In our corp newbie recruits don't get any access, but are encouraged to join on hunts. As they may not be so familiar with the style of combat, they'd die if they fight too soon. So we keep them in frigs with ship/cargo scanners for a while until they've matured. They do the scanning for us and observe how we operate. Eventually they get to help with combat, before being upgraded to a full time pilot.

Well in MOST stories pirates stick around and kill all resistance even at great odds usually without suffering great losses themselves. Pirates are rogues that "laugh" in the face of danger, but not these apparantly.

Do you believe every extravagant story you read?  Yes.. Let them all laugh in the face of danger, and become cannon fodder. They're theiving, looting, pillaging, criminals. Not idiots. (of course, this being a broad generalization, there are some exceptions.)
