The idea in a nutshell:
Get 30 kestrels together, pop industrial ships in empire, other players in your organization scoop the loot.
Specifics:
A tanked ity 5 or other top tier Tech 1 industrial ship is around 15000 effective hit points. A kestrel, with a 1 day old character piloting it, can have an alpha of 500 damage. 30 of these kestrels, at a cost of 4 standard missle launchers, 1 warp disruptor, 1 sensor booster, 1 bcs and 4 guristas bloodclaw light missiles each is less than 200,000 isk (after insurance kickback on lost ship). 30 of these kestrells cost 6 million isk. (and you will loot some of this cost back as well when they go pop)
Set up the kestrels just off grid of a gate in a pipe system near an empire hub, (have a friendly hauler to scoop loot as well). get a scout in the next system, on the gate. (he's through the gate to the pipe system, and across that system at the other gate relative to the kestrels). Scout has a passive targeter, ship, and cargo scanners fitted. He scans incoming industrial ships looking for a ship carrying > 60 mil isk. My limited experience has shown a ship will drop 10-33% or so of it's cargo and modules, but whatever the actual number is, the idea still seems sound to me. Once a suitable target is found, get the kestrels and hauler on top of the incoming gate.
Keep everybody in noob corps to avoid wardecs. Go out and rat to keep sec status high, since recycling alts to avoid sec status hits is against the eula. Get a TS server. Make and split isk based on high sec piracy.
I have seen bs bpo's in haulers, not to mention loads of megacyte etc. This seems like it could be profitable. Is anyone doing this? Am I forgetting something crucial to this hair-brained scheme?

It's a lot easier to organize (less) people in destroyers/cruisers/stealth bombers which is why you see these ships being used most for suiciding haulers. 30 people means splitting loot 30 ways, most people are not into that.
It also means 30 people who could have an alt hauler there to 'steal' your loot.
It doesn't take much training at all to be in much more effective ships, it also makes ratting the sec status back easier.

Use bigger ships. Grinding sec status back up is rather stinky process and that way all of your 30 gankers get sec hit. It's an exploit to delete alts with low sec and start new ones with no negative sec to keep doing that. Below sec -5 your kestrel pilots don't last anymore in hi sec and you need to grind up sec to keep using them.
It's more effective to do it in caracals.

Edited by: Treguvius on 23/09/2007 17:01:43 Broken Link. I posted this for some useful feedback. Thanks for the cogent replies. So you can use bigger ships and this still works? Even 2 or 3 bc's is gonna run 50mil+. Do you just look for haulers carrying more valuable stuff?

You are ignoring insurance. Consider platinum insurance cost and payout in your suicide ganking calculations. Battleships turn out to be not that much more expensive than cruisers, and battlecruisers are among the most expensive suicide taxis.
Still, if you pick good targets +- a few tens of M won't make much of a difference.
