Title says it all.
I was watching Alien: Resurrection today (don't ask why) and it suddenly occured to me to ask a question that I guess I just never thought of before. So WHERE ARE THEY?!?! Eve needs aliens! I'm not talking Earth and Beyond style where the giant slugs "shoot" missles and and magically "drop" reactors. I'm also not talking about HOOOHA scary aliens either that appear as you open that bulkhead and leave you with a and then a hole in the head. I'm talking about crazy swarms we must fight back like in Pitch Black or (lord forgive me) Lost in Space. Or maybe the "intelligent" kind who want to take over and kill all of humanity just because (like I said, intelligent). Where are they?? I mean yeah, the joves are freaky, but they are like Haloween freaky and we need silicon-based freak. I mean CHOOTLE all we have are roids out here. PORK, I'd settle for alien hemroids! Or maybe giant, roid-dwelling worms that sleep with their mouths open and don't notice when you fly into them and land in their stomach. *sigh*

Well for the EVE galaxy to have aliens it would need to be realistic. EVERY SINGLE STAR having several planets is NOT realsitic to begin with. Being able to live in the middle of a galaxy and not die from radiation is NOT realistc (I think...) and heh... Stargates and warp is prolly not realistic either but what the hell...
Im not saying that it wouldnt be cool with aliens in Eve but its just not the way the game is created to be.

Edited by: XpoHoc on 16/02/2004 19:51:24 I think it would be interesting to have some alien contact. But not before the whole galaxy is open and we were introduced to tech level 5.
Maybe those aliens would introduce a whole new tech level and finally tell us where the hell we are and where the Milkyway is.

You need to stop watching Star Trek exclusively :-) How can you like just humans and no aliens!?! Which space sci-fi have you been watching? I mean jeez, we have POOFing aliens here on earth who abduct our cows and stuff and there aren't any in Eve? Well, I suppose they might not have hit the new world yet but we gotta have something besides fedo. And yes j0, I have noticed about the joves. But then again, the joves never want to come out and play :-)

This would be a cool way to pull the Joviens into the game. Their space gets attacked by the classic starship troopers bug aliens, they spawn at every gate, ever belt, every station. Players have to wipe out about 50,000 of them before they leave :D ------------------

One thing, we call them "aliens", however, we are the visitors here. This is their home, not ours, and they have held this territory since before our home solar system coalesced into planets. Be cautious of where you sail, friend...

Well I heard there was first contact, but foolishly the Aliens chose to appear in Curse. What was even worse was that they happened to approach some industrial types who were mining.....by the time they got their translators working all they could make out was "leave", "spy", "podded", "Evolution" and "exploit". All very confusing.
Not put off by this unusually hostile contact they tried again in Fountain. They had intercepted transmissions previously that led them to believe it was a long established and stable alliance of corporations with different ethnical backgrounds, a real cross-section of the inhabitants of this galaxy. Imagine their shock when they went in flying a flag of peace only to have said flag incinerated by bovine pirates. They beat a hasty retreat.
Before finally using their tech MMXIV to transdimentionally fold out of our space and time, it has been reported that an art/graphical programmer who had come along to record the image of our races into their archives gave to a "n00b" a tech 5 mining laser, who promptly sold it on to a mega corp for an undisclosed figure (believed to be in the hundreds of millions). Concord are investigating the reports and are believed to be bartering with the mega corp in question, offering a tech 2/3 BP for the tech 5 laser.
So it looks like all we are left with now are the space amoebas...those crazy little critters .

this game isnt like other crap out there, its more out there to what RL would turn out to be, as we would take over everything and supporting current events of no real or fact alien interaction.
now as far is engineering stuff that might be like aliens that is a diff story, take the example in Deus Ex 2 I dont want to give it away if you havenĘt played that game, but ya they put it nicely into the game hehe

