IMO tutorial helps keep eve clean of people who want insta gratification. eve it a long term game no getting to L50 amarr tank then switching to make a L50 caldari ganker then going for a L50 minmatar cry baby . Eve take planning and attention to details that other mmorpgs think thier customer bass are to dumbass for.

To be honest, eve should be sold only instore, with a pop-up boot waiting for you to open it.

Originally by: CCP Prism X Welcome to EvE-Online. Usually I follow these posts up with advising to not trust anyone but you seem to have that straight now.
I support new people coming and posting stories like this here. It gives other newbies an insight they might not have yet and even gives us developers an insight into how it is to be a new player in EvE which can be hard for us to relate to in general.
I have a couple of questions for you (OP) if you don't mind. You just went through a rather abusive experience but said you still liked the game. Out of curiosity, would you have preferred not to have experienced this. That is to say, would you trade away the lesson learned with both the knowledge gained and the memory of the abusive *****s. We're always working on improving the New Player Experience so any information is always helpful.
And another question if you could humor me. Your first week here VS your first week in WoW? Obviously these two games are very different from each other but like I said earlier, any insight can only help.
Thank you and fly safe.
I am on my second month myself. This is my second attempt at the game as well. When I first played the game I was able to get in on the last phase of beta and had a horrible experience. As soon as I left the station I was hunted down and attacked repeatedly. I dont recall if there was concord at the time or not.
After being completly bored with EQ and WoW I started to want to give Eve another shot. I download the game and start playing it. I really liked the visuals and the tutorials were helpfull as well. My first week in eve didnt go as well as I had hoped it would have either. It wasnt as bad as the OP but the experience didnt deter me from the game. I do have to say that my first experience with wow as compared to eve was far better. Here is a couple of things that I found that I hated. More senior people know the ins and outs of what to do to cause grief.
My first pvp expierence was due to a person who had been playing the game for years knew how to take advantage of the system. I was mining in a can and went to go get my other ship to transport the ore back to the station. When I got back to get the ore this person had moved it to another can and renamed the can to the same name that I had it named. When I went to get my ore he decloaked and nailed me. I didnt get the pop up message as I think I may have somehow disabled it when I first started playing eve. I was ticked but it was a learning experience. I just wish that aspect of the game wasnt there.
Now the most recent thing I hate is a person sees someone recruiting new people in the recruiting channel. This person who I will not name has an alt that he gets to join the corp. Were all new and are still trying to figure things out and he starts to gain our trust. This person has another alt that is the ceo of a corporation that has his main that has more SP then all the members in my corporation. He decides to have some fun so he dec war on us and uses his other alt to lay traps for us. We did the only thing we could do since all of us together could not defend ourselves against him. We left the corp to form a new one.
To me this a game killing event for a new person. Why should I spend my time paying to play a game where it is soooooooo easy for a more senior person to take advantage like this. I really like the game so far but if events like this keep occuring I for one will not keep playing it.
I do believe if CCP is serious about getting and retaining new people then they need to address the gap of a 70 mill Sp toon versus a 1.2 mill Sp person. I for one would be in favor of a new server an think that would help address this gap and retain new players as it would give them a chance.

Well tbh thats just not true in NO other PVP based mmorpg i know of can a new player lock down and ransom a player with 3 years xp. lets look at WOW can you tell me if a L20 char can even hit a L45 ? not a chance and same is true for all the others, eve is a harsh hard game and the tutorial should reflect that. As for new server please stop there, eve is one server and should always remain so till the hamsters stop running.

And I think people are placing way too much emphasis on SP. For one, we have seen a group of HAULERS kill a Vagabond. Then again, just because someone has 70mil, who knows how many is in what, if 50mil are in Trade and Industry and Science, that isn't giving you a "clear" advantage in combat.

Not that I think SP is a terrible problem in eve, you can go from L20 to L45 in wow in a couple weeks easy. There is also a max level you can catch up to. In eve, you'll never have the SP a player who started 3 years before you does.
On the other hand I think the price drop in implants has helped newbies out in eve.

For every individual module there are anywhere from 3 to 50 different components used to build it... from base minerals, reactions, salvage, T2 comps, deadspace/COSMOS, Comet gasses, Ice, datacores, decryptors... yadda yadda OMFG...
It's freakish. Has anyone even counted the individual building materials in the game?

The diversity of eve's skills makes it impossable to catch up yes but as someone posted above 50m sp in industry is not going to help ou in pvp 50 m sp in guns aint gona help you tank much etc. Yes in other mmorps's you can get to the same lvl as the player who has been playing for 4 years in a few weeks but then what ? get the same armour ? have all your epic set ? only differance between you and the next guy is you gave your toon bigger fun bags. my char can fly all ships in EvE bar capitals, can use all guns and missiles for those ships T2 generaly geared towards pvp and yet i can still get ships blown away but someone with 30m sp less than me because they chose to specialise in one race, skill points are not the god of eve ISK is.

