Edited by: El Covah on 24/09/2007 08:51:48 Not very long but at least a little bit interesting. It is available in german only and about similiar technologies with creating single-sharded games (e.g. E-O) and financial applications.

Edited by: Vitrael on 24/09/2007 08:53:18 These are English-only boards. Why would you even bother posting it with no translation?

Because even though these are English only boards the majority of EVE players are European and therefore probably a good number speak German?

I did not mean to sound like a jerk, it just seemed obvious to me that most of the Euro's on these boards would be able to read that no problem. I am an ignornant American however so it is all greek to me also lol.

To be fair to myself, 93% of EU students study English in lower secondary level. Only 18% learn German (outside of Germany) so I think I have a legitimate complaint. Thanks Wikipedia.

That's not a good article. It contains lots of inaccuracies and errors, for example it suggests that CCP "have switched to SSD storage", while in fact they only use RAMSANs to store performance-critical parts of the database.
It also says that EVE currently supports 400 people in one place (grid?), which is more accurate than what CCP has claimed. ;-)
isn't it funny how some people advocate both GTC<=>ISK trades and EVE being superior due to its cruelty and costly losses, when they use the former to circumvent the latter?

I didn't read the article (i know a bit of german, but i absolutely hated the language when i had to learn it, so...) but i have to say, sharding eve, fails...
1. It's already "sharded", multiple servers, solar systems are not hosted by the same server/cpu/whatever. 2. It takes away the sole being of EVE. An huge unsharded server. Imaging having only 1000 people on each server, that would make it as boring as hell...

(Native german speaker here)
I didn't find the article to eb that insightfull.
Very brief summary: MMO developers are trying to bring their games to "one world" instead of seperate shards. One thing which CCP did with EVE from the beginning, therefore it gets mentioned there.
The only intersting part is where they say MMO developers could learn a lot from financial markets/software for those markets. After all, a place like NASDAQ e.g. is a big "game" with hunderts of thousands player playing online at the same time where e.g. lags are big no no, as one might benefit/lose from a lag.
OTOH, games like EVE need to implement "intelligent resource management". Problem right now: you (as the developer) don't know in advance when and where a big fleet battle will happen. You needed process in places to move resources from unused parts of the EVE wprld to the battlefield for the time needed and redistribute them back afterwards. Techniques like this are very intersting for other areas of software development as well.
Intersting fact mentioned in the article: there are currentyl up up 150 million (I guess database) transactions per day in EVE.
