I'd like to see the map being as configurable as possible. Mapping my assets, corp assets is one thing. I'd also like to be able to survey and plan my mining trips using the thing. Maybe show surveys (roid types, belt status, is it empty or respawned yet) of belts where I drop a bookmark.
Lots of things can be shown, not just war stuff.

If this has been said im sorry, but there were to many posts to read in a small time.
this sounds good and i would like to add a few small things.
Lables and arrows, showing squads and there movement at specific time in a animated fasion. Say if the main FC comes up with a plan he can recored it and reshow it later.
Ability for all members in the chat, fleet commander, squad commanders, to save the animated battle plans.
Real time updates.

I think that Sovereignity should be sent as cloud, not as star colours. That way, You may get more info at the same map. Say, past 1h kills+sovereignity.
We strictly need some measuring instruments, if someone remember Master Of Orion II, there was pretty useful F9 button. In EVE it may be option to measure distances and routes.
In example, select one system - Your preferred start system, press a desired key and start moving Your cursor over stars. Plot line will follow Your cursor, draving both jump and gatepass paths with hint at end system, displaying distance in jumps and l.y.
Clicking star in that mode should add temporary waypoint, where Your path will be pinned. -- Thanks CCP for cu<end of sig> |

It would be nice to have input from agents (covert ships) in space so you can track enemy movement in ambulation mode. This could be really cool if you could direct engagements from within a station. So the covert ship signals its position automatically but needs to list info manually like 'large fleet 50% battleships'. I know you can use chat windows or teamspeak for this but its just nice to see the marker light up with the small text next to it. The text stays in position until deleted by the cov ops pilot or the map director.
This would add a little fog of war but gives a nice ring to it. Also its nice for corp buddies to watch the action unfold on a display without the need of being there as it happens.

How about in general to have a right-click on the map icon that would only bring up the system search so people don't have to go into the whole bloat map, and can just set nav points.

Not had time to read all posts so sorry if this is in already but two things spring to mind. A way to show 0.0 space in your corp &/or alliance blue/red/white colors so at a glance you can see how the space is owned on one part of the map, and a jump clone option that shows you where which NPC stations in high will offer jump clones to your or a corp member.
There is also a cool agent filter site that lets you ask it where say all the L4 agents for one corp are. A built in feature that can show you where these details on the map would rock as would being able to filter it both for ones you can use and other placers. That way you could find a good agent of one corp that your mate could use and then run missions with them to help there standing too.

I canŠt believe that you are actually considering adding another type of map to the allready bloated map system. That said, ItŠs good to hear that you are planning to do something about the in-game maps in Eve.
Please put the energy into revising the currents maps into a faster and more ellegant system instead. I donŠt see any reason why the suggested ideas here canŠt be incorporated into one map.

As i said:
The information is there. Scattered. And its way too much and confusing.
There must be a way to filter that stuff.
I thought a bit, maybe some sort of RegExp-Feature to filter stuff? I know, RegExps are considered dark arts, but they could be very useful. And on the plus side, there would be no need to include tons of filters for every purpose. Maybe just some presets that show stuff that is currently available too (ships destroyed in the last 1/24h, systems with deadspaces etc.) and the feature for players to create their own filters. Even if you use some sort of dark-arts-scriptlanguage for the filters, players will start to learn how to use them. And they could be extremely usefull for everyone, even for you Devs (in case you dont have things like "colour all jumproutes with >200 jumps/h red, rest green" or "colour all systems with more that 200 active pilots orange, with 300+ red" to show your gms and the players which node will crash next ;) )
Many things requested in this thread would be doable with custom-made filters applied to the starmap. Both f10 and ambulation-map! And it would probably cover situations that noone in this thread thought about yet.

i d like to see a set of corporation-maps, so to say, 5 maps which can be configured by the directors or moderators and where also information and notices can be stored. view could be restriced and allowed for each map by role of the corp-member .
so u can have e.g.
- one map which shows the corporation assets, just like systems with corp-owned starbases ( with the locations within system), location of offices, copr or alliance owned stations ( so to say a part of the information accessible via the corp-tab visualized on a map, with the possibility to add comments and notes ) ...
- one map where the market/production activities can be stored, just like production places, corp-sellers, the transport routes and notes who is responsible ...
- one tactical map for the fc where he can store information gathered by his scouts, mark important supply routes, hostile travel routes, ... so to say a map where he can plan an attack or campaign, accesible to his fellow fc's.
- one map for the capital pilots, with cynoroutes, engagement spots, rf timers, fuel-depots, responsible guys for cynos or depots ...
it would also be nice if there would be the general possibility to create an own map, just like a chat channel and invite other people to it, with moderator rights and such, so that inter-alliance/-corp communication could be enhanced and actions could be coordinated.