Be very carful when you ask for this ... appealing to a broader market place is what Star Wars Galaxies tried to do (does anyone remember that game?) and look what happened to them. They tried to out do WOW at it's own game and completly destroyed thier player base -and- the game it self in the process.
I'm not saying that I'm afriad of growth, but I am afraid of fixing a game that isn't broke. Just log onto any SWG server for an example of how that will go. This game is great the way it is, sure it's small potatoes compaired to WOW, but it's making money and the player base is continually growing.

doesn't that make eve intresting for peopel who are more intrested in manufacturing and the logistical nightmare around them :) Eve is a game with more depth then most other online games, this comes with a steep learnig curve and unfortunatly the people who trive in griefing others will do so. Best advice i can give new players is either stay in the noob corp for a few months or seek 0.0 corps with a public channel, most of them will have no problem answering questions or helping out

Not asking for it by a long shot. But, CCP is a corporation, just like in game. They are in the end about making money. I would rather see them come out with a seperate game, rather than dumb this one up so much that the hordes of idiots swamop in and ruin the game. (the game seems to have enough as is )

Well, CCP is making another MMO.
An interesting fact to note as well as that Eve's gorwth has been pretty much a slow-but-steady stream upwards since 2003. And there has never been a time with any massive subscription dropoff (despite what certain trolls might say).

Maybe have a marketplace option to sort by meta-level? So new players can easily see only basic t1 items, or T2, or Faction, or all. The tutorial would explain what t1/faction/t2 items are, and show how to turn off/on the filter. Canceling the tutorial would automatically cancel the filter. Also, a slot-type filter would be nice for new players. Show only High/Med/Low/Rigs/No-Slot items.
Might make things a bit less overwhelming in the beginning. Also, some sort of visual clue on icons as to which slot they are used in would be great.

Originally by: Balthazer Yeah, I actually chuckled at the thought.
But the hard facts are that this game would not appeal to the broad market place. When people get in the game it is far to overwhelming for them. The tutorials are great, but the in depth, realistic nature of Eve Online cannot pull the shear volume of the other mmorpgs (imo). Personally I find that a good thing, however on the flip side, I will not ever be able to get my wife to play this. I got her to play WoW, and bring up a 70 character. This is far to complicated (btw she is working on her doctarate degree)
While I can understand your sentiments, I must say that Eve is a very niche game, not everyone will or can like this game and as such it would kill the game we know if there was such an eve light or such.
I can assure you however that there are really good people out there in space, they hate to hear people scream, and will do a lot to prevent it.
Have a word with me ingame or join *REX public* in game.

well, if you call T2-perfect fittet HACs or Commands against Frigs/Cruisers with creepy Gunnery/Missile/Drone skills that barly can fit low-end med-guns "not that outclassed" then i don't know what you name it .
A can of Veldspar means hell of alot ISK for a 2 week old char (not alt, new char). If he then loses his hauler ship AND the can and maybe get poded with his implants - then the point is reached where many new players stop.
CCP could earn a lot more real-money if they somehow prevent this "I'm bored let's kick some newbs buts with my ubar ship".

OP:
I suggest you save this thread and re-read it again after one year of playing (if you survive that long)
And you will probably lol :)
I actually strongly disagree with Eve "push you to join a corp" method! I stayed in an NPC corp for such a long time and made tons of friends and enjoyed helping others with what I had learnt.
Eve should suggest new players stay in the NPC corp for a month or so first, and maybe send an 'eve-mail' to them after a few months encouraging them to move on! and maybe suggest the player asks themselves a few pertinant questions like "have you bought your learning skills :)"
Liked the idea about the market :)

i've quit eve a month or so ago for a period of some 6 months. bought a wow account, and played it and even like it. i've created the suround allmost as in eve, teamspeak, cool guys in corp/guild, group hunting/missions etc.. but it was just too.. easy i guess. i could cross from one part of wow to another wearing the best armour gold could buy, to fight the strongest players there, and get killed.. just to resurect at a nearby graveyard with all of my stuff!, and fight again :).. eve doesn't allow that.. there's no resurect. no rpg server with strict rules about who can fight and where. there's no safe place in eve even in the highest sec rating places. there's no law in eve, no freedom, no justice, no trust.. untill you realise you're trying to make eve be an oposite to what life is to us, when eve is nothing but a cold, hard, cruel, clone of real life. it sucks and its unfair and my sick twisted perverted mind loves it and wants more of it every day.. .. i still have a wow account. i play it sometimes just to take a peak to what fantasy looks like.. then quickly back to real life of dark and beautifull eve. i hate how much i love you, dam it..