In case anyone's interested:
Isaac Asimov is believed to be the first writer to conceive of the all-human galaxy (in his Foundation series). He did so for complicated here-on-Earth reasons which I don't need to go into here; but he did, much later, create a plausible justification for it. Plausible-but-not-necessarily-scientifically-accurate justification follows:
It is believed that the effect of radiation causing DNA to mutate, may be partly or even mostly responsible for the evolutionary process; if such random mutations happen by chance to be useful, the creature that has it prospers; if not, it dies, or does less well than its competitors. Asimov conjectured that for some reason, the Earth happened to be richer in radioactive minerals than is normally the case for other planets elsewhere in the galaxy; perhaps Sol was passing through the remains of a supernova cloud as the system was formed, and is therefore concentrated in heavy metals to an unusual degree. Therefore, the radiation-induced mutation of life forms occurred at a vastly greater rate here on Earth than anywhere else in the galaxy; and when humans got out there to explore it, they found moss-like green stuff and some sticky goo on the sides of rocks, but very little else.
There's no scientific reason at all to suppose that this IS true, but afaik there's no scientific reason to suggest that it CAN'T be. Possibly we are the only ones around.
I suspect that CCP simply focused their efforts on other parts of the game, rather than either creating completely alien races (easier to have five different types of human, at least they all ARE human) or come up with a plausible justification for why there aren't any. I'm sure the Good Doctor wouldn't have objected to them hijacking this one, as long as they credit the guy for being the first to come up with it.

Edited by: Amin on 17/02/2004 01:33:52 Its also quite feasible that the area in which Eve is based in, was originally was not capable of supporting life. Only when humans can through the evegate with their great wealth and technology, did they terraform planets to make them habitable. Hence why there is no "indigenous" species the Eve area of space.
Of course they could exist, but there has just never been contact with them. Those closed regions east of empire space do look suspicious....

ya do you know why there is very little to no numbers ever for putting up any sifi or evolution statistics or just plain numbers? well it doesnĘt look too good, some scientists have done that, and it turns out that if you give X amount of say billion trials per sec, and have X billion of years for it to happen, that based on what was said there is no chance for things to happen as described by evolution theories thats another reason why you never see any math stats at all for that area, just words. Btw you can try that your self with basic growth formula, and some values that are current or avg, and the time, and put those all together you will see which numbers are more close to which theory.
Also if you know what it takes for cells and other things that make up the basic living blocks, you would know that for that to happen randomly there is not enough time in the hole universe for this to happen, even if you give it billions of years. Because it is so complex and so many things have to go exactly into place, that its almost unthinkable. Kind of interesting that nobody ever showed this to the public, until now.
We can all come and post theories and things that seem to work and not etcą but we donĘt need that here
anyway i like how eve is, it leaves all that alone and focuses on small area what we know to be true and what can happen and put it in a game, which is really cool
you get more players that way then going full sifi, and spending useless time creating it, when you can just do it based on humans and put more content in other area's. It is a very smart approach in dev a game.

LOL were will you get all those infinite resources? Were do you get all the monkeys? And everything that leads to them LOLą LOL the universe isnĘt infinite, it was thought to have a start right? So its finite, so you cant have that many trials to start with.
Also were talking already with the basic living blocks of life, but were did you get those to start with? And if you think about it how many chances and billions or billions of years would you need to just come up with the universe its self? Even if you want to assume that lets say you got some form of life form, how do you explain all the other random events that could take place and squish it at one time, and your back at the drawing board, and do that to the hole universe creation as wellą
Everything is so well done, and things will only fit specific patterns doing something, you cant just put some random stuff and have it interact or form anything, were did these rules come from? Why is it that everything is so uniform and smooth throughout the universe having similarities and yet big enough and significant gaps between areas that are just unexplained.
If you start to go farther and farther out, and see how everything is almost perfect and is so well in balance with everything else, how many chances do you need for things to just happen like that?
Even if you start to think of all the assumptions to lead to something to happen, you will not have enough billions of years to write all the assumptions down and say well IF each one happened just right then this would comeą what do we have? Just some theories that took so many years to come up that have nothing tangible but only an imagination to them.
Kind of starts to make your head hurt eh?

I donĘt know about you, but for me its much easier to believe in things that are simpler then that and have something more tangible and flows and fits in and has some meaning to it.
It doesnĘt matter how you express it, it just makes more sense that there is something else that exists out side our physical world, untouched by time and this 3D world, and you can call it whatever you like, the fact is it made everything and we are here, and the universe is here and we are learning about our selves and this universe and the higher we go we see more and understand more, and with that in mind we see that the idea that we had of the universe self created and repeating like some broken record to fall apart, and not fit in the rules that we observe in this universe the more intelligent and knowledgeable we get.
We didnĘt create anything, we simply observed and discovered the things around us. We know that time is another dimension so to speak and this universe fallows it, thatĘs all we can know, we can speculate and dream about everything else that can beyond that.
THAT is pretty much obvious, throughout history. All this said without any biased side to any form of believe or religion etc, its just what has been observed and discussed, I am more then sure that a lot of individuals would agree on the above.
Also lets not go off-topic here, as far as eve goes, I still say that the devĘs or whoever came up with the ideas in this game did a good job because it stays clear of many issues and controversial areaĘs that we would have in these threads just like this one every time, if this game was done in a different manner and had aliens etc. That IMO at least why the game is like this, its also I think time that people started to focus on us humans more then other things that we know very little about, it just keeps a focus and a lot easier to do RP IMO again.

