Look at the other primates, chimpanzees are our closest relatives, the most intelligent non-human ape and they eat other monkey's. On the other hand, you have Gorilla's, which are completely herbivorous, and as dumb as a sack of equally-heavy hammers.
What are you? A fat, stupid gorilla who can't tell their fist from a coconut or a lean, intelligent chimpanzee who uses their own excrement as a weapon?
Gorillas aren't strictly veggies. Also Bonobos are equally our closest relatives in terms of common ancestor: they are primarily frugivores and have never been observed eating other monkeys. By your misinformed and flawed logic perhaps we should mostly eat fruit and have sex all day? Wait... yeah, actually I want to be a bonobo .
Seriously I've been vegetarian for 21 years and don't miss mass processes meat at all. Get all my protein from nicely spiced Mycoproteins. The lenght of our digestive tract isn't an arguement against being vegetarian, its an arguement against an unbalanced and unhealthy diet.
What did you expect from network TV in a right wing area dominated anyway? You can't have sexy pinko, commie, veggie terrorists polluting the airwaves... think of the children, well the local Beef industry anyway.

No...the case was thrown out. Oprah was just expressing her freedom of speech. She was sued by cattle ranchers who thought her comments about beef would hurt their business. She was saying somethin about mad cow disease.

It could equally be argued our choice to eat meat made us give in to our lower animal passions, that in fact we have descended rather than ascended. The fact that many of you have such ease in using your closest animal relative as reasoning for eating meat suggests this Given that meat is much harder on the digestive system, perhaps this also explains the on show slothfulness with regard to knowledge of the vegetarian/vegan diet. Raw meat is harder to digest than raw vegetation, but sometime in humanities history we devised heating our food to leave more of our bodies energies for other activities. As it stands, the hardest thing for a human to digest that we currently eat is cellulose; unlike other herbivorous animals, we lack the specific glands which would secrete the enzymes required to break down alot of raw plant material. Thus, a diet that focuses solely on vegetation will provide less energy per meal than one of mixed components.
The healthiest diet is one of variety, and moderation. Eating all meat is just as bad as eating all vegetation/fruits.

Meat is harder on my digestive system because I've only been eating it for a tenth of the time I've been eating veggies. My body has not naturally selected to accommodate it yet. Nevertheless, it is a more efficient source of both energy and raw materials to me. T2 Shield Booster mostly sucks, but it's worth it for when you really need it.
Life is always about really needing it. Individuals who trade Capacitor efficiency for Alpha Strike damage always win. At least enough to procreate, that is. ----- TANSTAAFL

While true, it doesn't mean much. We'd also still be swinging from the trees if we hadn't discovered a way of using pointed rocks to smash open bones to eat the marrow, but I don't know many people who do that in their lunch break.
Our high-protein meaty diet (enabled by use of primitive tools and fire) is undoubtedly what helped the man-apes become less ape and more man, and dead animals was by far the most efficient way of doing that. But if someone wants to get their protein from mycoproteins, dairy and exotic Asian bean curd these days, theres no reason why not. Things like mycoprotein have only become available in the last few decades due to scientific advances, so it wasn't exactly an option for your average monkey.
That said, you couldn't pay me enough to prise me away from a good steak. Or Bacon. Or Lamb chops. Or a nice piece of fish. Or...er...going to eat dinner, brb. ------

(Bearing in mind this is all theory, and the evolutionary cause of intelligence is always hotly debated)
While Intelligence may have been facilitated by a High Protein Diet, it does not stand that a High Protein Diet = Intelligence. Thats no more sensible than saying that Drums cause Noise, so all Noise must = Drums.
The theory that I was referencing up top shares the key idea with most of it's rivals. This particular theory was that our ancestors were scavengers and low-level hunters on the African savannah, as are several varieties of apes nowadays. 90% of meat eaters on the African continent (lions, vultures, rats, whatever) are only equipped to eat the flesh of dead animals (which they all do very well), and with a few notable examples (hyenas and crocodiles for example, with their strong jaws and powerful stomachs respectively) animal kills will end up as a picked clean (but itself untouched) skeleton. This skeleton is packed full of high-protein, high-calorie, high-fat bone marrow.
So, the theory goes, when some clever monkeys discovered that a sharp rock for smashing and a thin twig for scraping was all that was required to access a largely untapped MASSIVE source of nutrients, they won themselves a massive surplus of life resources to spend on growing a big expensive brain. As the monkeys that could develop the better tools for the job had better access to the goods, and as the same tools could also be adapted with very little work for all sorts of other handy monkey-uses, you've got yourself a path to intelligence.
Similar theories say it was shellfish, or hunting tools for tackling large herbivores, or fire for getting a more efficient meal out of your meat. But they all share the core idea that a simple and easily discovered tool would lead to a massive protein intake, which could facilitate the growing of our highly resource-intensive brains.
But remember, there are many different evolutionary tools for doing the same job. Why doesn't the hyena, with it's equal ability to devour bone marrow, also have offices and laptops and shoes and all the other things associated with intelligence? Well, because for them, massive crushing jaws are the way to go, not tools. And if massive crushing jaws are what is making you survive, why would evolution favour anything other than massive crushing jaws? What would ever make you discover tools?
And as it happens, hyenas ARE argued to be one of the more intelligent carnivores currently in existence, showing problem solving and coordination similar to that of primates. Its never going to turn in to tool making, because its a completely different branch of intelligence (the intelligence of how it is most efficient to kill things with your teeth). But none the less, could be a good sign that their protein-rich marrow diet is giving their brains some extra resources too.
(All of the above is learned from Wikipedia, School and TV documentaries, and so should under no account be taken as anything other than rambling speculation of a bored internet spaceships guy) ------

Apparently, they hypothesize that velociraptors (sp?) had the intelligence equal to that of modern day dolphins, and were able to work in tandem to take down prey too large to handle solely. Something about cranium size ratioed to body size.
As well, intelligence is not the end result of dietary requirements, it simply makes more sense that a predator requires some notion of understanding of its preys possible behaviour to maximize its ability to hunt. Last I checked, banana's can't juke too well being attached to the tree when a hungry Gorilla comes stomping by.

You just filled in a gap I was totally unaware of. My originally quoted concept was something I got from Larry Niven, namely that we as apes are supremely unsuited to catching fresh meat. We can't do it non-cursorially like cats, and we don't do much better cursorially hunting in turns like dogs. Given only our bodily weapons, that is. When we decided that meat was better than leaves, and we wanted more of it, we had to develop both the tools and the techniques to hunt. Other carnivores were given the natural tools by evoloution. We were given intelligence.
