Using the ingame map and ICSC JumpPlaner, the distance from QYZM-W (Northern most system) to LX5K-W (Probably southern most system? Hard to tell) is about 130 Light years. LBGI-2 (Western most system?) to RT64-C (Eastern most system?) is aprox 105 Light years

It's big. I mean, really big. You may think going down to the local chemist is a long trip. But I'm talking BIG (not affiliated with the corp).
I used to get It. Then It changed. Now I don't even know what It is.

It is nowhere near big enough. It would be great if it was 150 000 light years across.

EVE: not actually a galaxy. it's only about 150 light years from end-to-end. It's actually a dense star cluster or something.
I dunno. Every time we discuss physics in EVE, the devs kill an exotic dancer. Please, think of the exotic dancers. - The game is not the problem. The problem is that you are not adapting to the game.

Well, Back In The Day (sometime during the week after NA release), some buddies and I warped a ship clean out to one of the far corners of the EVE universe. We then set autopilot to the other corner and let it run. It arrived about 4-5 hours later.
EVE's gotten bigger since then, so... let's just say a long, long time.

And if you read up on the Scientific Articles, there's a passable explanation to why this is.

Edited by: RigelKentaurus on 23/09/2007 15:19:40 I agree, we need more space, but we don't need more systems. Actually I think each system should be bigger, alot bigger, so that claiming even a single one of them would be something significant. I mean, even all the asteroids of EVE would look like dust compared to the main asteroid belt in the Solar system. Then player would fight for planets instead of systems, and even the biggest alliances would be able to control only a few constellations.
But even if CCP manages to to allow multiple nodes to a single system, EVE is way too old to face such a radical change. _________
Someday, EVE might look like this. |

The only stars you can go to, are the ones connected by gates. So, any number you are getting here is not the actually size of the galaxy, just the parts we can get to.

I wonder what would happen if Earth decided it wanted the Eve cluster and invaded..... Nice story arc for missions - getting into RP fleets to counter small squads of powerful Earth based warships.... be interesting to see how that worked out, I would guess that they would be only a bit more advanced than the Jove as their "dark age" lasted 3 centuries. I used to think that Eve was in one of the smaller galaxies in the local galactic cluster (Andromeda + Milky Way plus a few other small ones).

Eve is set in a star cluster which is part of a super cluster which is part of galaxy. A galaxy can contain many super clusters and in turn those can contain many clusters. Galaxies can contain 10 million up to a trillion stars.
According to the lore of Eve we are still in the Milky Way galaxy. We are only in a different star cluster than the one earth is in. The diameter of the Milky Way is around 100 000 light years, therefore Eve cluster is just a small part thereof. We are also probably still in the Orion arm in which earth is. I doubt the original races had the longevity or the ability to travel 6500 LY to the closest next arm (Perseus). The closest other galaxy Canis Major is 25000 LY away.
Another poster have measured Eve cluster to be 105 LY at most. Use that for perspective against the figures above. We are mixing fact and fiction quite well in this thread? Almost makes Eve seems real ... |

They used a natural wormhole to get to EVE, i.e. it could be anywhere. I can't remember if there was any backstory about knowing the location of EVE... anyone?

i worked this out once. the galaxy is 127.2 AUs across (north to south) using a pimped out Helios travelling at about 21 AU/s. assuming you are in warp constantly and have infinite cap it'll take about 3 and a half days.
i can dig out my calculations if anyone wants to dispute this.

I intentionally ignored the wormhole part. The backstory descriptions and explanations are inconsistent on this point. In one part it states "Humans arrived through a natural wormhole" and in another part it states its a made thing. Now this means the gate either harnessed a natural wormhole, or its a artificial one created by gate technology like the other ancient ones. Keep in mind the lore says humans did not invent gates, we simply found them and copied them. If its an artificial one the other point is bound to be within STL travel range, so my previous assumptions applies. If it was a harnessed natural wormhole, then my previous assumptions still holds true - Eve is still a game played on a server located on Earth ... But for fiction sake, then yes I agree Eve cluster could be anywhere, and probably also in a different time or parallel universe.

This ofcourse is also relative.
One might say that an elephant, relative to earth, isn't that big, but to a mouse, an elephant and earth are relatively, atleast in some measure, the same sized.
Now if we take the mouse and elephant, they are relatively same sized also, if compared to earth.
Now lets put the elephant, the mouse and earth next to the sun. Relatively similarly minuscule again, in relation to the sun.
Now let's take the mouse, the elephant, the earth, the sun, put them in a station container, shake it all about and do the hokeypokey and there we go....EVEverse.

There was a natural wormhole found, and the Eve gate was created to allow the ships to go through the gate. The acceleration gates are another story, those are the ones that were "found". And most likely, those would be created by the original human settlers of New Eden.
There is fiction about the Eve gate itself in the intro movie in the game, and in the Backstory link under "Scientific Articles."