The monkey analogy was an example, u didnt seem to understand the point. Your saying that our universe is perfectly fitted together and conveniently well balanced.
With an infinate amount of time, with an infinate number of universes created and failed. Eventually, a universe would be created, where everything is perfectly balanced, like ours.
How we got talking about this, i have no diea

Were and how would it infinity keep trying to create its self?
Also point to me an universe that is half way in the process? That also begs the question why do we have gaps in areaĘs why not see things half way in processes or in steps of going from one area to another? Why wouldnĘt you see other universes around? Or others being destroyed etcą if they are similar holding same properties then we would have some clue or view?
This type of questioning will never stop, and you can always ask how did that come about and how did something before that come aboutą etc its something that doesnĘt quite fit, its also hard for us to explain or even talk about infinity being us finite.
And you canĘt have the ōmatter can not be created or destroyedö with many of these theories around. If that is to be true then a lot of theories are just thrown out the window. Based on what we see, there is a constant cause and effect, and the question is why?
IMO i think its just a matter between were ppl draw the line and were others wish to continue to think of something elseą IMO we could never create or destroy matter because we are made of the same principles if that was to happen we could self create our selves from nothing and would be all knowing etcą and wouldnĘt be here asking these questions.
One can think of course that if something else can create/destroy matter well that makes sense, as far as understanding that thing well your out of the league and thatĘs were other people draw the line.
To me its not a matter of evolution vs creation, its about were you draw the line and how far are you willing to except things until you happy with some explanation or some reasoning.
this once again shows the possible reason as to why they/ccp/devĘs limited or donĘt have aliens in the game, besides the fact of doing something totally different the other devĘs would do from a space type of game.
I think there is no need to talk about this here though, unless ppl wish to there are other forums/websites and even IRC but i still had IMO a point as to why ccp/dev's did eve they way the did it
if you want to chat about this farther im sure you could drop by xan irc, im always there and we can take this on there, so long as others dont mind, or just priv chat hehe
reason to not continue these talks is simple that it is OT support Idea: QuickInfo an alternative to ShowInfo

There are aliens in Eve, you're seeing it from a physical point of view as oposed to a social/psychological.
Pirates-carebears-aliens! (to each other at least ) plus the various others out there.

That also begs the question why do we have gaps in areaĘs why not see things half way in processes or in steps of going from one area to another? Why wouldnĘt you see other universes around? Or others being destroyed etcą if they are similar holding same properties then we would have some clue or view?
The nature of those questions make no sense at all. Just cos u cant "see" universes being created and destroyed doesnt mean there havnt been some that have existed before this one.

Everything is alien to us though, based on the meaning of alieną eheh even super natural being would be alien, or those ppl who are crossing the borders are aliens too LOL
Another reason that came to mind is, that I think at some point or another CCP/DEVĘs plan to have everything be in RP and interact with all kinds of stuff, if created sifi aliens it would screw the game too much as it would too much of inbalance, most of the time if you think alien you think of something higher then humans, and not something that is as smart as a dog or whateverą
With a lot of those and the basic reason to make something different and go a bit off track then the standard sifi this game is unique and stands out a bitą
ThatĘs what I think, and a lot of others would agree I think, I mean we have the issues of balance as it is, try to make something alien and yet in balance with the game would be too hard, and if you lower it to the same playing field people would say that is dumb and it sucks etcą Keeping it human based and not too different on the playing field was the best idea I think, and others said that already of course.

There ARE alien "aliens" in SciFi once you get veyond derivative works.
Take say Niven's Kzinti (Known Space), or his Moaties (A Mote in god's Eye/ The Gripping Hand (A Mote Arround Murchenson's Eye)).
Or John Ringo's Alldenata universe...

