What's to keep me from just clicking on the gate and clicking JUMP to go back where I came from if I get warp scrambled? Or, does that stop jumping too?

The 12km of distance between you and the gate.
Sure, you can high-tail it back and get out... if you have a fast ship, or a really heavy tank on a slow ship, or if you don't get webbed to a crawl by those in the gate-camp gang. _______

Edited by: Nexus Kinnon on 20/09/2007 19:14:30 The fact that you come out ~12km from the gate you jumped through would be something to do with it I think.
EDIT: Damn you!

The campers will try to web you immediately. With multiple webs all giving -80% speed your ship will basically stop. This is where cloaks come in handy as you can jump in, look around for those 30 seconds that you say cloaked from gate effects, double click to re-approach the gate and hit microwarpdrive very fast and hit your cloak. Hopefully they won't lock on you in time. The cloak has a speed penalty but that initial mwd burst can carry you quite close to the gate. Or you can make a run for it in the other direction.
Stasis webifier, either T1 or T2 has a max range of 10km. When you jump through the gate you land 12 km away. If campers are sitting right on gate, you will be 1-2 km outside their web range this will prevent them from webifying you right on the spot. This gives you a few seconds to try to escape. However they can also have ships along that have stasis webifier range bonus. Or they can use faction webs, for example Shadow Serpentis web is relatively cheap 13km web that gives only -70% speed, but it is still great for camping without Huginns or Cruors in gang.

Depending on how big the camp is/how quick their ships are, you can oftentimes et away. Unless you are in 0.0, you will not see anything smaller than battlecruisers at gatecamps due to sentry guns. Also, the people will generally be either hugging the gate or sniping, as such, there is a good chance that they will not be within web or even warp scrambling range when you jump through, since the gate is several km long and wide..and you can pop out 12km from any point on the gate.
Your only hope is to hope to warp away to some object in the system to get away from them. If you're in 0.0, they can bubble the gate..and if you end up in a bubble, you are most likely screwed, since you can't warp away, and in general, you won't be able to run back to the gate in time.

Edited by: Panch0Villa on 20/09/2007 20:57:01 If you are in Empire space, all you have to worry about is turning and getting up to 80% speed in time. Then you warp. Most often a shuttle or a frigate will turn and jet outta there before the bigger ships can lock you and attack.
If you are in 0.0, you will find out about the mighty warp bubble very quickly. My very first venture into 0.0 involved a bubble. Lasted all of 3 seconds.