The #1 feature I think is missing from the F10 map (and would be needed in any new map system like a tact map) is the ability to filter your view.
We need the ability to show only certain regions. If I'm looking for stuff around me I don't need to see that reigon 50 jumps away. In fact since I must see that region it makes it MUCH harder to make sense of the area I'm looking at.
A similar feautre would be the ability to right click a system and choose "Hide systems more than N jumps away."

The one thing that I've always wanted with the F10 map that this Tactical Map desperately needs is the ability to isolate regions and constellations and view them in 3D. Maybe gray out the rest of the galaxy so you can barely see it but enough so that you still have some context, with the option to hide it completely.

Let all ships visible on the Overview of a corp recon/covops be viewable from the corp tactical map.
If I'm flying a recon in system ZZZ and see a Raven piloted by XYZ, my corp can view the map and see that Raven by XYZ is in system ZZZ.

Edited by: Macmuelli on 26/09/2007 21:51:25 A lot of Alliances infiltrated there enemies with spys in nearly all positions. This means m they got acess to Teamspeak( or whatever u use). So secret Tactics will not be a secret for a long time. If u plan strategys , only the fleetcomander shoud have the possibilty to give access to this informations. Means he can say, who will get infos etc.
It shud not be to simple. If u wanna have informations inside a system about the enemie fleet strength. U had to scan them down and need to be in 200 km range, to get a better view of them. So a covert op is a covert op. It'd be really nice to see EVE integrate the jump calculator at long last, and I think this might be the perfect opportunity to do it. It'd be very useful for planning allied movements, especially if alliance members are allowed to enter the corp office. - The game is not the problem. The problem is that you are not adapting to the game.

Hm.. allready mentioned, but for bringing those points up on your list ccp:
- a 2D Ombey like map without interesections (at constellation size or x-number of stars in it?!)- could/should even be very theoretical, like a programm-flow-chart(*) (call it ombey-map, if ya feel, he deserves it ;) - sharing of routes/warppoints with others - adjustable colors/brightness/thickness of objects/lines/dots drawn - any possible kind of information accessable through it, which doesn't brake the game - invisibility of stars/systems x-jumps away from system/route y
(*) this programm-flowchart ui could also be reused for some other areas as there are: - corp-managment (put member in roles, organigram, etc.) - pos-managment (reaction-flow-chart anyone?) - fleet-managment

Maybe I'm misreading (mis-skimming, actually), but I think if you could get a good tactical map system going it could solve alot of problems. Especially if it could focus down tight on the constelation or system level.
I kinda have in mind an Admiral Akkbar or however you spell that actually directing fleet operations from some representation of the fight, not actually in it. Let the information flow to a tactical terminal, so that a commander in his soverign captial can monitor gates and deploy reaction forces. No more blind camping duplicated at every gate. Split half the leadership bonuses and make them relevant to the tactical overview. Armor and shield should be on the ground, but information etc out to be from the tactical map operator in the command center.
The real advantage is that such a system could allow smaller, faster, tailored responses in stead of boring blob gate camping.
Give battlecrusiers and command ships some slight variant to make use of the field commanders info and instructions.
We need the generals back in the command centers with some kick-but maps that get this whole fleet thing going.

One thing I'd really like to see is some way for scout elements to report enemy movements/activities/gang positions what have you to the map when viewed with the proper settings.
This would give the map an old school moving ships/regiments along a war-map over which your commander can stare at endlessly, anxiously awaiting the latest news from the front kind of feel. But with holograms and other goodness.
Along a similar vein, allow shared notes to be tacked on to systems, constellations, and regions allowing manual updates. Could be as simple as "best ore spotted: arkanor"
Allow player alterations of maps to be saveable, allowing planning sessions to extend beyond one meeting and allowing player created additions to be dynamic.
Might be a terror to code though, just throwing ideas out since you asked for suggestions on functionality. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ -Alekseyev Ambassador, Fleet Commander, Council Member =The Royal Guard= "=TRG=Public" Channel www.rgrocks.com

Introduce probes that can give a constant 360 readout of roughly everything in a 20 au sphere. Allow this data to be fed back to somebody elses tatical map. Basically the only way this would be useful is if it allowed FCs to see ship types and general location of an enemy gang before contact.