Hi all, first post woohoo!!
I'm only 3 days in so I prolly shouldnt be talkin, but here's my two isk (hehe)
I LOVE that from day 1 you have to watch your back. Personally im so sick and tired of being treated like a moron from all the other mmo's My first mmo was UO, which, before they messed it up, was a pretty cold, dark, noob-unfriendly sandbox world. Every mmo after that your hand-held through the game til the end. and wow? Lets not even start there. You die so what, u spawn 10 feet away with nothing lost, whats the point?
I like to know from the second i enter the world I have to watch my back and make smart decisions. I like that around every corner can lie death, and death can hurt. I like that I have to becareful of scams, tricks, traps, deciet etc and I love that I have the option to scam, trick, trap and deciet.
I agree this game wont ever be mainstream like wow, but thats EXACTLY what makes this game good. Gamers these days have grown soft and just want everything to be easy, uber and shiney. People in WOW have 100 mods, for telling them EXACTLY where to go and what to do at exactly what second, how is that fun? and they STILL whine that its too hard. If this game was changed to make it more mainstream, it would give up what makes it so special in the first place.

Welcome to Eve.
I started this game 21 months ago while I was 14. Not many 14 year olds have the patience to even get through the tutorial of Eve. I got through it (after a couple hours) and immediately fell in love with the game.
Its huge sandbox feel is amazing. Your hand is never held in the game. Yes it is good to have a veterans advice sometimes (hey, send me an evemail anytime and ill help you). There are so many things to do in the game, and not one of them that involves undocking has zero risk. There is always someone out to kill you and take your money, it never gets old.
Don't worry, you do not need to remake your character. That CEO is more then likly full of hot air. If he is not you can petition for harassment.
Hope you the best in eve. Ill see you in space.

Edited by: xOm3gAx on 24/09/2007 19:11:40 First welcome to eve-online !
Second, dont let them bother you if they are threatening you etc etc. Thats everywhere in eve and 90% of the time they are just blowing steam. If they wardec you it costs them isk to do so and thus defeats the purpose of using you to begin with. And even if they did wardec you just make sure you use cheap ships such as frigs and teamwork a handful of frigs is more then a match for almost any battleship and certainly for almost anything smaller then a battleship. Kill of a few of them and they will leave u alone for sure.
Never trust anyone in eve no matter who they are or how much of a "friend" they are in rl or not.
Edit: by the way dont let someones age ingame bother you. The guy with the most sp in eve doesnt even have any gunnery or missile skills to speak of beyond the basics. Its easy to be deadlier then someone as old as myself just train the right skills and focus. I've got 42mil sp all of which is specialized but with far less you can be just as effective if your flying the right ships =) -----------

Troll.
1)Even if one did not have a direct connection to the internet in '94 MOST tech savy just dialed into their work's modem pool and then connected to the internet
2)Even in '94 most universities provided internet access and there where plenty of free internet provider (text only, but then web pages where text only anyways)
3) tradewars is not an internet game but a BBS game. That's from before the internet sonny. All you needed was a modem and the phone number of a bbs with tradewars installed.

Sheesh...
And here I was just browsing through the forums before taking some advice I got a while back about posting something in the player corporation recruitment forums. I had sat down determined to give player run corps a fair shake before either quiting EVE or returning to life in an NPC corp. Then I read this thread. I've known from the start of playing this game that trust is oft abused and a very rare commodity. I also read the tutorial and the new player forums where ôjoin a player corpö is repeated over and over and over again. At this point I wish there was a better way to weed out the truly bad corporations so I am not waisting my game time on them. Perhaps a way that previous members could rate or review a corporation when leaving. That way you might get a glimpse into what the corporation was/is like.
As for the original poster's experience, it recounts the worst I've seen in reading the forums so far. Unfortunately similar experiences seem to be common with varying degrees of severity. I can only begin to imagine how many stories out there go untold and are simply punctuated with a ôcancelö button. Plus, as can be seen by the responses here, there is no shortage of people who seem to condone the activities of your previous CEO as a filter of sorts I suppose. Perhaps to make sure new members of the community are washed in using the most abrasive steel wool that can be found, just to make sure they can take the abuse that may be coming.
Good luck in your future en devours, whatever they may be.

You do indeed have to be careful in eve, its a harsh world.
On the other hand, I have an offer for you and the other members who were treated badly. I run a corporation myself, and everytime we recruit a new player they always give us positive feedback about how helpful we are. I would like to extend my hand to offer you a poition within 'Suicidal Creatures' as well.
You are of course more than welcome to come spend some time with us in our public channel "SCUM Public" to get a feel for us, and decide if you would like to join. Invite any members from your old corporation to come along as well.

I would have to agree with a previous poster about waiting a while to get into a player corp. yes they are great and you have good relationships within them. But I think new players need to be generaly become familiar with EVE itself and what its like.
I found my current corp by shouting out in local in the area where I decided to make my home... I love it.
And truth to tell I would never recomend to any new player to sell your stuff according to what your ceo tells you... Sell it on the market until you trust the corp and the corp members. Any self respecting newb corp would encourage you to do this in my ever so humble opinion. MKS Directorate Home
