My thoughts are with his family.

I must say a tear came ot my eye when I heard this news. RoJo is one of my favorite authors...
I feel I must also say that RoJo is the only and first person in my entire life that I have truly prayed for in my heart... that he may finish the series. We will never forget you RoJo and thank you forever for the wonderful books you have given our lives! May you rest in peace!

Yes, I was truly shocked and saddened to hear this. I knew that he had been sick for some time, but I somehow expected him to actually recover.
Its really weird. Robert Jordan's books have been an ever present part of my life since the mid-1990s. Friends and I often joked that RJ would probably go the way of Frank Herbert before the WoT was finished.
At the time it seemed funny, it doesn't now.

What??? Oh man... I can't believe it! I was just reading the 11th book and came to check the forums, and now that! That's a really really sad thing. He had told about his disease, but he was so positive and hoped to make even more books after that one... A sad thing indeed; Rest In Peace, Robert Jordan.

The last book (A Memory of Light) is probably half done or more--directly written by Jordan. The final chapter(s) have been written for a long time now...and from what I understand for the last few months he's been taking copious notes and sharing details with his family. The last book WILL come out and the series finished. My guess would be late 2008 or early 2009...it might even be sooner depending on whats already done--Jordan was very limited in his writing time due to the amyloidosis, and the replacement author will undoubtably be able to crank pages out at a much faster rate once he gets settled in. (insert wry comment about needed half the pages to tell the same content here...great author, terribly verbose though)
The state of the last two prequels and the spinoff one-shots, however, are not looking too good imo.

The story will be finished. He had extensive notes for the Encyclopedia that Harriet (his wife) was writting. He told the rest of the story to his cousin and his wife. He made sure he didn't take the story with him. He promised that the book would be finished and it will.

I was saddened to hear this, i have just started reading the series at the beginning of the year, onto book 5 now, i met him a couple of times at a book signing though with my cousin who was a huge fan before i started reading the series, i noted that even then he did not look or act at all well but even through his illness he made a lot of time for his fans,
Rest in peace

Too bad he died before finnishing his last book though.