20 au woud be nice but it woud make it much to simple for a scout.
He had to feel the "odem" of the enemie to get details of fleets to note it into this map.

Edited by: Klaatu Nikto on 27/09/2007 14:19:36 Features I'd like to see:
1. Add POS-related data available: - fuel, reactions (some love for starbase technicians), - defense, cynogens/jammers, jump bridges (with lines beetween linked ones) - ability to manually enter hostile POS locations and intel about it's structures
2. Add statistics from new killmail system (e.g. "our pilots killed in last 24h", "our pilots kills in last 24h")
3. Add ability to display multiple sovereignties at same time.
4. Make as many filters as you can imagine (including filtering manually entered data) with ability of making logical operations on it, possibly with ability to even filter pilots by roles they having, like "our starbase fuel technicians *in* (or *near*) systems we have POSes with fuel ro less than a day" etc... Consider giving 2 filtering options "simple" and "advanced".
5. Make option about map animations (like in F10 map) but make it working - "Instant" option in F10 map still does 2-3s animation including zooming and map rotating.
6. Scheduled events - ability of making timed notes like "Saturday, 14 eve-time, mining op" attached to solar system.

I would say no to all of this, as you would be: -Able to gather intell without actually going there - remove the need for covert ops
It basically creates the chance for you to custom fit your fleet to wtfpwn the structures in that system. Good ol' fashioned scouting is the way to stick with that i'm afraid
A better option would be that it displays similar representations of the current "cyno finder" and instead shows you which systems are cyno jammed, just nos specifically which pos it's on --------------------------------

A general improvement to the map overall:
3 levels of customizable information display, marked by...
- Star Color
- System 'Cloud'
- Jump Lines
Where any of the current "Color Stars By" options could be set to one of those levels. I envision something like the current UI, but with three extra columns containing radio buttons to set a filter to each level.
And for the idea of Real Time fleet feedback on the new Tactical Map, look no further than the game Allegiance. Let people assigned as 'Scouts' in a fleet (or do whatever for the game mechanic, doesn't matter) periodically update the Tactical Map with enemy positions on their grid. This means of course that the "Seamless" map needs to be truly seamless and zoom down to the grid level to be useful.

The current map implementation is so bad from the UI point of view, you should really think of a total redesign before agreeing on any new features.
There's need for a tactical map. Light, fast and easy to use mid-warp, showing current constellation and jump routes to neighboring constellations / regions, autopilot route and nothing else. Possibly flat, with a clear indication of the system you're in, system selected, numer of stations and security status, gang members by default. All this information needs to be presented in text, and not in fancy colored blobs.
My main point here: a tactical map is not for planning wars, it's for avoiding gatecamps and coordinating gangs.
What you seem to propose for Ambulation, a strategical map, with full 3D view, zooming, sovereignty, veldspar concentration, exotic dancers on the local market and whatnot. Easy annotation, tagging, coloring, all the good stuff that's been proposed here could be used to actually plan campaigns.
Map UI.
The whole EVE UI is designed around context menus. This is wrong on so many levels I'm not even gonna say -- and the map is the paragon example. Whenever you left-click somewhere, the map zooms around on itself, changes orientation etc., so basically every time I try to select something, I have to zoom out and turn around to figure out what I have selected and where is my ship. This is compounded by the fact that the current position indicator is almost impossible to see on most zoom levels. Additionally, the map presents no functional information and even the infoboxes that pop up on cursor hover are useless, because of the clutter and small font. Whenever I try to select something on that pop-up, I invariably mis-click on another system, the map zooms around and I have to start again...
My suggestions:
Left-clicking should select, double-click should zoom and it should be possible to drag waypoints around. Make that left mouse button useful.
Replace that useless constellation browser window with a selection status / info window. Upon selecting a system, it would display stations, agents, services, roid fields, distance from current location and other text info grouped by function and not by planet.
Make current / selected constellation stand-out. In general: less colored dots, more info. I know that 5000+ dots on a screen are pretty and all, but at the same time they're totally useless for anything other than printing posters. So make a separate poster mode and let everyone else actually use the map. --

Great idea, cant wait till ambulation.
I think this mappy thing should have the ability to have more than one filter at a time, for example multiple sovereignties, or 'my gang members in space' and 'number of ships destroyed' that kinda thing.