Alright ... speaking as a scientist, science is concerned with the nature and beginnings of the Universe; in the how, where, and when. It is not remotely interested, and has nothing whatsoever to say, on the subject of why, or by whom. Science, by definition, can't deal with things outside of our universe.
Speaking as a Christian (yup, sorry, but I am one ) ...Drutort's argument simply reduces God to a three letter syllable meaning "I do not know." If you must post a religious argument, at least make it a good one.

dude there is no point in talking/posting this, i tried to make some general comments on things but its just going OT, and your going to cause this thread to get locked. Also to reply to your ōseeö ok so you are changing the theory now that itĘs a linear process? And not a multi process happening at same time??? BAH and who gets to choose which one is right? And which way it does happen? Naturally speaking if you have a bunch of stuff and let it all go lose it wouldnĘt go in a nice linear line, and repeat nicely you would see things happening left and rightą
As far as my comments/replies:
i was just showing how pointless so many of those theories, and how we were taught in the old days, and how stupid it was and now how its being changed into other pointless theories and ideas, and the old ways of the teachings that few scientists who thought they knew what they were talking about forced that on to us, and i would have to say the same with many religions, trying to stay in the neutral grounds. And how a lot of theories and ideas were forced to be accepted as some kind of fact or the only answer. <-- has to do more with the educational system and the historical events in sci and religioną
That was all that my replies comments were saying.
And next time please read my hole replies, its so easy to just quote one part and they try to comment but you havenĘt read the rest of it, and would see that there is no real need to comment at times.
If you would have read all of my comments/replies you would find your self being: one who only looks up to the universe its selfą IMO that is were evolutionists are, I have looked at the universe its self and took in consideration of something beyond thatą something along the lines of creation or whatever ppl want to tag it. As you would have known from my other comments that its not about religion or even sci or evolution its how far you want to go, and were do YOU draw the line?

lol you never asked me, what i believe but if you must know i am the same, i just tried to keep it unbiased and let the individuals put whatever they want as far as the meaning...
for me i donĘt need any sci to believe in what i do, im just amazed that sci can now point in that area and actually prove it a bit more so then evolution, thatĘs just for me.
of course this is reply to you, and i was trying to not show my personal beliefs because other individuals would then not read my replies in the same manner at all.
oh and as far as some numbers though to some it wouldnĘt matter, i saw some programs going and i was quite happy with what i saw, it was quite fascinating and im no scientist at all hehe... you might like this link, though the program its self is very good, the website IMO is limited in the info and stuff that goes on the program.
http://creationevidence.org/cemframes.html
also the coolest thing about the religious part is, that we get to live and view the things that are happening today, and of course if ppl should read anything or when the time it happens revelations is the place to look at, and maybe we will see those things unfold right in front of our eyes, quite amazing.
Hey I tried to be unbiased but now the cat is out of the bag, its another reason as to why I like eve, if anyone wants to know my own opinion its because its only going with humans, as I personally donĘt have an issue with futuristic human advancement.

Edited by: Baldour Ngarr on 17/02/2004 04:24:54 All religions are true, for a given value of the word "true."
This is really not an argument I want to get into, suffice it to say that science neither proves nor disproves any religion, nor has it ever tried to. It couldn't if it tried; science has nothing to say on the subject of "outside this world" because science IS about this world.
To get back to the original topic, as well as Asimov's plausibly scientific justification for there being no intelligent alien life, you now have a plausibly religious explanation as well; God created the entire universe for the benefit of mankind, and therefore there's nobody in it but us.
They're both true - for, as above, a given value of "true".

Well ever since MASS killed the rogue Jove Admiral's BS to get the 1st Miner 2 orig BP, Joves have been afraid to leave their isolation. I'm not sure whether this fear is part of the Jovian disease or whether they are just kinda "sissy". In the U.S.A., aliens are seen with relative frequency, albeit almost always in trailer courts. So I think Joves should have more of a role in the game, people have been waiting a long time for them.

On the deep theoretical discussion side... I remember reading "A Brief History of Time" my Stephen Hawking. He said that perhaps the only reason the universe is the way it is, with everything working together to produce life in the mose improbable way, is that if it were any different, we wouldn't be here to observe it. It could have formed any other which way. But if it had, we wouldn't be here to wonder about it.
On the topic at hand. PLEASE GOD NO V'RIX! I could actually read that damn v'rix code after about a week of their irritating scans. or should I say: 3 H1T2 TH2 FR21K3NG V'R3X!

If you want to be technical, that's several different 'alien species' within the game fiction.
